Personally I'm running my RC-70s in a room smaller than yours and am just fine. I haven't had any major issues in my living room or now in my spare bedroom. Maybe I just secretly like boomy bass and can't admit it. Or maybe the speakers just party nice with my room (but less so in others). Whatever thee case, it shouldn't be too hard over come. Just IMHO.

Good to know. Thanks!

Yep, thanks to your PM I kept my eyes pealed for the RC-LCR to show up on vanns.com. when I went to purchase the RC-50s the RC-LCR was not in stock; I checked one last time before confirming my order and it was in stock!

The LCR is bigger in person but not overwhelming so; that is what I love about it.

Thanks again AfroGT, Ubergamer, and everyone else who helped me make an informed decision!

Was there an additional discount or was it the $450?

Nope it was $449.88 shipped. At least it arrived with the rest of my speakers.

All speakers were double boxed and was super protected which was great because one of the RC-50s packages had a hole that went through both boxes but did not touch the plastic protecting the speaker. I am positive that if it was shipped in a single box the speaker would have been damaged.

Quick question. I am putting together a half decent system upstairs. It will be a 2.1 with RC-70s and a 12 sealed sub (monitor audio). I would appreciate some input on an amp/receiver to power this system. Opinions on connections, etc, min RMS power, pre-out requirements are all welcome. I just want decent clean power to be able to open these speakers up when required!! I really like the sound of Yamaha (Straight Enhancer) receivers, so if possible I would like to go this route. Also considering Denon for flexibility and Audyssey. Cheers. Oh yeah, really looking at something used to keep cost down since new units are pricey and full of useless options.
RC-70's have a sensitivity of 92db so almost any decent receiver will do the trick. how big is the room? how much are you looking to spend?
if you are looking used, what is your closest craigslist city? and budget?

for a 2.1 setup you can get any decent stereo receiver... Harman Kardon's ebay store usually has several auctions for 3390/3490 units and you can get one for under $200.
It is a typical "split entry" style home, where the living room is on one full side of the house and goes from the front picture-window all the way back to the rear patio doors. Half the room is "open", the part where you come into the house and can either go up or down the steps (the split). hard to explain so I attached a thumb. Same idea as my place. The "foyer" has only a half wall dividing it and living room. Also, flat ceilings (not vaulted like in the plan). Speakers would be in the "living" area. Not looking for any "sweet spot" listening...just want good sound.

@BP: I have the Take FPS downstairs and really love the sound when in "Enhancer" mode on the receiver, which is a yamaha RX-V565. That said, I know the RC-70 should sound loads better than the FPS. Just looking for enough power to take advantage of these speakers. I was thinking $300-ish. Budget can flex but only looking to spend what is required and no more, ie, good bang for buck. Thanks for the tip on the HK ebay store. Will look there when I get home. Nearest city is Halifax for craigslist and kijiji.

Ok - hoping you guys can help me out. A few weeks back I was at BB in the Magnolia section to listen to a few sets of speakers I was interested in, believe it was some Paradigm & Mirage satellites at the time.

While I was there, after hearing these satellites the guy put on a smallish bookshelf speaker that he told me was the CB-5 and it sounded amazing ! Blew me away ! Went over and sure enough the speaker was by the sign that said CB-5, for a mere $180/pr

It looked like a small bookshelf, and it seemed a bit rounded toward the back as opposed to the block-like look of the more traditional bookshelf speaker. I could swear that it said Energy on the speaker, but I'm starting to think I am going crazy. Was similar in size/design to the Klipsch Quintet that they usually have set up for the surround system area in the "regular" (ie not Magnolia).

I've looked on the Energy Speakers website, and from what I can find it looks like there are the Take Classic, Minis, and then the CB's - none of these look like what I remember, but then again I was looking at so many different speakers a few weeks back I could have easily gotten something confused.

Anyway, after writing down "CB-5" on a piece of paper so I wouldn't forget I did a bit more research on what people thought of the CB-5s, was very happy with the info I found and advice I was given here and purchased 2 pair of CB-5s and a CC-5 center for about $325.

