Westinghouse 42" LCD w/1080p. MSRP ONLY

On 2005-Dec-15 I contacted the Westinghouse sales department regarding the MSRP and availability of the Westinghouse 42" LCD Monitor model number LVM-42w2. More details are available at this Westinghouse product web site:

:( NOTE: I would have posted a web link but the "on-line message editor" stopped me because this is my first post. So you'll have to go to the "westinghousedigital" dot "com" site and hunt it down yourself. I found it in a page called "p-44-42-lcd-video-monitor.aspx"

It is expected to be availability "in Q1 2006". And will have the MSRP of "$2799.00".

I don't have any more details than that but, since I haven't seen anything else posted about this model on the forum I thought I'd mention it. I suspect this model will be a bigger version of LVM-37w1 which is heavily discussed on this forum. Like the LVM-37w1 the LVM-42w2 does 1080p and I suspect will accept 1080p on it's inputs. If you have any other questions about it you should contact

This looks like a promising panel. Chi-mei panel I'd imagine...

I just hope it's majorly improved over the 37inch.. Under 3,000 for a 42inch 1080p display is really good..

Well its about time! This should be a great panel and a great size. Only problem I can see is that it has DVI instead of HDMI.

I am not quite sure why they would do this especially since even their new 27" has one HDMI and one DVI.

There is very simple reason for using DVI. HDMI at the moment doesn't accept 1080p, at least designs available now. There was some talk about newer version of HDMI capable of 1080p but thats in the future. I hate HDMI anyway since getting sound to it from computer is a headache and it has absolutely no benefits whatsoever and sometimes doesn't work too well with computers, has major issues with black level with PC inputs (PC black starts at zero, TV starts with 16 so DVI is set to 0 and HDMI to 16) , same with pure white. For that reason Sceptre, which has HDMI input, needs to be switched in the menu for DVI signal. Keep in mind you can adjust DVI to properly display TV black level by adjusting picture, you can't adjust HDMI to computer black level unless the TV is specially designed to do so. I won't even go into why HDMI being newer standard, based on and compatible with DVI has problems supporting 1080p and needs newer spec version.

Exactly, I read somewhere on this board that HDMI 1.3 revision will include support for 1080p. When exactly 1.3 revision will become commonplace is anyone's guess.

The only reason that comes to mind is to keep the cost down.

Going with DVI and not HDMI has nothing to do with keeping cost down.

HDMI 1.3 will include 1080p support officially.

Really you buy a $3000 to $5000 lcd tv and then use the tv speakers for the HDMI input. or do you use a DVI input and optical to your receiver. I have not had a tv with the speakers on for years so HDMI is useless to me. I can not see a time in the future where it would have a use unless with a receiver with 4 HDMI switching capabilities.

First off I must agree that using built in speakers on a nice HDTV is kinda dumb. However, from the looks of it the speakers on the 42" are fixed. So to restate what I said earlier if they are going to make you keep the speakers on the TV they might as well give you the option of digital sound with HDMI. I personally have taken the speakers off of my LCD and only use an external sound source but I know numerous consumers would probably like the option to watch tv without using external sound.

I think a better mix would have been to do one DVI and one HDMI sorry to spark controversy.

Pretty slick looking TV.

I wonder if there's any truth to my theory: Westinghouse breaks into the business with low-cost, relatively well performing sets. After building a brand, they start making mainline, name brand quality stuff, and become a major player in the industry.

Could this TV be a step in that direction?

I don't know I have seen countless people screw up the aesthetics of their wall with speakers surrounding their HD panel. I say give them their built in speakers so that they at least have a chance of passing the test of good taste.

Or get some nice looking Mythos speakers to go with it...

I think there are plenty of people that would be satisfied by using the speakers on the panel. Remember, the Westies have been very budget minded, so for someone that just wants a cheap flat panel (maybe not even their main TV), getting a decent pair of speakers built-in is a great deal.

However, it would still be nice for those of us that don't want to use the built-in's to be able to remove them.

I ordered my LVM-42w2 through distribution today at a very attractive price. The Westinghouse rep for the Southeast region said that the TVs are in the harbor going through customs right now and that I should see it in about 2 weeks. I'll post a review as soon as I get it. I hate waiting!

Wow, I've been wondering when Westinghouse would come out with a 42". I picked up the 37" last week and am happy with it, but do feel the extra 5" is worth having. I don't know what the MSRP is of the 37" but the 42" MSRP is about $900 more than what the 37's go for at retail. Fortunately I'm well within my return period so I'll have to give this some serious consideration.

I tried to order one of these through Westinghouse Digital but without a business license etc, I didn't get very far. I did get the info that Best Buy will likely be getting the first allocation of them. Just a FYI.

Westinghouse indicates that the LVM-42w2 was listed in Techliving's HOT LIST 2005. Interesting that they can win acclaim for 2005 when it's not released until 2006. Anyone have a copy of that article? It's the November/December issue.

I just noticed from those specs that the response time is only 8ms for the 42" Westy compared to the previous 12ms for the 37" Westy. That's one more reason why this panel is on my short list of what 1080P to buy. Of course that list may lengthen in exactly 6 days (CES is now less than a week away!).

So, this Westinghouse 42-inch 1080P monitor is going to be running smack against Syntax Olevia"s upcoming 42-inch 1080P HDTV which will have Silicon Optix's HQV video processing chip plus ATSC/NTSC tuners as well as what appears to be the same 42-inch panel manufactured by Chi-Mei ? That will be an interesting alternative and a very strong competitor in the high-value/low-end segment of the LCD HDTV market, as i imagine that the m.s.r.p. of this Syntax Olevia model will be around $3.500, although severely discounted on-street....2006 promises to finally be the year offering multiple choices for "affordable" 1920x1080P LCD HDTVs, with recently introduced models by Mitsubishi and JVC, new upcoming models from Westinghouse and Syntax Olevia as well as the year-old units from Sceptre + Westinghouse.
I wonder where will all of these 1920x1080P panels be outsourced from; Will they mainly come from Chi-Mei and/or Samsung, as the recently introduced JVC model is rumoured to be getting its panels from, or will LG/Philips also offer similar resolution panels ?

Just received the costco coupon book today. It has a 42inch(1080p) Sceptre on sale(mar 6-mar 12th) $500 off but no price for the set. So it looks like three choices to choose from.

Hmmm, that does sound nice. The only question is will the Syntax Olevia accept a 1080P input from a PC on its DVI or HDMI port? For me and more than a few others a decision on whether to purchase hangs on the answer to that question.

Hmm...wonder why they would change this all of a sudden, unless the input chip they are using only supports 1080p on 2 inputs? So they shifted the 1080p that used to be on the DVI port (on the 37", for instance) to the HDMI port. That sucks, unless you can just buy a DVI to HDMI cable, and use it that way with a PC?
