$99 is a decent price for the M30's so don't hesitate expecting the price to drop much. Most would be $80 but that is rare. Also you can pick up M40's for $120/pair maybe on Polk's eBay site (that's where I got them). Your Denon can matrix two rear channels from 5.1 material, so you can hear 7.1 all the time, not just movies that are made that way. I would recommend M40 as L/R surrounds and M30 rears. The M30's have wall mounts already built in. But much depends on the size and shape of your room. If your room is wide, you may want to go with 5.1+wides, or 7.1 if your room is deep (as is mine).

The M60's are great speakers. I ran them for several years and was very pleased with them. Also I hear the 505 is a decent sub. I'd say you have an excellent starter system there.

Cheers! I ordered the M30s, will hold out just a bit to see if the M40s fall into the rotation so I can pick up a set of those and get the 7.1 set up going. Thanks for your help!

PS - Could you elaborate a bit on what 5.1 wide is and how it compares to 7.1. My room is definitely more deep than wide.

So I have had the monitor 60's for about a week and they are really opening up. I do however need to upgrade the receiver and depending on the sound of the new receiver possible run the towers on an amp. But very clean until I hit the higher output levels of the receiver I own.
Both 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound use side speakers called surrounds, but 7.1 includes one or two rear speakers. Some movies are encoded with discrete rear channels (the last two tracks or 6 and 7). Newer AVR's such as your Denon can also synthesize rear channels from 5.1 material, and/or simulate "wide" or "high" surround material for speakers either placed to the right and laft of the front speakers or above them. As I said before, a lot depends on the size and shape of your room. Personally I prefer rears, but some would rather have high or wide. I suppose it is possible to have all of the above in the form of 9.1 or 11.1 (does it ever end?)

Thanks. I think I'm just going to get a pair of the 40s to round everything out, which leaves me with this set up:

1x Denon AVR2112ci - Receiver
2x Monitor 60s for fronts.
1x CS1 for center channel
1x PSW505 Sub
2x Monitor 40s for surrounds
2x Monitor 30s for rears

Now I just need to find some decent looking but inexpensive stands for the 30s and 40s and I should be in good shape, whew!

The weakest link in your setup is the CS1. Get a CS2 and you will be much happier.
It goes on sale for $99 and is a keeper. Also don't forget the M30's have built-in wall mounts.

Ordered an Onkyo 3009 and a pair od RTi A7s. Can't wait to give these things a go when they come in. I've been bitten by the upgrade bug smh. I've had my Onkyo 609 and Monitor 60 for only like 8 weeks.

Very nicely done!!!! I was just looking at the 3009 today, very nice piece of equipment; XT32, can do wides and heights at the same time, 140wpc (2 driven), I've been considering that one myself.

One question if I may, why A7's and not A9's?

hi Xerxes,

Late to the party...
I'd skip the 505 sub for now... you'll be upgrading it first... Get the 70's for your fronts, move the 60's to the sides, and keep the 30' s for the rears , along with a CS2, and save up for a real sub... not a Polk. Look at the internet direct sub companies first... namely HSU, Rythmik, SVS, Epic, and Chase... in that order... IMO, YMMV.

For movies.. you'll need a sub. For music, and 'most' gaming, these will do fine... for now. The Monitor 70's have a -3 db of 40hz... that's good. The lowest note on a bass guiter is... what... 41 hz. So 'most' music (except church pipe organ, dub, and synth... and some rap) ... vs. the 60's with a -3db... of 48 hz.... without a sub, you'll be missing alot.

For any semblance of realistic playback FOR MOVIES, you'll want a sub that can dig into the low 20hz range.. 16 hz is better. The lowest note on a church pipe organ is 16 hz , and anything lower is computer generated 'put there' material... not really reproducing a 'live recording' at all, but there is content even lower than that is some movies.

again... IMO, YMMV

Joseph

M70's and CS2 are on sale right now using an email promo code from NewEgg!
Hopefully you are on their mailing list.

