Do not take this as a flame, but you need to pour a glass of wine or bourbon and start at page one of the HLS 87/88 owner's thread and start reading. Opinions are like noses, we all have one. I did not like the Sony because of design and price. It costs too much and it did not fit my built in entertainment center. It is pretty well accepted that as far as bang for your buck, the DLP is the way to go. All of the technologies have faults, but you might not be susceptable to them. Can you see SSE, SDE, RBE.....etc. Personally, I can not see any RBE with the DLP. Fan is quiet. My set has no picture flaws that I know of. I am very pleased with it. And I would not get the 720P. There are a few advancements in the 87 series, with the color wheel and the 10 bit processing. And the cabinet is stunning in my opinion. And the cost is negligible. In 60 days the few hundred will be meaningless to you, IMHO.
A tv will not work miracles, you will need good source material and clean transfer methods to get the most out of the TV. And you will hear all kinds of things about calibration and settings. Do what looks good to you, its your TV. Personally, I enjoy DNIe on (Oh God, I am a Neanderthal!!) Whatever, as long as I get an orgasm watching the set, who cares, right?
Go get one at CC, hook it up and live with it for 29 days. If it sucks, take it back. Don't try to over analyze it, it ain't brain surgery, its a TV. Besides, by this time next year it will be outdated anyway.
In case you are interested, I had all Sony equipment and I ripped it all out, except I used the old receiver for my Patio/Living room speakers so I run two zones off it using the A/B speakers. My main HT is the HLS5687w, a HK AVR635, a Samsung 960DVD, a Samsung VR325 DVD-R/VCR combo unit, a Motorola DCT 6200 STB with Comcast, a MS xBox 360, and a Harmony 880 remote. I also have the TV wired for an OTA antenna and I have a Winguard SquareShooter on order. I run all the electronics through a PureAV PF40 power conditioner. I run a Sony CD jukebox, a Sony twin cassette tape and a Sony turntable into both the old Sony and the new HK 635. I also run the cable to the old Sony for the music channels. I use DefTech Pro Monitor 200 in front and 100 in the rear and a DefTech Center 200. My sub is a powered 12" Phase Technology Optima.http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/...2/8ff1a834.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/...2/e5e78d70.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/...2/bf934c1c.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/...2/d6345ce3.jpg
