So I have this "spare" CC-5 after having upgraded to the CC-10.
Has anybody used a center speaker in the back in combination with surround speakers? Is there lots of 6.1 sources out there? I guess most 7.1 receivers would combine surround backs in 7.1 sources in 6.1 setups?
How far from the listener should a single back center speaker be located? I guess if I can't put it at least a few feet behind the heads of the listeners, the sound would be too localized. What about on the floor behind a couch, say firing up?
I want to apologize if I miss punctuation when I write, English is not my first language and if you try my language you will have trouble writing to me, so don't get upset with me just be patient with me thanks.
I was running the Audyssey today and notice how much deeper the RC-30's sounded with test tones vs. the RC-LCR. This is probably going to sound stupid, but this is because I have the two foam plugs in, right?

It didn't sound much deeper than my RC-Mini CC.
Probably, take the plugs out and see what happens. Pretty simple experiment to try.
I have a RC Mini CC and RC LCR and the LCR plays MUCH deeper!

Yeah.....take the plugs out......
also, how long have you been using it? I've had my LCR for a few months and I am just noticing how deep it plays. I think there is a pretty long break in period to get the woofers moving. Give it some time.
So I just received my RCLCR. I will be placing it on my TV stand. The stand itself has 3 shelves.
The top, of course, houses the TV itself. The middle has 2 rubber feet (one on the left and one on the right) as well as one in the back which hold it in place. The bottom one is resting on the actual bottom of the tv stand.
My question is, if I place the speaker on the 2nd shelf so that it is up higher - will I likely have to worry about vibration/rattle from the glass? The glass itself is fairly sturdy - but can be moved with a decent amount of force.
Also - I have the Pioneer VSX-1021-K receiver. I was going to biamp the RC-10's and the RCLCR. The manual shows how to biamp the left and right mains, but doesn't show an option to bi amp the RCLCR. Is this not doable?
It might depend on the quality of the shelving unit. I have a Bello and that thing totally pulls its weight and more. I was worried about it exploding when I first set everything up, but I don't think that I have anything to worry about now. If you do end up hearing vibrations from the glass, you can always put little foam spacers between the speakers and the glass. Also you could put foam spacers between the glass shelves and the frame of your unit, the weight of your gear will keep everything secure.
I would definately put the speakers up to the front edge of any glass shelf though.
As already suggested, I wouldn't bother with the biamping of your speakers.
Well the original question is somewhat moot. I ordered 3 LCRs and a pair of RC-10s - that I thought would be here today, but alas I think I have to wait one more day.
But sure Hank, here are more details and a pic attached. Listening distance is approx 14' from the tv. The depth in the photo is tough, the uppers of the builtins are recessed about 10" on both sides with the stone facade being proud of the bottom cabinets another 4-6" and the mantle is ~11". In the pic the CB-20s are in blue boxes, with potential location for main LCRs in red boxes. That top shelf under the windows is closer to 5' than I thought (probably 58"). And I was wanting to use them vertically if they fit, even though it gets those speakers up a little higher than would be ideal.
Other option, which is probably the best location, is to put the main LCRs on the counter level in front of shelves. Unfortunately that will likely earn the disapproval vote from my wife.
Towers/stands have not bee a consideration in this room with 2 little kids and a rowdy lab, so we're stuck with what we've got. Someday maybe I'll tear them all out and re-do it so it fits what I'm running.
That is a complicated shelving unit to visualize without a picture, now it is much more clear. If the RC-LCR doesn't fit under the tv, you can most likely slide the tv up the mounting bracket (depending on the bracket but most will)to accomodate a different height for what you need.
You can always tilt the higher main LCR's to hit your main listening area. Many people have their main speakers much to close together to get the optimal soundstage and sound, so you will have no problems there
I agree that the counter level might be best, but you have to work with what you have, right? The RC-LCR's are a great sounding speaker.
Hi - just wanted to say thanks to Hank for promoting the Veritas 1.8's. I acquired a pair a few weeks ago and loving them!
The soundstage is mind-blowing, especially for material that moves to the outer edges. Speakers are at 45 degrees from the LP easily hear stuff at almost 90. Even thought I heard some surround once : )
Imaging is superb. When I first demo'ed these I looked for the hidden center channel ; )
No problems man! I'm more than happy to spread the good word to fellow members here. I was kind of worried when I didn't see you posting for a bit. I thought that either something happened to you, or that you got a defective set of speakers or that you paired them up with a garbage receiver and hated the sound. I'm glad it was none of the above
Enjoy them dude, but remember that they are not "club loud" speakers. They will not sound loud ever, until they are pushed beyond the amp or their abilities, but once bad things happen, it will become very expensive, very quickly. To put it in perspective, the RC-70's will sound loud waaaay before your Veritas will, because of the 70's limits.
Also, the more space that you can give these 1.8's the better, play around and fall in love. Congrats on the last and best set of speakers you should ever need
So I have this "spare" CC-5 after having upgraded to the CC-10.

