Hmm, my Heroes recording blanked out with the message half way through...ugh!

Is anyone else seeing particularly bad reception on CBS4 the past couple of days? I'm getting Green and Yellow squares and rectangles making veiwing impossible.

I am too, for a few weeks now. I havent seen it from OTA direct to my XBR950 but OTA going through the H20 DirecTV box and the MPEG4 local.

D* MPEG4 NBC broadcasts weren't too bad last night, at least better than last week. I noticed 1 or 2 pixelations but no blocking or screen messages telling me not to call.

One thing to remember is NBC's football broadcasts have been horrible even OTA. I have a straight signal going OTA to my TV and even there the Sunday Night Football picture quality has been anything BUT impressive...in fact it's downright awful at times.

It looked like the game was taped or filmed like a movie. Really Awful!!!

Any word on Boston's WLVI/CW56 HD coming to D*? Are they even broadcasting HD OTA yet? I just moved up to HD, so I don't even know if UPN or WB were in HD last season. I've heard there was some station ownership drama going on and maybe that was holding it up, or is it just D* dragging their feet? D*'s site lists the CW as an available HD local, so I was really disappointed to be stuck watching Veronica Mars and Smallville in SD.

Of note, WLVI is being purchased by the NBC 7 owner, so that doesn't give me a great feeling about their HD quality.

WLVI has been broadcasting OTA HD for some time now, definitely all of last season, and I think even longer. Since the switch to CW I've noticed an annoying problem with the OTA signal- when there is a transition from commercials back to the HD program, there are a few seconds of jerky motion and pixelation. I get the impression the transition from one MPEG-2 stream to another isn't being done well. That happens with my Samsung tuner.

Guys,

Have any of you seen any improvement with your 1080i channels? Mine still look terrible, time for all of us to call back in to D* and ask them whats going on....

NESN Bruins looks good too. NBC - still stuttering.

Patriots vs. Texans isn't in HD on CBS4. Is that the national broadcast or is it an oversight on the part of D*?

CBS did not televise the game in HD, by design. The Pats pathetic play of late, coupled with an inferior opponent was probably the reason.

Anybody know how far north of Boston the Boston spot beam goes? I'm going to hook my reciever up in my "camp" in central Maine, and wonder if I'll be able to get my Boston locals.

DirecTV doesn't supply any locals in that area of Maine.

I'm not sure but try using Salisbury Mass Zip (01952) in the setup.

That won't do anything, will it? As far as I know, "what channels you get" is controlled by Directv when they send a signal to your reciever. They decide what local channels you get by the address/zip code you give them for billing.

If I give them my camp address in Maine, I will get NO local stations. If I give them my Boston home address, I will get almost a dozen local stations, and the 4 big networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) in HD. Maine is a small market, and gets screwed, Boston doesn't.

I'm pretty sure that's the way it works.

Anyway, I'll let you know next time I head up there and try it out.

Anyone not getting their Center Ice games tonight? (Friday January 26, 2007 9:08PM E.S.T)? In the Lowell Area?

I'm getting just a blank black screen . No 721 or warning about a black out.

Just curious if it's only me.

Thanks for any responses.

Getting my HR20/AU9 (hopefully not AT-9) hooked up this Thursday. Saw some posts on dbstalk about Boston local issues, so thought I'd look here. Seems like you're still seeing issues? Is it everyone? I didn't see too much about complaints you've made to D*...has anyone had any luck with that? If I run into issues on Thursday, I guess I'll give them a call, but if we're all having problems and barrage them with e-mail or calls, I might light a fire under their *&%^$

I've had Dish Network for about 2 months and have had no issues at all with the locals. I can receive all the Boston locals with an indoor antenna and the quality I get from Dish's version is equal to OTA. I am referring to digital channels.

I've had the DirecTV H20/AT9 combo since September. I also have a good antenna and only need the sat for ch25 and NESD-HD locals. The PQ on the sat local HD channels has been disappointing, especially for football and baseball. I was going to say that the PQ had improved lately, however I tuned in the superbowl on DirecTV channel 4 and the PQ was absolutely abysmal - the field was flashing like crazy as well as being very blotchy - the worst I have seen! I quickly switched back to OTA.

The 720p stations (5 and 25) seem to be about the same PQ as OTA. The PQ problems are mostly with the 1080i stations (4, 7, and NESN-HD). The PQ seems to vary a lot depending on the type of program you are watching. Sports seem to be biggest problem, however if you have a static image, such as a talk show, then you might not be able to discern a difference.

I was going to call DirecTV and find out what was going on for the superbowl, but their customer service reps always play dumb and pretend they don't know there is a problem.

Benji, does Dish have NESN-HD yet? Baseball is coming back - can't wait..

The probelms I'm seeing started about 2 weeks ago on the MPEG4 locals CBS4 has been awful, especially with sports. Red dots are showing up on ABC and FOX so it's not a 1080i problem like they were having earlier. Yes, I called D* on Saturday...they claimed the haven't heard about the problems and I didn't have the time to escalate. Will call again when I have a couple of hours to wade though the levels of support. We all should.

Agreed...if all goes well with my install today, I'll contact them. Phone calls can take some time on people's parts, so don't forget about e-mail...takes less time on your behalf and easier for them to track issues.

I've been getting the red dots too - on CBS and NESN-HD as well. Time to call!

Having said the PQ was dreadful on Sunday, I was switching back and forth between D* and OTA during Letterman last night and could not discern any difference in PQ. Makes you wonder..

Good point, just fired off an e-mail

The response....sounds a bit auto-reply-ish to me...

Thanks for letting us know your concerns about the technical problems you're experiencing in some of your HD local channels. DIRECTV is now aware of the problem and we're working to resolve it quickly.

We appreciate your patience and once again, we're very sorry for this inconvenience.

I had a Directv HR20-750 installed this past week and I'm not receiving sound on the MPEG4 locals when Dolby Digital is selected in the audio options. I'm using an optical cable to my Integra DTR-9.1 receiver and Dolby Digital comes in fine on the other HD channels (72 to 79) and I receive sound on all the other MPEG SD channels. DirecTv told me they aren't broadcasting Dolby Digital on the MPEG4 locals yet in Boston. Can anyone else confirm that this is true? Anyone using an optical cable and still receiving sound on 4,5,7,25, and 623 when Dolby Digital is turned on?

I have the H20-100, not the HR20, and use the Dolby Digital out feeding my Sony preamp. It works fine on all the channels, including the MPEG4 locals - was watching the Sox last night on 623 HD and the preamp said it was decoding a Dolby Digital 5.1 signal.