Congrats! You will love the A7's. I have the Rti10's which is the older style cabinet with the same drivers.
Moving up from M60's you will definitely be impressed.

I would have deffinetly got the A9, but i have some space constraints and the A9 would not work for me. They are a lot bigger than the A7 when i look at comparison pictures. My next step is to upgrade my center channel again to A6. Just finding a way to mount such a large speaker above my TV. May have to do some DIY.

This bite is itching bad ;-)

I already have the 505 sub frown.gif We're moving to our new place in a couple weeks so I might try to give it a shot but your advice and insight is very much appreciated. I will try it out with a bunch of movies and music and try to determine if it falls short. I am already WAY over my anticipated budget for the time being though.. Remodeling the new house in general ended up costing twice what we projected!

Just saw the CS2 for $109, I think it might jump on it, not sure how I can send the CS1 back though, I will check with the Egg. Thanks!

PS - you guys have all been amazing, I appreciate it so much smile.gif

Rule of thumb I always used for projects: take your worst case estimate, double it then hope you break even.
BTW many folks here are happy with their 505 so don't throw in the towel just yet. Also the CS1 is in fact the best timbre match for the M60's but as far as output levels is more appropriate for 40's or 50's. Still there are those who like the CS1 because of its small footprint and easy placement, especially for those coming from a HTIB setup. If you can do it order the CS2 and see which you prefer. I have two CS1's in boxes in the garage and even used them as rear surrounds for a while.

I'm definitely not prepared to give up on the 505 yet, especially since everything is still sealed in the box and I haven't even been able to open it and try it yet. I will compare the CS1 and CS2 soon after we move though.

Thanks again all!

I had a 505 for a couple of weeks and it was a big improvement compared with my HTIB subwoofer. Knowing your budget is tight now, just enjoy it until you are able to make a move (upgrade).

I am a big fan of since you already have it. I didn't pay attention to that part of the post. Give it a go and allocate the money elsewhere. Personally I got the cs1 because it matched the drivers Of the 60's. Had I bought the 70's I'd have got the cs2. Many people here like the cs2 over the cs1. I might give it a try but when I upgrade again I'm probably going rti series components.

After buying the 60's and giving them time to start breaking in, I love them. I do see a need to upgrade series in the future but am thrilled with the sound I have ATM.

Man, I can't really do that.

See, in my quest on finding the right gear for my HT (deals), I have been taking several days during the weekend to grab stuff at different places such as SC, NC, and FL. So, for me EmoFest is a family trip.....wink.gif

A bit of a trying week. My company went through the 17th (no exaggeration) round of layoff is the last 4 years and more importantly I found the RTI A9 series on sale for a great price. In a fit of excitement I failed to order two and ended up with one. The sale price ended and company would not extend for a match. I called Polk directly and was able to order an additional A9 plus an RTI A6. SWEET! Polk had only one A9 and gave me a great price. The first A9 showed up looking as if they rolled it down the hill. I sent it back for a replacement and receive the replacement today. This A9 has one ding and the wood veneer has a dimple. Not certain how I might proceed. My second A9 and A6 are scheduled for delivery Thursday, from Polk. They ship Fed Ex, not UPS. We shall see... I still have two sets of 70's, 40's and a CS2. I will gladly keep but I am getting a little heat from the wife to sell. I have apparently reached a not before mentioned house speaker limit but will add a set of LSI9s in my soon to be 2 channel room in a week or so. I will report back with photos once setup is complete.198

So the A9 with the issue is the one that you ordered from the Egg. Right?

Did you contact them already? They might be able to offer you a discount for the trouble. I guess is way more expensive for them that you return it again. Anyway, just an idea.

Looking forward to see your new setup up and running!
Yes the egg. They offered a refund, but I requested an additional day to research. Polk had one refurb laying around and I picked it up for a great price. The second damaged (not nearly as bad) came from the egg as a replacement. The first was a mess!

I'll call the Egg again and take pics of the issue. Let them talk to you on options....hopefully the CS representative will drop you a discount on the one that you have at home.

Cheers!
