I've decided to go from 7.1 to 5.1, due to my new house and it's weird living room shape and my wifes strange layout of the furniture So now, I've got two RC-10's that need a home. So I thought about hooking them up to my old Sony "Dream System" HTIB do it all receiver in our bedroom. Along with the original sony sub. Will this thing be OK with the RC-10's? Or was it strictly meant to be used with it's original crappy sats only? Sony says it puts out 143 w/channel lol Of course, that's not the case. I've just heard about some Sony HTIB's being 5 ohm or 6ohm or something weird, and did not know if it would be ok with my precious RC-10's. I would much rather just use this setup instead of buying new gear just for the bedroom though. But if need be, I'll go out and buy a cheap Onkyo or something.
What is your setup right now Dave? From what I remember you had the Cox Audio towers as front L/R, and then you bought four RC-10's for the surround/rear channels, right? Did you ever settle on a center, I remember you were debating RC-mini and RC-LCR.

Let me know if you want to dump two of those RC-10's....

As the Sony HTIB, it will probably work fine, although I wouldn't crank it for fear of clipping the amp and damaging the speakers. No way in heck I believe those stated power figures. It's probably a cheap amp and I would be skeptical of the headroom. If I were you, I'd prowl craigslist and ebay for a good cheap used receiver. I imagine for your bedroom system you don't need fancy video switching or a ton of power. You can find an old Denon 16xx or 18xx model for under $100 on ebay, not to mention any number of old Yammy or Onkyo amps, which should do the trick. You can probably sell the "Dream" system on craiglist and recoup most of the cost.

Yes, I have the Cox Audio towers up front and the 4(now 2) RC-10's for surrounds. I still have not purchased a center, in fear that it will not match the Cox towers and actually sound worse. Steve is working on a center channel, so maybe it will be out this year. I've been very happy with a "phantom" setup lately anyhow. I just toed in the towers a little, and it sounds great, even outside of the sweet spot. I tried the RC mini center, and it sounded great, but it just didn't work well with my towers. I might try the RC LCR, but I sure don't want to hassle sending it back if I don't like it. I know it will sound great, but my ears are very picky about the center, matching the fronts. Steve Cox suggested I just stay with the Phantom center, since there is no way I can perfectly match the towers with a center. I'm starting to agree with him. The Cox towers are so good anyway, I might have to spend a ton of money trying to find a center that will match.

Thanks for the advice on the HTIB. I guess it will do just fine with just the two RC-10's. I'm going to try and get them back into my HT someday anyhow. So, no, I don't want to sell them Thanks batpig, for your help

Hey Batpig
Just wanted to update you on the RC-LCR vs AC-300. Living with the new speaker for a few weeks now and did a A/B yesterday. I really notice the difference. The new speaker blends absolutely perfectly with the RC-50's. Just a solid smooth front end. The 300, while a great speaker itself, just tends to stand out. I think for other mains the 300 would work very well, but with the latest RC's the RC LCR is a perfect match. that is all.
Ac-300?
yep. Batpig has them in his setup
I've been wondering about those. Not much info out there it seems. You like them batpig?
Hey Dave. Here is a link to the Emotiva lounge, I have it posted for sale there, there are links to info and some reviews. Very nice speaker, kinda big...

Thanks for the update, sir.... I have no doubt that the RC-LCR is a better speaker, and I certainly would imagine that having the perfect blend would make everything sound better.

Do you agree with the sentiment that the RC stuff sound "smoother" than the older AC-300 (and by extension, C-2, C-4, etc.)? Not just in the sense that the speaker-to-speaker blend is "smooth", but in a more absolute sense (i.e. warmer, fuller midrange, less harshness.)

It seems that they made some improvements in tweeter design as that slight harshness seems to be characteristic of all those aluminum dome tweeter connoisseur speakers, including the C-1/3/5/etc lineup from a few years ago.

Dave - the AC-300 is an older speaker, it was Energy's top-of-the-line LCR speaker in the late 90's (introduced in 1996 I believe, along with the C-2,4,6,8 connoisseur line). It replaced the RVS , and is succeeded in spirit/function by the C-C3 and now the RC-LCR. I use two as my left/right mains in my el-cheapo 2.1 setup. Very nice speakers, rich and full-bodied with excellent bass (rated down to 40Hz), but as I mention above I sense just the slightest, teensiest bit of mid/high harshness.

Check out the reviews on audioreview.com, it is very well reviewed by everyone. It just seems like Energy has really upped the bar with the RC series.

Hey, I recognize those pics! You posted that on LA craigslist, right?