They arrived last week and I opened them up yesterday and they were not what I was expecting. Yep, I researched everything but didn't play close enough attention as I looked at the picture of the CB-5 before buying but I didn't see a side view showing me it wasn't the same speaker I heard at BB.

I will most likely still end up keeping them, but as I sit here wearing my dunce cap in the corner, my question is - is there some other Energy speaker that fits the description I gave above - or have I completely lost it ?

Thanks,

Chris

Greetings all,

Have been reading with great interest the posts here and attempting to educate myself having not purchased speakers for about 20 years. Summary to date:

Current system: 2.0 DBX V Soundfields (combine direct radiating and ambience drivers with 2" tweeter & 4" mid for ambience, 4" Ribbon tweeter & 8" mid & 15" woofer that goes down to ~ 26hz for direct radiating, sealed cabinets)

Potential upgrades: RC-30 or RC-50 or RC-70 for fronts, RC LCR for center, and no idea what to use for surrounds since the RC surrounds are no longer available. Powered sub in the 10" - 12" range for the low end. Would probably leave the port plugs in on the towers and center due to smaller room / cabinetry and use Sub to handle low end.

Room: 13' x 18' Family room with opening to kitchen at left rear (where left surround would typically be placed).

Usage: about 90% TV & HT, about 10% music.

Questions:

1) If using a sub for low end and ports plugged on fronts & center, is there much difference between RC-30, RC-50 or RC-70 (and where are you guys finding discounted RC-70s??) My thinking is that the RC-30s and RCLCR both use the same 5.5 woofer, so shouldn't that be a better match than the RC-50's or RC-70s?

2) What are good options for surrounds? No room for RC-30 surrounds in this small room, need to use satellites.

3) What are the pro's / cons of just going with 3 RCLCR's for the fronts and center? They're all matched and can be placed vertically or horizontally. Has anyone tried this type of configuration? Floor placement in this crowded room is an issue, but the left RCLCR could use the Sub as a speaker stand and the right RCLCR could be placed horizontally or vertically on or in a bookshelf.

4) What are good, reasonably inexpensive powered sub options? Not looking for window rattlers or loud volumes, accuracy, and filling out the low end at low to moderate volumes is desired.

5) What else do I need to consider?

This is a great forum, and I thank you in advance for your help!

A) Not sure, I only heard the RC-50s so far, I will post back when my RC-30s arrive. If it is the same drivers and you are using port plugs with a pretty high xover then there should be a little difference. My ideal system would have RC-10s all around with a good sub but the 10s are all sold out everywhere I looked.

2) What are good options for surrounds? No room for RC-30 surrounds in this small room, need to use satellites.

A) Depending on receivers xover you can get pretty much get any Energy speakers for surrounds. I am using energy take-5 classics as surrounds now for my RC-50s/LCR and there are doing a good job. I am sure when my RC-30s get here they will sound better but if the take 5s can hold up the CB5s, CB20s, or the CR10s should work great. (For TV, Movies, and Games.)

A) This could make for a fantastic system. My LCR sounds great as a center and I see no signs that it will not work in HT or Stereo mode. My only con is that it might be hard to find a stand to secure them.

4) What are good, reasonably inexpensive powered sub options? Not looking for window rattlers or loud volumes, accuracy, and filling out the low end at low to moderate volumes is desired.

A) The BIC F12 is a pretty impressive sub for the money. It is what I am currently using and it is on sell right now for about $184. http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F1...4775848&sr=8-1

To beat this sub you will need to spend more money. If you don't mind spending a little more you can look at the HSU VTF-2 MK3. http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-2-mk3.html

5) What else do I need to consider?

A) Pioneer 1120 or the Denon equivalent. The RC line is easy to drive so you don't need separates to run them. Hmm I am mighty tempted to hook up my mac amp to the RCs to see how much better they sound; I will probably do that after they are fully broking in.

Good luck!

I had them accidentally scheduled to my house, wanted them to be at work so it is not left alone on my front porch. But they would have been shipped to the house today. So the 30s are at ups facility waiting on pick up, and lcr at work! bahhhh

So why not go back to Best Buy and look again at what speaker impressed you so much? And this time instead of looking at the sign, actually look at the back of the speaker and read the label?