You're right, the RC-30's will and should sound much deeper than the RC-LCR. It has a lot more cabinet space to produce bass with, and will also do a better job doing it. As others have said, take the plugs out if you want lower frequencies, but it may not sound as crisp. The RC-LCR is a much more capable speaker than the RC-Mini for fuller overall sound.
This is for anyone that is concerned about the power of their amp in relation to newer Energy speakers. Right now I am using RC-70's with a pre and power amp. The dB level in an 11' by 13' room is about 53 dB's (border line conversation friendly) in listening position and I am using much less than approximately .001 of a watt. The best judge of a setup is the sound, not the power ability. Newer Energy speakers are very efficient.
I've been using the take classics for some time now and i'm still very impressed at the sound these speakers produce.
So I recently upgraded my receiver to the onkyo tx-nr809 and want to take advantage of the 7.1 setup. Anyone selling or know where to get 2 additional speakers
Ah so at least a few movies have a dedicated back channel. Interesting to know. Now as I am forced to put my couch back to a wall (the living room is rather small), I think I should not bother trying to wire and suspend a center back speaker (I don't want wires across the floor so I'll have to drill a few holes in the floor).
At ear level, the speaker would be so close to the listeners that I suspect it would be annoying, and rather strange-looking. Much higher, the sound will be coming from the top; and since a center speaker is quite directional this will be noticeable I guess. I was wondering if placing it on the floor, behind the couch, perhaps firing up, would give interesting results. Maybe the sound will be too muffled; or maybe the multiple reflexions between the walls and couch will do the job for dispersing the sound and creating a surround field. Any thought?

That strategy is a good compromise and is recommended in situations like yours. Reflections for surrounds can be your friend, so do not be afraid of it. Sound coming from above is also not that bad, as long as it is angled towards the listener. There is a Bi-pole Di-pole surround thread in the speaker forums that is pretty helpful (it is a sticky)
Well, after having my RC-10s and RC-LCR for a day I have to say I am in love. They sound very crisp and detailed. So much better than the older infinity's I had. And I haven't even broken them in yet!
So now comes my dilemma. I am trying to decide if I want to snatch up a 2nd pair of RC-10's for the surround speakers or if I want to move the RC-10's I just received to the surrounds and get some floor standing speakers like the RC-30's or RC-50's.
Any ideas or recommendations? Also - is Ebay really the place to go for the 30s and 50s or are there other sites that are selling them? The RC-10s are still on sale at Vann's until the end of the day today. Decisions, Decisions!

The goal was to use a spare center speaker (CC-5) after having upgraded (for a CC-10), so I won't invest in a dipole/bipole speaker (such as the CR-10) for a single surround back. I hope the tiny CC-5 will be powerful enough to hear something even placed behind the couch, but you opinion is interesting, and I think I'll try it and hope my receiver will compensate adequately for volume after calibration. I'll try running a wire across the room first, and if it's satisfying I'll drill the holes and hide it.

You'll have to be patient (or lucky) to find a pair of RC-30s or 50s at a reasonable price. Where are you located? If you're in the states, e-Bay, Craigslist and Audiogon are good places to look.
Another option for you to consider is buying two more LCRs for front L/R duties.

If you're wanting to get RC towers make sure you're paying a good price for them. Especially if you're looking at eBay some people have them listed for way more than they're worth.
It's up to if you have the money. RC-10 speakers are great, and RC towers are great too. It just depends on if it's worth the money to you to have more bass and a more "full" sound coming from your mains.
GaresTaylan, I still have a pair of RC-30s left from my upgrading to Veritas. Actually jjl4004 just bought my RC-50s from that set up. The Rc-30s were used as the surrounds. PMed you and let me know if you are interested.

keep you eye out on craigslist......there were 2 pairs of rc-50's in the boston area recently. I think once was asking $650/pr and the other was asking $800/pr.
Thanks for the replies, everyone. I noticed that not only do they seem to be overpriced on eBay, almost all of the sellers will not accept returns. That worries me a tad.
I really have no problems with the RC-10's up front as well. My sub puts out some great bass - but I did want that "fuller" sound you tend to get from a tower.
Are the CF series worth looking at and would they compliment the setup I have at all? Ive seen some people on here say the CF are not as high quality as the RC's were or that they may not blend well with the RC's? I ask because I found a deal online that could net me a pair of CF-70's for around $480.

NOOOOOO!!! (The way Luke Skywalker screams it when he finds out his father is Vader)
Use that $480 towards RC towers. The CF-70s are indeed the best sounding of the new C-series, but their brighter sound would not only not mix, but would leave you trying to sell them to get RC towers. Skip that step and just get towers. You may have to be patient but people are selling them from time to time.

This is a great deal for CF-70's though, probably less than half the suggested retail price. Is it too much to ask where you found that? I'm myself interested in CF-70's (the rest of my setup is C-series), but I have trouble finding them at reasonnable prices. Thanks.