Good luck with the sale! I have to get my plasma mounted first and then I'll worry about adding the center channel. In the meantime I can think about the next bargain and dream about RC-30's in rosenut
post #3131 of 51474
haha, you are always scanning the ads..it's a sickness ya know...just as bad as me!
I think you hit the nail on the head abut sound, just an overall smoothness.. I don't think I would call it harsh, maybe a teeny weenie bit compared to the RC's. Still one mighty fine speaker.
Very cool looking. It's big sucker isn't? I'd love to hear one.
It IS a sickness! I love a bargain!

Your AC-300 looks pretty nice, how are those endcaps looking? Those gloss black finishes are a nightmare to keep from getting scratched up! Of the two I bought used, one of them was pretty good (one endcap was 8/10, the other maybe 7/10) and the second one was a little thrashed (one endcap 6/10, the other 3 or 4/10). I was a little annoyed about that one because it was a typical eBay ad "it's in great condition" with no specifics and those endcaps were in no way in "great condition".

but they are sonically perfect which is all that really matters.... and since they are being used as a stereo pair, I just stick the nastier end on the bottom and don't think about it! I keep a thin rubber pad below them (cut out of the stuff you put under rugs to keep them from sliding around) so they don't get scratched worse.

It's a great speaker, very well reviewed. It was intended as the center for the Connoisseur and Veritas, so it really was Energy's best effort to that point in center channel speakers until they came out with the veritas V2.0C. But that isn't an LCR speaker. As with the RC-LCR, a lot of folks liked to go with 3 AC-300's as L/C/R to have perfectly matching fronts. They are definitely better as L/R mains than the C-2 bookshelves (which I sold to a friend).

I actually love the look of the glossy caps with the black "sock" like in the AC-300 and their Audissey bipolar speakers. Did they steal that look from Def Tech?
Actually the endcaps are perfect, no scratches. I pretty much set it up and did not have to touch it. There are a couple of scuffs on the bevel of the caps on the bottom, really not noticeable though. Yeah, Dave, it is a big puppy.
Totally off topic, but has anybody heard of any new products from Energy? Or will it be a while until we see a new line?
Good question. Don't know but I hope they "klipsch" don't introduce horn drivers into the mix.
I'd like to see some horn's in their line, just not exclusively though. But, at the same time, that would indicate that Klipsch has too much say in what Energy produces(not good). From what I've heard, Energy, Mirage, and Athena are to be pretty much untouched by Klipsch. I guess we'll see though relatively soon.

hmmm, know what I'd do? I'd get or build another shelf that your T.V. can stand on. Have a ledge on there for your cat to sleep (he likes the warmth from the T.V.) and underneath that put your center channel there. It will sound fine - just make sure the drivers are out from under the shelf.

Now, everyone is happy
That's funny batpig. I know how it is. I think that's the real reason I don't have a center channel as well. My cat loves my toasty warm plasma.

Any reviews of the Energy C-500 speakers, they are on sale at Futureshop for $499.
I listed to them locally (c-500's) and thought they sounded pretty good. wasn't in a very good listening invironment but for that price they're a steal.
Does anyone have any real-world pics of the RC-10 (in each of the various finishes) and RC-Mini Center (in each of the various finishes)? I have been thinking of biting the bullet in the next few months, but I can't seem to find any pictures of how the colors actually look, especially the cherry finish. Thanks.

I only own cherry RC-10s but there you go:

Wow, mouettus, those speakers dwarf the monitor! That looks like they're really up in your face there! Did you accidentally say "cherry" when you meant "rosenut"?

rAInMo - dig around this thread a bit. WestCoastD has posted many photos of his setup, and he has several RC's all in cherry finish.

EDIT: Check out post #359 and #360, he posted pics of his cherry finish RC-30, RC-LCR, and old RC-Mini's there.

If you are patient they will eventually come on for $399. And if you add them to your price watch they may offer you a lower price the week they are on sale for a brief period. For instance: When they came on sale this week for $499, a day later I was sent a notification that they were now on sale for $450. A few weeks before that, I was sent one saying that I could get them for $399.

Sorry my bad. Rosenut they are. And yes the eat my monitor but with the grilles on it looks better. It was just so the guy could see the color. I don't have the best camera either. Seems like wall color is very red, but it isn't.

Monitor is a 22". Looks small between the 10s :P I love the monitor btw. If someone is in for a new one, this Samsung 2253bw is a lovely one if you can bare some minor bleeding from the top.

Speakers are approx. 28" from my ears and are 28" apart. They really do sound better from a distance but I really like the sound anyways. I get a nice bass boost from the corner of the room. Good thing because the listening position is in a big bass null. Everything is EQ'd in winamp.

I haven't yet. I'm just finishing a bathroom renovation right now... after that

I'm torn between the C-300's ($199 on sale at FS) or the C-500's.

I currently have the c-c50 center and the c-50 book shelves. I love the c-50's for music and movies so to my thinking I'll be more then happy with the 300's or 500's. Just depends on the budget.
