Energy ESW-V8. It does a nice job of handling its frequencies without bringing the apartment police down on me.

He could also call Energy/Klipsch to get the tweeter replaced.

But it sounds like the upgrade to RC-30s is more to his liking.

If you want to hear what it sounds like, most any THX-certified DVD has a "calibration" menu that includes audio tests for polarity to make sure your speakers are in phase. It will play pink noise (like a test tone) and then shift the phase between the two speakers, and you can hear the tonality of the sound shift when the two speakers are out of phase.

You can also mis-wire one of your L/R speakers (swapping red and black) and then listen in stereo mode to hear the phase shift.

2 years ago when I ran YPAO with my Yamaha on my RC-LCR I got an out of phase warning. As my speaker connections are correct....I ignored the warning. Should I switch the black&red speaker wires on the back of the speaker and re-run YPAO? The rest of my speakers had no warning.
90% or more of the time its a false warning, and you shouldn't swap the wires if you verify you connected red to red and black to black. The battery test is one way to be sure, but don't leave the battery connected to the speakers for any length of time (just touch it briefly), and disconnect the speaker from the receiver first. And to play it safe, I would use a 1.5V battery. But if everything sounds good, I wouldn't bother testing.

Finally got the opportunity to move my RC-50's into the theater room last night and boy do they sound sweet.

Since it was an impulse purchase and I never auditioned them, I was concerned if I would be able to notice a sizable difference compared to the JBL E80's that they are replacing.

I found that there was a huge difference in the sound stage, dynamics and clarity. Awesome speakers, especially for the price.

Using a Denon2807 as preprocessor/surround amp and an Emotiva XPA-3 as frontstage amp.

Thanks to all of you for the insightful posts and keeping this a very informative thread.

I had issues with defective tweeters in RC-10's back in February. Vanns had no more Cherry speakers to offer me replacements. Since I like the Cherry I was more interested in repair (without shipping to/from and possible shipping damage), I pushed for getting new tweeters sent to me. It took two months of run around but I finally got my tweeters.

It seemed the hold-up was Klipsch Group sending out the tweeters to Vanns. I did talk to Klipsch directly, and while they were helpful with disassembly and debugging tips and such, they were insistent I go through the dealer to obtain parts. I have to hand it to Becka (Vanns customer service) for persevering on my behalf. Maybe Vanns is not so willing to go through this process at this late point in the selling out of the RC's and would rather offer refunds. I can't fault them for this, but it does beg the question of what happens after the 30 day return/refund period runs out? What good is a "5 year warranty" if there are no parts? Klipsch did tell me "they hold aside parts for warranty after the product is discontinued", for what that's worth.

BTW: Anyone trying to pry out tweeters on RC-10's is making a mistake that will damage the veneer around the tweeter area. You must take out the woofer first, and then PUSH out the tweeter from behind, careful to hold onto it when it pops out suddenly. (There is a tacky gasket that holds the tweeter in, almost like glue, even after the screws are removed.)

Manufacturers are required by law to keep an inventory of parts for discontinued items so that they can do warranty repairs. Nothing to worry about in that respect.

Just catching up on the thread, so this may have been answered.

The crinkle comes off, just plastic stuff to protect the surface.

Okay energy heads, and batpig, I am out to buy a Denon 1611 for my CBs.
Well it has been quite awhile since I posted in this forum. Just thought a few of you might get some "amusement" out of this. If I recall correctly Batpig used that term when I reported that my Blue Status Indicator light on my Energy 12.3 Sub had failed after just 20 hours of use. Imagine my surprise when after enjoying this beast of a Sub for over one and a half years, to look over and wonder what is that blue glow... Yes It started working all of a sudden. I was playing Christmas music... Hmm....
Its just a holiday teaser glow. Enjoy it while it last! It'll probably cut off again after New Years.
Alright! I will have to try that trick myself with my S12 . A little Christmas music for a some holiday glow!
Hi Everyone . I'm a newbie to Home Theater and just purchased a Denon 1911 and 3 Energy RC10s (From all of the positive reviews of batpig, afrogt, and every other great member here). I was planning on putting together a 3.1 system until I saved up for the side and rear speakers. Everything is currently in transit. I have a large 19'x22' room (10' ceilings) where everything will be installed.

My question is now that the RC50's are on sale at a sub $300 price tag, should I hold off on purchasing a subwoofer and buy a pair of the RC50's to take the place of the RC10's for the front? I have around $600 to spend currently. This would leave two RC10's for wide surround and one for the center channel with the 2 RC50's as front left and right.

My listening requirements will be 50/50 music and movies. Or, should I purchase the sub (probably a HSU STF-2) and look for RC-micros as surround? I've read over 200 pages in this energy thread, and am more confused than ever. Thanks in advance for all your help.

It didn't come up in the discussion with vanns, they went from exchange to refund. I would not want to deal with a warranty repair on a set of speakers i had just bought though. If I was more partial to a certain color or only could use the rc-10 i might have gone that route, but seeing is how they are all discounted so much i just got the next one up.

Thanks again batpig. Sounds like maybe one of the calibration dvd's would just be an overall good investment for my home theater, once I get it setup. Is there one that covers everything...tv and speakers?

