Can anyone recommend a LED TV model with good picture quality? Budget $1000 to $1800. Thanks. The kids want 3D. But I don't think they will miss it lol.

I've got a 40" and 60" Samsung and am real happy with them. Some of the lower models have the same panel as the more expensive smart TV's with the widgets. Sharp makes a lot of the screens for Samsung so some models can be close in PQ. The more you spend the better you'll get of course. You pay extra for the smart TV's but don't always get better PQ. TV's should be dropping in price the closer it gets to Super Bowl time.

The tv I was using before in the living room was a Samsung plasma. So, now I'm looking at this UN60F7100AFXZA. A little over my budget.

The Anthem option is MUCH more expensive as there are a BUNCH of used Pio's out there that will work, Anthem just came out with their Gen 2 models.

I debated looking at one of their Gen 1 models like the 500 as its got enough HDMI ports for me now (since a Xbox One is in my future), but IIRC the new Gen 2's have a better version of ARC...

So its a hard call, for now until we get into a house its not going to matter.

Heck by the time I can actually do it they might be on Gen 3 models lol....

That is a very hard call. For me the price of the open box MRX300 I got was too hard to pass. For the difference I am tempted to replace my PSW404 with a better sub. I do wonder how much better the newer version of the ARC is though.
Like you said Gen 3 will be here before you know it.

i'm thinking about getting myself an after christmas present and was curious if anyone here knows about headphones?

i have an inexpensive set of Sennheiser HD428's and have been thinking of moving up in quality. i like the 428's well enough, but i think its time to move on. other sennheiser models as well as denon and audio technica are intriguing to me. i am looking to spend no more then $200, $100 to $150 is better. i dont care about wireless or blutooth or any of that stuff, noise cancelling would be a plus but not required. so polk brothers shoot me some recommendations.

I convinced my buddy that I could only buy the L/R from him as the center was horizontal and my hole was vertical (i.e. patching drywall first). I also ordered a third unit from audiogurus.com (authorized Polk online dealer).

Yeah, the 300 isnt bad (I believe its 7.1 right?). My needs are either A: 7.1 + pre-outs or B: 7.1 + capable amp section + pre-outs lol....

If it was me and your looking for a set of good CLOSED headphones, look no futher than the Beyerdynamic DT-770's 32 ohm. Lots of good bass, great isolation, can we em for 7+ hours (I have) w/ no sweaty ear, and EASY to drive, so you dont "need" a headphone amp (didnt stop me from getting one though wink.gif)

It's probably just me, but if you need a headphone amp you're probably going to be deaf sooner than later. biggrin.gif

A little above your budget ($300), but I HIGHLY recommend Mad Dogs with Alpha Pads. They're based on Fostex orthodynamic cans, and they're a fantastic value. Dan at MrSpeakers (the manufacturer) is a great guy that provides fantastic customer service. PM me if you want to discuss more in detail, or just check on the dedicated thread on HeadFi. In my opinion, you can't get a better sounding pair of cans for anywhere close to this price.

Depends entirely on impedence and what you're driving them with. From an Ipod or computer or similar device without a built-in amp/DAC, you will need a headphone amp for higher impedence cans. I'm using a basic Schiit stack with my Mad Dogs and it's sonic heaven!

Yup, just like HT speakers, based on the impedance of the headphones, some REQUIRE one even to sound good at low volumes. For instance the DT-770 comes in 32, 60, 80, 120 and 600 ohm versions. The 600 ohm version really needs a headphone amp to attain decent volumes. Also an amp (again just like HT) helps open them up to sound more detailed EVEN AT LOW VOLUMES.

Plus in my case my headphone amp was also a DAC so I had it connected to my PC to stream my 24/192 hz to it, because the headphone jack is UNACCEPTABLE!!!

Ahhh, very good. Just be careful as those low volumes can turn to high volumes pretty quickly. Just trust someone who is paying the price in his later years. I'm just saying.

Totally understand. I do enjoy my music loud at work, however its intentional as I am trying to drown out those around me while I code as its one of VERY few ways I can concentrate on what I need to.

However since its at work, I can only get "so" loud before complaints come.

At home I simply crank my 2 channel and dont stress it smile.gif.

I have tinnitus in my left ear petty badly, and it sucks. I always wear double hearing projection at work but aircraft being what they are it isn't really enough and some people are more predisposed to issues. :-( take care of them little hairs in your ears lol

I put my system together entirely used from local Craigslist sellers at the beginning of 2013, when my old Sony AVR died and I decided it was time to get some real equipment. Replaced a Polk RM6750 HTiB with two RT600s at first, then found a great deal on a pair of RT800i plus a CS400 center channel which became my L/C/R and the 600s went to side-surround duty.

All of the used speakers sound great, the 800i and CS400 are pristine, purchased from the original owner, so they look great too. I'm not entirely happy with the 600s as surrounds, they're a little too low, but they sound just fine. Thinking about flipping them and looking for a pair of RT25i or RT35i on eBay or Craigslist that I can wall-mount to do better as surrounds.

At any rate, with my Yamaha Aventage 720 AVR, these used speakers are more than loud enough, and more than clean enough, for my smallish listening space, for music and movies. And they're a huge improvement over what I had before. Some folks on here will tell you that the pre-RTi models are actually more neutral-sounding than the RTi and RTiA models are. I can't speak to that as I haven't heard any of the newer ones, although I'd surely like to. Now that we put a bigger TV in the bedroom, I'm considering landing a pair of used RTi4 or RTi6 and a cheap AVR for sound down there. Although I may just get a cheap sound bar instead, to pacify the wife.

If I could come through your computer monitor and smack you I would right now eek.gif.

However if it weren't for "Beats" the current headphone market would look drastically different and if nothing else its getting lots of kids back into mid-fi stuff and caring about sound quality a very little bit.

Hopefully the influence of beat's can bring more into the fold and get the industry to stop dynamically compressing everything to heck..
