I was hooping to be able to use my beat-to-hell RC-R on the wall, but mount is a bit loose, almost like where the mounting screw gets threaded in isn't tightly attached to the rest of the thing. No complaints though, it sounds just fine. I've had a chance to test it with another RC-R and they match as they should. Small dent to one of the mid-bass modules doesn't seem to alter the sound.

For my office setup, I'm now thinking about ditching my old Kenwood (moving it to the bedroom) and putting a 3-channel setup in the office. This is getting a little out of hand...

I used Toggler brand drywall anchors and mounted directly in the drywall (no studs). I bought the smallest/lightest duty ones I could find, which were still rated well beyond the weight of the RC-R (like 2-3x). Neither the RC-R or RC-mini are particularly heavy so a smaller dry wall anchor that will leave a similarly small hole in the wall will work just fine.

Here is what I used, though I would probably look for the mini self drilling anchors if I were to buy a new pack.

Also recently seen these Wall Nuts too.

I had initially tried to use EZ anchors (I think that's what brand they were - in anycase there looked extremely similar to the white ones you posted and were all the nearest hardware store had), but I had several either severely bend or break off completely in my walls, even after I pre-drilled. The Toggler brand are much better in my experience, even if you have to go out of your way to a big box home improvement store (Home Depot, Lowes) to find them.

I use EZ anchors all around the house an never had any problem with them. You have to make sure you push them all the way in before you start driving them (screwing them in). You are not supposed to pre drill them because the whole point is to maintain dry wall compression. The only problem occurs if you have to remove something...the dry wall crumbles if the anchor turns, and loses compression. These are NOT meant to be re-used. I had to remove something from it, and had to remove it and use the metal spring toggler bolts afterward...

Found RC-10s on eBay.ca with a "best offer" option. What do you all think would be a reasonable offer? They are listed "buy it now" for $430 +$53 shipping (CAD). If the 5Star deal pops up again Monday I could potentially have a pair of RD-LCRs for $600.
for those of you who thought the RC-50 stock would never dry up, I spoke with a Vann's representative who told me they have ~15 in stock and it looks like they won't be getting any more in.
I wanted to play around this weekend and hook up two of my RC-10s as rears, but I don't have enough speaker wire (14AWG) for both of them, only one. I was going to pick up 50 ft of 16 AWG from Target for $15, but after measuring the distance to my farthest speaker it was ~32ft. This means that I won't have enough on the new spool to reach the second rears.

Silly question, does it matter if I am running 14 AWG to 4 of my speakers and 16 AWG to my 5th? As long as I have the appropriate AWG for the length I think I am fine. Heck, I could have any number of different AWGs and it wouldn't matter one bit. Am I wrong?
you are not wrong, it won't matter

as long as each individual wire is sufficient for its task, there will be no difference.

Hey batpig, congrats on your 15,000th post!

Not bad for a dude from SoCal whose brain is in Costa Rica!

Good having you around dude.
Indeed, Congrats Batpig.

It's, actually, great to have you around...dude.

If I'm not mistaken that is where I got my four RC-10's from. I offered $349 and was rejected. I then offered $350 a pair and it was accepted! I don't think I need to tell you what to do now btw... the speakers are in perfect shape and sound stunning. One of the best purchases I've made in a while. I don't know if $350 a pair is a fair price or not but I am not complaining at all. Good luck!

This DSX got me wondering. I have RC30s front, LCR center, CR-10s back. What would be a great matching "small" speaker for a wide/height to match these? No, I can't fit any tower style RC30s or up to the front. Best would be something smallish to hang. What is the preferred matching "small" speaker for these? Mini-RC setup?

Damn, looks like Vanns is sold out of RC-30s. I was going to order a pair for surrounds since they said they'd give me 10% off, but they've run out. I wish I had nabbed a pair of those RC-Rs. Now I'm contemplating what I should get for rear speakers, any ideas? I was thinking maybe just get a pair of the CR-5 or CB-10, not really sure. Does anyone know where the RC-R can be obtained for a fair price? My fronts are RC-50s and a RC-LCR.
Thanks - $350 CAD + shipping or was that total price?

Lot of reviews going for SR5005 having Purple hue issue and POP of Death issue. Did you experience anything unusual with your 5005?

I have no purple hue, and no pop.

Yeah but I doubt AA will give me 10% off.

I believe I paid around $40 for 2 pair so if your only getting a pair it should be cheaper than that.

At this point if you really want RC-30s Audio Advisor is your best bet. Plus they have free shipping too.

Is it about saving $20 speaker or getting the speakers you really want?

Probably not, unless you call and ask them to match Vanns...

But $400/pr is pretty good, and if they're disappearing it might not be a bad idea.
Well really the issue is that now that the opportunity has gone away to get them from Vanns who I trust, I'm starting to think that maybe it's a better idea to just get bookshelves to use for surrounds instead. I mean is it really that beneficial to use big tower speakers for surrounds anyway? I'd really like dipole speakers but it seems like the RC-R is impossible to find anywhere.

There are a few sets up on ebay now.
Yeah I just meant at a reasonable price. They were going for 129 last week at buy.com
post #25582 of 47684
You should trust Audio Advisor too. they're an authorized Energy dealer and I've purchased speakers and other equipment from them in the past.

They're a very good company to deal with.

Towers are really beneficial if you do a lot of concert DVD's or listen to multichannel music. If your usage is strictly home theater maybe you dont need them.

But like you said its tough to find the RC-Rs.
just get CR-10's, somebody posted a coupon code a few pages back that brings them to under $200/pr.

BTW - Audio Advisor is 100% trustworthy, they are an authorized dealer and carry a lot of high-end gear.

for wides best option would be a pair of RC-10's.

for height you could get away with RC-Mini's... heights get a lot less action than the wides.

Hmmm, time to change my location, I'm going to Mexico next month so my brain is actually a bit farther north these days (but still not quite up here in San Diego)...

So given a choice between heights and wides, wides are better?

Because of some impulse buying, I actually have enough speakers for both right now, might be time for a 9.1 receiver...

CR-10s are wall mount only right? Like I couldn't put them on a stand or something?

correct, if you have space to accomodate them the wides are awesome... if you can do wides AND heights, even better! then you get the DSX "wall of sound" for movies

I have the speakers, but my receiver is 7.1. Managed to grab a pair of RC-10s from Vanns earlier this week on clearance. Between those and the RC-Rs, I have some options right now. Actually running 2 RC-Rs as a 2-channel setup in my office right now and they sound fantastic, put out a surprising amount of bass. Not quite sure where I can put the wides b/c the right side of the room is open. Going to try and work something out though.
