Agreed. Me and my friends thoroughly enjoyed this movie opening weekend but after I got home and played some demos, it made me appreciate my current setup even more, there was literally no let down. Definitely looking forward to the BD release though.

Ghost protocol was such a great movie for home theater! I totally agree. Now if I could just convince the kids to let me take them to Avengers in IMAX! Wifey made us go to normal theater. I was of course the only one that noticed that there was a smudgeon the screen and the dialogue was a bit too hard to hear. And this was a newer theater.

I also saw The Avengers over the weekend, IMAX 3D. Kinda made me feel like going home and coming back with my subwoofer. It was loud as hell in the theater, but just sounded like there wasn't enough sub output...

Yup, I'll have a movie night when this comes out for sure. Hopefully 3d as well.

Hello Raines and Josh,
Trying to determine if this little bit of distortion comes from any other source, or any other movie on the same player, makes sense. You have a pretty good receiver now, so maybe being "underpowered" is not the issue. But check and see if you get this with other sources and software. In general, it is easier to damage a speaker by under-powering it and playing loudly than by having loads of power and playing loudly. But you can damage a speaker either way, so before you invest in new electronics, lets see if you can pinpoint the source. I hope this helps - best, Joe

The SM-65's seem like they would fit the bill, but they are out of my price range, plus the fact that they only have 5 & 1/4 inch drivers, which wouldn't match my BP-30's and c/l/r/-2000. The SM-55's do have 6 & 1/2 inch drivers, so I am guessing those would be a better match, I just do not know if I can afford them. I can definitely afford the SM-45's but I doubt they will match up. Here are my questions:

(Please note that my front trio consist of BP-30's and a C/L/R-2000)

1. For hights, and, rear surrounds, how do new SM-55's sound compare to the older Studio Monitor 450's?
2. What is the going rate for a pair of used Studio Monitor 450's?
3. What kind of discount do you think I could regotiate for a new pair of SM-55's?

Repost:

1. Would the Studio Monitor 450's be ok for use as surround backs and hight channels? Or should I go with the SM-45's, or possibly even SM-55's/SM-65's?
I have never used surround backs or hights, so I am not sure how much content goes into these channels?

2. How do the BPX's compare to the BPVX's for use of side surrounds? Are the BPVX's all THAT MUCH better?

3. How would you guys compare having a pair of BP-6b's for side surrounds, as opposed to having BPX's or (less likely) BPVX's? I can get a good deal on a pair of BP6b's but I am also going to keep my eyes open for a pair of BP-8b's and BP10b's.

I would suggest you try setting the speakers to Small and crossover to 80hz. Play the same scene you heard the distortion and see if you still hear it. Also, if you ran the MCACC calibration, check to see if the speaker trims look reasonable.

I am using SM 450s for height and I am perfectly happy with them. My fronts have 6.5" drivers (2000TLs and CLR-3000) so they match quite well.

Can't comment on BPX vs. BPVX, but I upgraded from BP2X to BPVX and there was a huge difference. BPX should be somewhere in between.

Unfortunately it is. I guess you can't really see in the picture but to the right of the TV is the hallway to the bathroom and bedroom. To the left of the TV is a wall and a closet. Because of the way the closet door opens, I can't even move the speakers apart to get decent stereo separation.

I don't really think that old DC apartments were designed with optimal speaker placement in mind.

New setup...what do you guys think?
Newegg has the Studiomonitor 350 for $240 right now (you have to register and enter a promo code to get that price).

I ordered a pair for the bedroom to spice up hanky panky time.

I think the sale ends today. Bp7006, Bp-8060st, Bp-8020st and one of the mythos superpowers were on sale as well as some other def tech stuff.

I picked up a pair of Bp7006's to use as side surrounds.

Hi all,

I need some urgent help. I am on my way to check out a pair of BP2002 and I was looking at the picture of the amp plate and look like the gold plates are missing. How big of an issue is this? He was asking $350.00 for them. [IMG][/IMG]
No issue at all. you could use makeshift jumpers or just contact Definitive, I'm sure they have them. I would put something in to test them though to make sure all the drivers are working.

Ya, probably even use small strips of speaker wire to connect them togeather and test.
Thank you guys. Simply put, I can just wrap around the posts with bare speaker wire and test it like that. I will just insert the banana plugs to one of the posts and see-hear all drivers working. Can I check too see the sub amp working just using the banana plugs or do I need to run the rca cable? I know so little about the powered towers I appreciate all your help guys. Also, $350 sounds fair?

Yes, maybe just banana plug into the "low" then create yout bridge with speaker wire strips, i.e. connect the low - to the mid - then from the mid - to the high -. Then the same for the +, i.e. low + to the mid + then from the mid + to the high +. Just don't wire directly from the + to -, that would bypass the speaker and create a short and possibly damage the amp.

I think the MSRP is $2000 so $350 should be good if you like them and the drivers all work. The sub should turn on automaticlly with speaker wires connect to the "low" input.

Thank you very much for the info. It was exactly what I was thinking. I will try and update once I get them and post some pictures

Nice work TruWarrior, thanks for posting such a detailed answer.
BTW, the BP 8080 ST got a pretty wonderful review from soundstage.com. I tried to post it here but somehow the link did not work. The review is by Roger Kanno. Check it out - best, Joe

Bought my first DT speaker recently...the SM350 (Cheap from New Egg last week).
I know, these are probably the bottom of the DT barrel...but a really nice speaker just the same.
Small footprint, but very nice speaker. Nice bass extention for a small bookshelf. Midrange clear and detailed and the highs are good. Won't get reference kind of loud, but pretty solid speaker for music. Will give them a HT trial this weekend...but watched a couple scenes of Avatar and they seem pretty good (AV reciever in my bedroom is not surround, so 2.0)

Welcome to the definitive family.......I myself haven't heard the 350's but from reviews they are a very capable speaker.Hope you enjoy them and if you have any questions just ask....everyone here is very helpful...

Hi Josh, yes, that's a great review, and it is fun for me to be involved with this site. Everybody is very helpful, even when a little controversy breaks out!

We often get asked about break-in of speakers. One of our engineers (Tim, acoustics) wrote up a white paper on the how and why. I hope you enjoy it. The link is below. Best, Joe :

Joe, I just received my Deftech BP8B towers from Newegg. Unfortunately on one of the towers two of those plastic tension fittings for the top cap came broken. Is there anything I can do to prevent me from having to send the whole thing back to Newegg. BTW I love the speakers.

Guys,
I wanted to thank g-bartman and truwarrior22 for their help on checking up the BP2002 towers. After I asked for help as to how to evaluate them. I went to check them up. They were practically new. Tried them out amps worked fine, all drivers sounded good. Best $350 spent ever. I tried turned off my sub(lfm-1ex). And cranked the sub gain on the towers to 3-4. All I can say is wow. Long story short I am very pleased with the end result. Finally, my room is complete.[IMG][/IMG]
That's great, glad it worked out for you. One hell of a pair of speakers for 350.
