At this point I have a fairly decent sound bar (L/C/R), plus a pair of surround speakers, and a subwoofer, driven by Denon 3311CI. I use it for general purposes - watching movie, TV, sports, and listening to all types of music. My living room is about 20 by 20, with vaulted ceiling. Honestly I am quite happy with what I have now, so if I were to add something it would be largely for enhancements. Questions:

1. Would adding a pair of floorstanding speakers be redundant to, or interfering with the sound bar?

2. All my other speakers are from a different brand (Pinnacle). Would mixing brands be OK?

3. If the answers to 1 & 2 are no, what definitely speakers would you recommend?

Any other thoughts would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

#1 Yes. You have to get rid of the sound bar if you add front L and R. Most sound bars (maybe all) suck anyway. Having said that, you need a center channel speaker, which is the most important channel, since almost all dialog goes there. But if don't want to buy one and there's a way to feed only the center channel to the sound bar, that might work, at least temporarily.

#2 Depends. Since your other brand is the subwoofer and the surrounds (right?) you should be okay. The biggest concern is the relationship between the center and the other fronts. They should as much the same as possible. However, even when using the same brand, since the centers tend to be smaller and mounted horizontally, even they sometimes don't match all that well, although for most movies, dialog is primarily sent to the center and soundtrack music and much of the effects are sent to the L/R and surrounds. What you want most from the center is clean, crisp and intelligible dialog.

I used a large toggle bolt for my BPVX's.

I was the very fortunate recipient of the 30% off, hence the addition of my second Trinity sub. (You gotta make the most of the discount, right? )

That's awesome.. It was a real b**** to get the feet on the 8060's last night.. The drill would only drill the screws in half way.. I had to do the rest by hand.. I have a nice blister to show for it.. All the guys whining about it were absolutely right.. I have music playing at my house right now in 2 channel stereo at about -37 on the Onkyo.. Gonna put the surrounds up tonight..

Do you find they blend well with the Bp line?

I had BPX's that I tried as heights and I just didn't like the sound at all. I had asked for recommendations at ask audyssey and here and ended up getting the highly recommended PM 1000's. The direct radiating 1000's are a much better fit for height speakers and blend perfectly with my BP's. I did consider going with the UIW 65 in wall but wasn't ready to make that commitment without trying the PM 1000s first. I may still eventually go with the in walls when I try to convince the wife I need the new Seaton HP SubM .

It's going to take a lot more then -37 to break them in, gotta get the drivers moving lol Try -20

I would just enjoy them at whatever level works. I have never worried about break in or should I say the "speed" of the break in period etc. It will happen one way or another. :-)

Enjoy!

That's what I did with my BP7000SC's. I start a little softer but I was disappointed at first so I cranked it an they literally blossomed in front of me. The drivers are way different on the newer speakers so I'm not sure if they would take more or less time else maybe they are already broken in.

Maybe a question for Joe, but does anyone know how much side wall one should have between a BP7000SC and the wall. I thought a couple feet would be good, it's not horrible, but now I'm thinking 4-6' would be much better. It seems like the distance from the side walls affect the sound more then the rear wall. I'm thinking the BP7002SC might have been a better fitment for my room, but it's way to late, have to make a new room now eventually in the basement lol I think my back wall is only 13' between both sides.

Thoughts?

Hello Logicators and Tru,
Yes - the term over-k#@$ should be deleted from our vocabularies. Every home needs a 9.1 system of DT towers and a Trinity on each channel (at minimum).
Truwarrior is right that the distance of the 7000 series towers usually makes even more of a difference in what you hear than the distance between the rear of the speaker and that wall. How much is ideal? It's tough to answer because A) the dimensions of the room matter, too. In other words, 2-3 feet from the side wall (the amount we usually advise as a minimum) in your huge basement may sound different than in my studio apartment. B) The sound of the bass is somewhat subjective, so what is a bit boomy or tubby to one listener may be perfectly balanced to another. C) in the 7000 series, the speakers are mirror-imaged, so reversing the left and right speaker may produce a sound that is better (or worse) to your ears. D) Your significant other may be understanding of your hobby, and where you want to put your speakers... or not... (see the comment about over-k#$@). I hope this helps, and play 'em LOUD!
BTW in a few weeks, we plan to do a webinar for you guys on what's new at Definitive Technology (new SM series, PC 400 system, new SC Series subwoofers, etc.) We'll plan to repeat it, perhaps 6 pm Eastern and again at 8 pm Eastern. Feel free to pm me with any suggestions of times; what you want to see us discuss; questions you have in advance, etc. Thanks for your support - best, Joe

The bipolar speakers bounce off the wall behind the speakers right? How far from the wall behind the speaker should the speaker be?

that would make a nice give-away for your next promotion

let's make it 11.8 with 11 bp7000s with 11 trinity's (one for each channel) plus 8 more trinity's dedicated to the LFE channel

My right 7001 was only about 2.5' from the side wall and I did not think it was an issue. I saw your post about an at screen. I don't remember, are you running a projector?

What did you guys use to mount your surrounds on the wall. A big screw?
I just used a drywall anchor + screw.

I used these to mount my SM-450s and BPVXs. My local home depot sells a 10 or 12 pack for a little over $5, and they hold up to 100 lbs. They are very easy to install and are pretty stable.

He's tight with his money. Give me a list of movies that will show these speakers off..

I bet Lord of the Rings would rock! I might have to buy the trilogy on blu ray
PS.. I'm so glad blu ray won the war.. How monotonous would it be to keep saying HD DVD?

OK, here is the situation. I have a new Onkyo 709 and new Boston Acoustics VS260s, 240s, 325C with a Def Tech SC1. The room is small, 11 x 11. That’s the usable space, but there is actually an entry way and a 48” x 30” closet right at the entry. So it’s not a square room. When I run Audyssey multi EQ, it sets all the speakers up at 40Hz including the 240 surrounds. It takes the sub all the way down to -15db. Even when I set it at 0db there just seems to be little authority from it.
My question is, what should I set the 3 knobs on the back of the sub to; the low pass, high pass and phase control? Also, is there a certain db level I should start the receiver at? I have the sub in the corner, and when I run a demo disc with frequency tones on it it’s silent at 20Hz, starts kicking in at 25Hz and is strong at 30Hz and up. In a room that small I would expect to get more out of that sub. Am I doing something wrong? I had a cheap 100W, 12” Yamaha sub that would hit lower frequencies before I moved the Def Tech in from my main system.
The yamaha is a 12.. Isn't the sc an 8"? its not going to get as low. After you run audyssey ,you might have to manually set your crossover points.. I'm not familiar with the Bostons.. Audyssey had my infinity 4 speaker center set at 120 hz.. I put it at 80.. 120 was way too high..

Do you play any video games? Check out some concert blu rays too. I have a small collection starting.
