Neweggs very good about that stuff, I have had great service from them.

I agree though, EVERYONE has had broken grill on their monitor 60s and 70s for some reason...

If its just the grills, I called polk and they were more than happy to send me some. If somethings wrong with the speaker, def newegg should replace!

I consider myself pretty lucky in that all the monitors I have bought from them had no broken grills...buy yes it seems that is a common issue with the way these speakers are packaged. the monkeys at fedex or ups or what-have-you probably dont help much either.

We haven't got that far. If I have to ship it back it's not a big deal as I will at work. However they are filing a claim with UPS (not UPS's fault) so UPS will probably pick it up and do something with it. The Styrofoam padding. There were 4 strips about a foot to foot and a half long. That is all the packing that they used. Like I said it was clearly Newegg's fault, not UPS's.

The Grill is actually fine. One foot is broken and there are several dents / chips along the box.

Has anyone had any experience buying Polks from their ebay store? I've seen the speakers I'm thinking about, but they're all refurbed, but come directly from Polk with a 2 year limited warrenty.

Hi all, audio newbie here looking for some advice and opinions. I am looking at putting together a new system for my home theater. The system will be used pretty much exclusively for movies, gaming, and television. My room is 22' x 13' with a vaulted ceiling of 9' at the highest point. After a couple days of research here is the configuration I am considering:

L/R - RTiA3
Center - CSiA6
Surround - RTiA1 OR RTiA3
Sub - To be determined. Willing to spend in the $500 to $600 range.

I am leaning toward the RTiA3's as my L/R as opposed to any of the floorstanding RTi series mainly due to cost. I would also prefer to not have to supply power in the amounts the floorstanders would require. I am also hoping that a good sub will help with the loss in bass I will have by going with bookshelf speakers up front.

Any thoughts? Would the A3's be better than the A1's as my surrounds in this configuration? Any recommendations on a good receiver?

As far as recommending different speakers, it would be "nice" to spend $1200 or less for L/R/Center and surrounds...but I could be persuaded to spend a little more for a compelling reason .

I have and did not have any problem. The speaker looked new and worked perfectly. I would not have a problem buying from their ebay store again.

That depends. Which speaker are you looking at and what are you powering it with? I like to listen to music without a sub but I know others who prefer a sub. The LSi line has a good frequency response down low but it depends on how much bass you want and how much clean power you can feed the speakers.

You may want to take a look at Polk's eBay store. I was able to grab a pair of refurbished RTi A5's for about the new cost of a pair of RTi A3's. The CSi A6 is built to keep up with the tower speakers and given your high ceilings will probably benefit from the additional sound from the RTi A5's.

To address your concern of power requirements, the A5's are easy to drive and don't require any more power than the CSi A6 to drive.

If you order all of your speakers from the ebay store you will leave tons of space in your budget towards other areas you would like to invest.

The only caveat is that not all of these speakers are always available on the eBay store so you may have to be patient to get all the speakers together.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't see any of the RTiA5's on the eBay site at the moment, but I will definitely keep an eye out. Were I to go the A5 route I'd probably opt for the A1's as surrounds.

In my limited research on receivers it looks like the Onkyo 609 and 709 have a pretty good following on this site. Anyone have any thoughts on how either of these receivers would work out with this setup?

How do I stop playing the upscale game? First I thought I'd go with Monitor 60s, CS1, and Monitor 30s...then I figure for a little extra with the Newegg deal, I could bump up to Monitor 70s, CS2 and Monitor 40s....then I figure for a little extra, I could bump up at least to the RTi8s.....will this madness ever end?

I told my wife, at the rate I'm going, I'll never upgrade because I keep increasing my wants which currently out weigh my budget!

Do like my wife suggested. She said, upgrading all the time is stupid, pick out the set up you want, and then go for it. When she said that to me, I almost passed out, and then I quickly said, good idea honey, thank you.

Ordered another Monitor 70 today.. This should complete my system.. for now.

The weak link for now is going to be my receiver, Onkyo TX-NR509. In a few months I'll probably upgrade to the 709 and pick up some Monitor 40's for side speakers. Although I still have a feeling I'll be very happy with the system as it is.

CS2, 70's and 30's.

I'm thinking I'm probably going to be better off just getting the Monitor 70s, 40s, and CS2 since I will still need to get a new sub and avr. Hoping this setup will work with my existing Kenwood 600w receiver and hold me over for years to come.

I was playing around with my CS2 and one (yes one ) 70 last night and I was able to turn the sub down quite a bit. I was very impressed with the midbass output, even with my onkyo 509 which only has 80w per channel.

Would the Tsi series sound more like the Monitors or the RTi or is it an apples to oranges sort of thing? I ask because the only place around me to listen to any speakers prior to buying is Best Buy and they only have the Tsi series.

BTW, I hate all you guys for giving me upgraditis. Now I want to go with the RTi series but it'll take me a few more months to save up for those over the Monitor series but I think that would be the better investment in the end.

The Tsi's are close to the Monitors, generally with the same woofers and a slightly different tweeter and crossover. They are a slight step up. The RTi's are a big step up. I have replaced my Tsi's in the family room with RTi's and the change is notable. But now just today I upgraded the CS20 in our main system in the living room with a CSi5 (RTi family) and that was a BIG step up and has me seriously considering moving the M70's to surround duty and replacing them with RTiA9's.

Do it or if you can swing it order the LSi's from the Polk ebay site. They are a ridiculous step up as well .

Thats what I did, upgrade from Monitor 60's to LSi 15's

You could just go with the 7's and LSiC (provided you have a decent sub which I think you do).

Yeah, I considered that. Problem is the LSi's are 4 ohm and are probably a LOT more power hungry than the RTi's or Tsi's. I do have a 2-channel Crown amp but would rather stick with a modest AVR for all channels rather than go down the "racks of amps" road again.
