I have def tech 2002 tl's and a clr 2300 which all have the built in subs. I got the best results by simply using 12 ga wire to each speaker and setting the processor for the mains and center to large. I have a separate svs sub hooked up to the sub pre out. The built ins do a good job but the svs definitely makes a noticeable difference in lf output.

Grayson73, If you run the LFE out to any of them use a splitter and send it to the front towers. Set the speakers with the subs to large as well.

Slash007, I have been auditioning alot new stuff from my local dealer (well ther receiver is new not so much the speakers) and personally I liked the CLR2002 more the then 2300. I have a dedicated sub and the towers so I don't need the subwoofer feature of the 2300. The 2300 compared to the 2002 sounded a bit hollow in the midrange The difference in the low end bass was noticable. I think I pay more attention on the quality of the midrange from a center then bass. The system I was auditioning on was a Denon AVR2807 (which I am looking to purchase at some point) and a pair of BP7006's and the dealer happened to have a pair of (now discontinued) PM200s hooked up as surrounds so the system was very close my own and so was the size of the room.

So I would say in your case the CLR2500, CLR2002, or CLR2000 would be the ones to choose from. The 3000 is amazing but if it doesn't you give much more over the 2000 (with your system) is it worth the extra $250??

EDIT1: I am sure the CLR2500 would give me the best of both the 2002 and 2300 but I cannot afford that much.

I've been told to not use the subwoofer inputs on the BP7004 and CLR2300 and just hook up the speaker wires with the receiver set to large for fronts and center. Is there any benefit to setting the speakers to 'small' and splitting the subwoofer output to the 3 sub inputs?

Not really but some receivers won't let you redirect the LFE to the speaker set to "Large" Yamaha is one of the few including Denon too. I'd set em to large and not run LFE cable to em, cause I have a dedicated LFE sub and if you end up going the same route you will need more splitters etc and it becomes a wiring nightmare..

My friend does not have a sub. Just to clarify, I should have him set all 3 speakers to 'large' and not connect a wire for the sub output?

Correct.

i found the best sound for mine was to just set the 2 towers to large and the center to small. the bass from the fronts is great. i also use a sub but i dont really need it all the time because of the bass coming from the towers is so good.

in response to the klipsch v.s. def tech question:

it is true that either you love horns or you dont. i thought klipsch was great when compared to other speakers at similar listening points. but the louder klipsch got the harder on my ears they were. also the longer i listened to them the more i got tired listening to them. with the def techs i experienced the complete opposite. they sounded great at low and high volumes. music i auditioned with the klipsch sounded much smoother and just overall better on the def techs.

I noticed that you have the 7004's. Did you audition the 7002's and then decide to get the 04's or where the 7002's never in the running? If so, why so?

Also, If I get the 7002's, would the denon 2807 be enough to power them, or would I need something more high powered like the 4306?
i ended going for what they had available and what they could get delivered the fastest to there store. i was getting a huge discount and i didn't know how much longer my girl would be working at that store. so i just didn't want to take a chance on waiting and not getting 1/2 off retail. they said they didn't know when they would have the 7002 models available so i just auditioned the 7004 model. i had a strong feeling that i wouldn't be able to resist the larger model once i heard. plus i was still recovering from them not being able to sell me the martin logan setup i had my heart set on. they wouldn't because i there not selling that model m.l. anymore.

don't get me wrong though i love these def. techs. they sound much better then the def tech. setup i auditioned and the m.l.s in my opinion.

as for the second part of your question about powering these speakers. my 7004s are being powered by a yamaha rx-v650 and they sound great with my 5.1 setup. i don't know how the specs compare to the denon 2807. do you already have the denon receiver or are you planning on getting it. if you don't i would recommend walking into a tweeter if there is one around you and compare them to yamaha revivers. after putting the receivers on an a/b switch i wasn't to impressed with the denon revivers. my brother who knows nothing about good audio equipment ( he still thought sony made the best speakers until that day) quickly said that the yamahas sounded alot better. i liked both reveivers but i also preferred the yamahas sound. so now im waiting for the new hd audio formats to come out before i upgrade my receiver.

Yeah after re-demoing Yamaha's new receivers I am also more impressed with them then Denon's, the delear uses a pair of BP7004, CLR2002, SuperCube II and BP2X (4). Apparently someone bought the open boxed PM200s and AVR2807. He didn't have the RX-V1600 hooked up yet the 2nd time i visited (just the 2600 and 659). So this was the chance for me to hear it put throught the paces to see if it was a huge gain over my 1300 (now three generations back). It was leaps ad bounds better IMO. The symetry and ranger were tighter. The dialog was easier to grasp and sucked me in more.

