Since your sub and receiver have decent power...

I'd say upgrading the M60s to speakers with 6.5 inch drivers would impress you the most.

I was thinking of buying this amp Saturday if he still has it. Not sure how loud those fans are though. Monoprice has XLR to RCA cables really cheap so it wouldn't add to the cost much. Any one ever own one of these amps?

Know a bunch of folks that run these. The fans do make noise, only you can determine if its too much for you (bring an iPhone or something to use as a source and some cheap speakers, or see if you can audition it.

Personally I prefer Carvers NON PRO amps for my HT setup (M1.0t, AV-705x, etc), but its been recommended to get one of the PM models for a set of passive 18" subs I want to get eventually, and I know lots of folks that run em and dont notice the noise, but thats gonna depend on your ears, if the fan motors are not toast, etc.

Make sure to try and run it through its paces if you can though...

Thanks Enders. I never buy any used audio gear I can't audition. If he can't demo it I'll just pass on it.

Yeah, it's old but at my age it may still outlast me. LOL.
If possible, I'd open the case and check the capacitors for swelling/leaking. That would be the only component that would "age" more than others. A demo would be crucial, like you said.

I have not owned one of these, however I do run two pro amps in my HT. The only issue you may run into is the fact that this amp is designed for commercial level inputs (+4dbu or 1.228 volts), not consumer level (-10dbv which equates to .3162 volts). You may find the output of your consumer level AVR to be inadequate. My pro amps are designed for commercial in level as well. To solve this I added a consumer to pro converter. I purchased a Behringer DI-4000 (cheap~$100) that converts 4 channels. Two main channels, a sub, and a center. You can also purchase a two channel Art Clean box Pro ~$60.

A fan mod may run ~$10

Yeah, after doing more research I think I'll just take the easy plug and play route. Hopefully I'll run across something locally on audiogon or craigslist for a decent price. Trying to stay away from "new" prices if I can but I'll go there if I have to. Depends on how long it takes me to save in my toy budget.

Realized this might be a better place for my post.

My room is 11 x 18 (about 9~10 feet high). I need an "apartment friendly" sub. I was looking at the HSU STF models and some of the sealed models from SVS but do not know where to begin. I got myself in trouble by browsing too many threads and got caught up in the "ported vs sealed" debate so now I am concerned that ported subs may be too loud. I'd like to stay under $500 for the sub but it does not look like there are too many models that fit that category. I also need to get a receiver and wanted to stick with Yamaha or Marantz based on what I've been seeing about Onkyo's more recent track record. I'd like to stay under $600 for a receiver, which pretty much means none with preouts it looks like, but I may not need them based on my speakers. I don't know how important this is but I'm on the top floor of a 4 floor building, so I have occupied apartments on three sides of me.

My current setup is:
2 Monitor 65t
1 Monitor 25c
2 owm3 surrounds.

With any sub you get, a sub isolation pad may help reduce the amount of low frequency heading to your neighbor's apartments:

No, it won't. Low frequency wavelengths are from 10 to 60 feet long, and pass though ceilings, floors and walls with impunity unless they're very high mass structures. For that reason there's no such thing as an 'apartment friendly' sub. If the apartment walls, floors and ceiling aren't very high mass bass will pass though them, no matter what the source.

True, apartment friendly and sub are too words that don't go together.

I believe the Sub-dude does help isolate the sub from the floor. If the sub is cranked up or you are playing at reference level than the isolation pad would not be as noticeable.

I have a PSW505 that I keep turned down to a moderate level and my apartment neighbors have not complained. The subs you are looking at are in a class above mine, but they still have a level knob smile.gif

When I used to live in an apartment I was on the receiving end of a neighbor with a sub. It wasn't pleasant to say the least. If you really don't give a rats behind about your neighbors privacy I'd suggest you get a sub that does not go real low. Maybe a PSW505. Even that one may have your neighbors banging on your door depending on how much you decide to push it. There are advantages to apt. living but having a sub is not one of them.
Same here. No matter how low the volume, the low freqs will be heard (and felt) in the apartment next door. This is the one time I would recommend something like "Bose" with not very low bass... LOL Yep, I said it. That four letter word. I have one in a box in the garage and I said it... eek.gif

Thanks for the replies. I guess I should not be to worried about it because my neighbors are fairly loud themselves. I don't plan to listen to anything too loud so hopefully it will not be much of an issue. Do you guys have any good yamaha recommendations?

I hope that doesn't mean I am an annoying neighbor. I asked them a few times and they said everything was cool. They might be deaf though as I can hear them talking at a normal volume through the walls. Or I could have sensitive ears.

I am running a PSW505 turned down.

The neighbor I had could not care less about his neighbors. Thankfully most people are not like him. You care and he did not. The apt. manager was a gutless little weasel and wouldn't do anything about it. Of course he lived at the opposite end of the building and didn't get the boom. Oh well, all history now.
I now live in the basement of a house below my son. We both have subs and know when and how much we can crank it. Always good to work with your neighbors.

Now who would win in a bass face off between you and your son smile.gif

And does that Bass off include opposing Musical Genres? Or do you listen to the same type of music?
Now that my son has matured thankfully his ears have matured also. We both like mostly the same type of music. Thanks goodness his rap listening days are gone. All his gear is hand me down from me except I made him cough up $200 for the Monitor 70's which helped me spring for the Rythmik. He has my old Cerwin Vega sub which does pretty good for his small living room. He vibrates the upper level and I vibrate the whole house. biggrin.gif

It does. It's moot. Sound does not go through the sub's feet through the floor.

I said may and reduce, lol. I never speak in definite terms so I can always find a way to squirrel out of it later. tongue.gif

Seriously, though, thank you for the correcting my misperception.

Bill tried to set me straight on something once but after wearing out two keyboards he had to give up.
I built a Bill designed sub and experienced a great deal of room interaction. Buzzing and vibrating. I then played with a riser/isolation pad and it seemed to help. His contention that the riser did nothing feel on deaf ears. After further investigation I reached the conclusion that he was indeed correct and tore my room apart to reconstruct with a more structural stability. He knows his stuff. wink.gif
