Congrats Batpig!

That 20,000 looks cool under your name. I think I would create a new screen name just so tat 20,000 will stay there forever.

I was once lost in the wilderness trying to set up my new Denon receiver several years ago, until I found the Denon to English dictionary online. Thanks and congratulations Batpig.

So i changed the crossover in my three V-5.2-C to 80hz. i noticed that there was more depth, more bass of course, the sound filled the room somewhat better than at 40hz. I noticed that when listening to internet radio the bass was too much, so i forgot that i had set the volume on my subwoofer (Energy SW8) yeah i know, need to upgrade to SVS PB1000 before to 7 so i lower it to 3 or 4 and now the bass is tight, just about right in all sources, even the TV sounds better now with the Center channel. I need to tweak it around a little better, haven't tried the new setting on blu ray, but that's the thing about this hobby of ours, you're never satisfied, you're never there, and when you think that you are, bada bing!, something else, something new, a new workaround, something you read, heard or saw, and you want to try it.

I'd tell you, this HT/sound thing is intoxicating, addicted. I WANT MORE.

How will CB-20s as mains and a V-Mini-C as center work together?

I am finally upgrading my front speakers from Take Classic 5.1 setup and I'd like to stick with Energy if I can. Other than budget, my biggest limiter is space for the center channel. I only have about 5" clearance where it needs to go so I cannot use the CC-10 and the only energy option is either my current Take Classic or the V-Mini-C. I'm pretty sure the tiny Take CC is going to be overwhelmed by the CB-20s but what about the V-Mini-C? I know I could go with V-Minis for the Mains too but I was hoping to get a more substantial upgrade in sound quality.

Only other decent option I have found are to go with DefTech for LCR but I prefer the sound of the Energy.

Thoughts?
It is not critical that all the fronts are the same brand. Only that they have the same sound characteristics.
The V-Mini center will definitely be better than your Take Classic center and should match well with your CB-20's. Go for it.

Hi All,

First time post from someone who has gradually acquired an Energy speaker (that is sitting NIB in my closet right now) system and needs a little input on my next steps.

I have the following

2x RC-70
2x RC-LCR
6x RC-10
V-SW10 Subwoofer

I am trying to figure out what I should use to power my new setup? I would love to keep the price to a $1000 or less. I was thinking of going 7.1 and having a pair of RC-10s as zone 2 speakers. I have 3x Carver A-400x 2channel -200 watt per channel amplifiers sitting unused. I also have a single Parasound HCA-1000A 2channel -125 watt per channel amplifier gathering dust right now. I don't necessarily need to use them, just wanted to say they were there if needed and for flexibility.

My local BestBuy has a Denon AVR4311CI on clearance for $999. Not sure if this is a good deal, whether it would be a good match for my setup or overkill? I have also owned Pioneer receivers and separates and was pleased with those as well.

My space is about 15 feet across and 17 feet deep, standard height ceiling and enclosed on all sides. We listen to about 50% music/30% TV and movies/20% xbox360.

Been enjoying all the great information and interactions in this thread for the past few years and have finally decided to jump in too.
Jump on that 4311 ASAP!

It's a no brainer, that will give you top of the line room correction and insane flexiblity with 9 channels, DSX, etc. Not at all overkill.

Is that a typo or do you really have TWO of the RC-LCRs?

Would your room accommodate wide or height speakers?

Thanks everyone for the kind words! smile.gif

I'm sure my wife wouldn't agree with you about the impressiveness of my "accomplishment", but it's been a pleasure helping people all these years. It might be entertaining for someone to go back and look at my early posts when I was just a total noob; when I first started on this forum I didn't know a darn thing about HT and was just looking for information about a pair of Energy e:XL-15 bookshelf speakers I had picked up for $20 on my local craigslist. That was the beginning of a long journey smile.gif

I agree with the others that the V-Mini-CC will be a major upgrade over the Take center, and the match with the CB-20's will be fine. That said, you might instead want to look around and see if you can find a pair of RC-10's or V-5.1's instead of the CB-20's, which will be better and a closer match.

Or if that deal is still going on at WWStereo, you can get a pair of the V-5.2-C's to use as L/R mains.

Wow. Sounds exactly like most of us. I mean the noob part, and the information part, and of course the unimpressed wife part. Lol. biggrin.gif

You have a Denon receiver right? The bloated bass you are hearing with internet radio is probably due to Dynamic EQ overboosting the compressed music source. Your bass might now be too low on film sources. I assume this means you changed the sub volume from the calibrated value from Audyssey?

Instead of lowering the sub volume, you should go into the Audyssey settings for that input and lower the Reference Level Offset value to 10 or 15, which will cut down on the boomy bass without impacting the bass level for other sources. I would also suggest this offset for cable TV and any other music or streaming sources.