I'm definitely heading back there, hopefully tonite - and yes, I realize how stupid this was and am more than deserving of the ridicule that may come from my post Feel free to fire away because I can't believe what I did.

When I posted to this thread it was more of a long-shot, but was thinking that since I didn't see this speaker on Energy's site, maybe it was a previous model that's no longer displayed on the website but that someone here would have been familiar with.

Still getting my feet wet, and despite my idiocy I have really learned a ton from you guys, especially you afrogt (from both your responses to my posts as well as from your other posts I've seen when using the searching about other speakers and set-ups), so thanks.

Is it possible to change my screen-name to "The Guy Who Bought the Wrong Speakers" ?

Chris

Error aside, I suppose there's worse spots to be in than having the CB-5s and CC-5 for your first real 5.0 system !! Will be 5.1 after I get the Bic F12.
The CB-5 are pretty good, and for the price you did well.

The only speaker i can think of that is rounded towards the back at Best Buy would the pioneer BS21. But that's taller than the CB-5 and are usually out on the floor and not in the Magnolia area.

the only recent model Energy speaker with a curvy back is the TAKE series. Since you say it was small it could be the TAKE LCR:

or the TAKE SAT:

In my opinion it might not have been Energy. Have you looked at Definitive Technology ProMonitors? They are sold at Best Buy:

Wow! Thanks for the quick and thorough reply. A few more questions / bits...

A) Not sure, I only heard the RC-50s so far, I will post back when my RC-30s arrive. If it is the same drivers and you are using port plugs with a pretty high xover then there should be a little difference. My ideal system would have RC-10s all around with a good sub but the 10s are all sold out everywhere I looked.

Am looking forward to your side-by-side review of the RC-30's and the RC-50's with the RCLCR - That would be extremely helpful!

For a receiver, I was gifted a Yamaha HTR-5063 for Xmas. Many features and decent specs, but while much greater clarity and accuracy than the old Teac AV 130 wpc receiver it replaced, not as warm or as much headroom IMHO (still tweaking the Yamaha though). Will see how the speakers work out with the Yamaha and consider a receiver upgrade down the road if necessary. With the lows going to the powered sub, the yamaha should be ok for the near term.

and adding question number:

6) Just how much difference is there anyway between the RC line and the CB / CF line that you can audition at Magnolia? I'm a little nervous about purchasing speakers (shall we say infrequently) without hearing them first. I went into magnolia expecting to go with the Mirage series based upon all of the reviews and expecting some similarity with the ambience drivers on the DBX soundfields, but was disappointed with the nanostats and OS3's for Home theater - Nice speakers but not the sound characteristics I was looking for. The B&W's I listened to with the Kevlar woofers were a tad bright for my tastes as well...

I have Energy RC50s, RC-LCR, and RC 10s surrounds, Mirage S10.

I currently use a Denon avr 989 to power this setup.

Im thinking of upgrading to Onkyo 3007 or 3008 avr for audessey MQXT32

Do onkyo and Energy sound close to Energy and Denon setup?

I can get an Onkyo 3007 for 750.00

But i might want Audessey MQXT32 in the 3008.

Anyone using Onkyo and Energy RC series?

Ok, just left BB. They had the def tech pro monitor 1000 and cb5 signs switched, which is helping me to regain some of my sanity. However in their system things were hooked up correctly, meaning that when I choose the cb5s on the touch screen that was what I was listening to.

So, to make a long story short it was definitely the cb5s that I liked based on sound, but just thought that they looked liked the rounded def tech 1000s.

Although the cb5s are a bit bigger than the 1000s, the sound of the cb5s is well worth it as I liked those over both sets of def techs and even the cb10s as weird as that may sound.

Special thanks to afrogt and Batpig for the pics,

Chris

What does the XT 32 add over Audyssey XT? And would that be better than spending the money on an external amp?

I also have a Denon 989 receiver.

Yes - u nailed it on the head and win today's AVS "I helped someone regain their sanity" award.

Thanks again for the denon info you've provided on this site as I'm likely going to get the 591, it is very much appreciated.