Well I'm a newbie, too. But after researching avs this past year I jumped on the closeout rc's. I decided to go with the 2.0, 3.0, etc. progressively adding to my system, plan/theory. I started with 2 rc-10's, but then the woot deals came along and now I have a 5.0 or two systems a 3.0 and a 2.0. I'm guessing I will go 5.0 because I still need to buy a receiver, and maybe down the line add a 2nd room with surround sound. But then I have been looking on craigslist and seen someone was selling a subwoofer (VELODYNE CT-100) for $60 bucks obo (maybe I could offer him $30-$40 until I save up for a nice sub). So that's the plan I went after. I figure I can always add a subwoofer but may not be able to get the rc's at the current prices, which seem to be the least they have ever been. IDK, maybe that will help you.

By the way do you guys think this Velodyne ct-100 would be okay for $30-$45 with 5.0 rc70's, LCR, and rc-10's for the time being? http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/ele/2102828653.html
post #23087 of 47792
I'm sure for $30-45 it would be a great sub. I bet $50 is probably more what he's looking for, not $30. But it doesn't hurt to negotiate.

Good luck

At what point are you getting a receiver?

How do you guys like the RC50's vs. the RC10's for front staging? How do they compare for music vs. movies?
Would the RC-70's make good side speakers? Futureshops upcoming boxing sale deal on then is pretty good. My friend works at one of them and I will get first crack at them around 5 am before the general public at 6.

the rc-50's are louder, more clear, and provide more bass. i actually replaced 10's up front with 50's. the 50's would have stayed up front except a pair of 70's became available .
Alright, I believe I am done. Just finished setting up my Denon 1611 and moving things around quite a bit. I have 8 speakers in a 10x10x10 room. If anyone wants to check it out, I made a photobucket account to show it off even though it's not anything special, I am in love with Energy.

Bunch of speakers

I know many things are not ideal, as in speaker placement and such, but I have super room constraints as I live in an apartment and this is the best I can do. My center and L/R are not at ear level, neither are my surrounds, but it works. I am always either lying down on my bed or sitting up so it's close enough to ear level heh. I have two subwoofer cables around my room to switch between PC use and TV use.
just got my rc 50s hooked up to a 5.1 system also replaced the center channel with the rc mini cc running it with a onkyo 608. the rc 50s sound great when watching tv or a movie but i find the mini lacking in the sound department. i had a jbl s center which was a 3 way 5.5 woofers and sounded great but i didnt think it would match the rc 50s. i have a chance to buy a new energy cc 10 for 200 dollars it has bigger woofers do you think i should send back the mini and get that or just stick with my jbl center thank you

Bob

I am in a bit of a dilemma with a damaged tweeter too. I ordered a pair of RC-50s in the last week of December from WWStereo (@285 apiece). I received them on 12/02 and noticed that one of them had a bad tweeter. I contacted WWStereo and they promptly offered to send me a replacement tweeter and they would walk me through the replacement tweeter. A couple of weeks later, there was no news of the tweeter, so I contacted them again and asked them how long it would take to get the tweeter and if there were any other alternatives. The rep told me: "Still awaiting their back-ordered arrival at the manufacturer. There is no other alternative, but let me see if I can get an arrival update from the manufacturer for you and I'll let you know soon as I'm able."

So, here I am more than three weeks since I contacted WW Stereo about the faulty speaker... with no help. I do realize that it's not WWStereo's oversight that Energy shipped a speaker with a faulty tweeter. But they have clearly told me that there is no other alternative than to replace the tweeter. I am a bit disappointed with that. Having purchased from an authorized dealer, can I ask for them to replace the speaker? I even mailed the rep and asked him if I could return the speaker for a refund, but he didn't answer my question. He said I should be getting the tweeter soon.

Also, I tried to pry open the tweeter after removing the screws from the tweeter flange, but I was unsuccesful and ended up creating a little scratch in the veneer around the flange. The customer rep from WWStereo told me "There is a membrane which creates a seal. When the time comes, you'll simply pry it loose by inserting something thin like a blade between the tweerer flange and the cabinet."

I hope that is helpful to others trying to replace the tweeter on their RC speakers.

At what point are you getting a receiver?

Well I might check into that sub after some research and if he still has it after Christmas.

As for the receiver I decided to wait until after Christmas, for a few reasons: I'm just so busy, and I wanted to make sure I make a decision on the avr that I am happy with. I still haven't decided if I should go for a big dog like a Denon 4311ci or just something on the low end to tide me over until I can find something like that at a great price. I am having bad luck finding anything at closeout at Best Buy. Nothing on the low end to tide me over has really caught me as a fantastic deal, and I can't find anything on craigslist really either. I still don't know exactly how I want to lay out the home theater either though. Maybe I should take pictures of my room...it's pretty unconventional any which way.

But I had just decided to wait until after the year's end basically. If anyone sees some crazy deal where I can just order an avr online let me know.

I'm no scientist but it sounds like a 4311 is way over kill for your speakers.

Well that's the stuff I need to find out.

So that's overkill for rc-70's fronts, rc-10's rears and LCR center? I was thinking maybe down the road trying dsx or something. (That receiver seems like it has a lot of nice options, but I really am not familiar with how important they all are. Like the sub eq for example on that one.) I think I may start my own thread shortly. IDK

I need to research all avr's some more, but is that overkill for those speakers?

Holy Cow dude, that's a lot of speakers and systems for a 10 x 10 room! Now I don't feel bad about my addiction.

What? Wait a minute! So...explain. The computer and...how does it all work Triangles?