After a few minutes of LOTR: FOTR EE I was hooked planned on staying 15-20mins ended up closer to 45-60mins LOL.

I was also shocked that pricey Denon Dock $130 msrp and have heard thet DLO makes a new on for $150 that offers up better quality esp the ability to cotrol the iPOD.

So now my gameplan in the following order is

CLR2002
Yamaha RX-V1600
BFD 1124p
DLO iPOD Home Dock (possible B-Day gift)

I don't have the denon yet so that is still open. I do own the yamaha 2500 and like it alot, but I was really impressed with the features of the 2807. I guess I will take a hard look at the 2600. Thanks for the input.
For a 5.1 setup, should the BP1.2X be mounted on the sides of the listening area or behind the listening area? Conventionally it would be the sides.
with my setup i had to go with behind. the sides were just not possiable. the manual says use the sides with 6 or 7 speaker setups. with 1 or 2 in the back and 2 on the sides.

Neither the most affordable Def Tech surrounds nor the Cinema series satellites are available locally. Ultimate does, however, have their outdoor speakers. Does anyone know if these would be decent as surrounds with my BP10b mains?

Yes the outdoor speakers will be fine, they are a liitle different timbre wise but will still be great.

Another good matchup would be Mythos Gems

Thank you, but timbre-matching is my whole reason for sticking with Def Techs. I could get non-matching surrounds for a lot cheaper!

For exactly the same price as the Gems, I could get the BP2X's. I cannot afford either right now, but I could afford the BP1.2X's if I knew where to get them.

While the BP7000 SC's may retail at $5K/pair, I suspect that many were purchased for less than that during special authorized sales by dealers plus the shipping of these heavy beasts is included in the original retail sale.

IMHO, a price starting at retail minus 15-20% and then subtracting 10% a year of ownership would seem to be a reasonable used sale price providing that all original packing materials is provided. Beware that AFAIK, the warranties on Def Tech speakers are not transferrable, although Chet at Def Tech is ALWAYS helpful and goes the extra mile for their customers. Shipping costs for these beasts would be pretty hefty. YMMV

BTW--if serious about purchasing a pair of 7000's for what the selling price is on Audiogon, I would first check with any local dealers and find out if they have an authorized annual or semi-annual sale and you might get them for 20% off at that time and counting the shipping costs and warranty considerations, might come out ahead of the Audiogon sale prices.

g_bartman -- should you ever be near Raymore (just south of KC), you certainly may come over -- by Christmas I hope to have my toys moved into a dedicated HT room that is under construction in the basement (it is wired, plumbed and studded in and ready for sheet rock, but the wife keeps putting roadblocks in the way and finding more things for this retired teacher to do before finishing the HT room, so the system does not sound the best in its present setting with horrible acoustics)

i have the 1.2x surrounds. they sound great. i got mine from b.b. magnolia. here is a heads up. b.b. magnolia gets them for half of what there advertised for. they get almost all the speakers for almost half of what the advertised price is. if your in a crunch for cash but need the better setup then when you go in ask for a manager not a sales person. then you bargin with them on the price. believe it or not they usually will drop the price a little. my girls father got what amounted to be a free 4 year warranty on his 36inch tv a few years ago. he saved around $300 or so then bought the warranty after he got the good deal.

While this is excellent advice regarding especially displays, it may not be as successful with Def Tech speakers. Unless BB/Magnolia has a different contract with Def Tech than their regular dealers, Def Tech speakers are supposed to be sold at retail with few exceptions such as factory authorized sales which are uncommon. There probably is some wiggle room in regards to Def Tech speaker pricing, but without factory approval, I doubt that the wiggle room is very much.

I have heard of the 50% profit margin and also that it is typical of most speakers AND that what the dealer pays for most speakers is double the cost of manufacturing...EGADS...

I usually get a few hundred dollars off DT speaker purchases. I always wonder though just what the dealer does pay for the actual speaker? J.H.

Thanks. My local Ultimate does not stock the 1.2X's, and I am 100 miles from a Magnolia. For now, "virtual" surround sounds better than one might expect. My BP10b's image like crazy, especially in a small room!