Any feedback in the potential for the v2.0Ri's as surrounds, from my post a page or two back (which has pictures for reference)? Or for what I might try and find them for price-wise on the used market?

Aside from preserving them for longevity reasons (I assume), is there any reason I shouldn't run my V2.2i's as my mains? Just a general question.

Yes, I do have 2 RC-LCRs, picked them up at the Meijer sale a bit back. Not sure why I opted for two, but I did.

My room could work with heights and/or wides. Is there any advantage to using one over the other?

Will try to get to BestBuy today and see if the receiver is still in stock. Thanks for the help!
Wides are recommended by Audyssey as providing the biggest upgrade in surround immersion, with heights second. I think if you have the ability to accommodate them, they do add an impressive effect to a lot of content.

If you could score a third RC-LCR, and you want to go whole hog with the capabilities of the 4311, then I might suggest the following layout:

2 x RC-70's at FR/FL main, 1 RC-LCR at center
2 x RC-LCR's as front wides
6 x RC-10's as surrounds, surround backs, and front heights

You already have the external amps needed to make this happen and take advantage of the 11ch capability of the 4311. All you would need is one extra RC-LCR at center.

Then I would add a second VSW-10 and take advantage of the dual sub calibration capability! biggrin.gif Then you would be rocking full 11.2!

That sounds about right Batpig. Yes i have the Denon 1912. Actually the boomy bass is just with SOME internet radio stations, not with TV, Google Tv, Ipod or my turntable. Haven't tried the BD source to see.

On some sources the volume level that Audyssey gave me was -4.5, so i raised it to -3 for internet radio and -2 for phono.

It was a lot boomier when the SW volume on the actual SW at 7, when i lowered to 4 it sounde much better, but i will try lowering the Reference Level Offset value to 10 or 15 on the internet radio source.

Thanks

Well, you mentioned you had tried the RVSS before and actually preferred the direct radiators as surrounds right? The V2.0Ri's should be an upgrade from the RVSS. The RVSS were the same generation as your other speakers (e.g. AC-300, C-6, A5+2, etc) so you have a sense of the quality difference between those speakers and the Veritas. Obviously the difference will be less noticeable as surrounds, but you can expect a similar jump in quality to the V2.0Ri's.

Looking at your room photos, if you do get the V2.0Ri's then it would be logical to mount them on the side walls to either side of the couch and run them as dipoles. If I'm reading the photos right it does look like you have a wall to either side, correct? You could even leave the C-6's back there and just run them as surround backs.

I would expect to pay $400-500 for a used pair.

I wouldn't worry about "preserving" them, they are speakers, USE THEM! biggrin.gif

The only reason not to use them as mains is that you would be relegating your long-sought-after APS 5+2's to secondary duty. That's really a question for you to settle, whether you'd rather have the V2.2's set up as a dedicated 2ch setup somewhere else (e.g. the office) or integrate them as the mains in your primary setup.

If you do go that route, you could use the APS 5+2's as wides although it's a bit of overkill there as you won't be using the built-in subs too heavily. If you do that, I would swap them, moving the V2.2i's to the inside position flanking the screen, and then scoot the 5+2's out as far as possible and up the wall a bit to get more angular separation.

Batpig, I have been trying to google and without trying to find my manual or download the PDF and searching through pages for the 4311. Can I do heights and wides at the same time with the 4311? Since I got the RC-Rs I moved my RC-10s on Sanus stands to wides and they fit much better in my room than I ever thought. I would just hook them up and run Audyssey to check for myself, but I have to unhook everything and send the 4311 off to get fixed since the front left height channel went out and it would be a big pita.

Yes, 4311 supports all 11 channels simultaneosly with an extra 2ch amp, and any 9 channels simultaneously with internal amps.

Thanks I knew it did 9 channels simultaneously, but for some reason I thought it had some restriction on what channels you could run without an amp. IE only heights/ backs, wides/backs etc..
what would you do?

Was into the local future shop and they have a pair of CR-10 surrounds they will sell for $199 I think regular was 429 or 459 something like that.

Currently i have RC70's up front a veritas v5.2 center and some old bose for surround.

Should I buy the cr-10s or just a set of bookshelfs for the rear surrounds?

You are probably thinking of the first 9-channel Onkyos (i.e. x007 series) which couldn't run heights + wides at the same time.

All the 9ch Denons (4810, 4311, and now 4520) never had that restriction.

$199 for the pair? Jump on it, it will be a HUGE upgrade from the Bose and be a very close match to the other speakers tonally.

While we are on the topic concerning heights and wides, and batpig your insight would be appreciated (after 20,000 posts...we're not worthy, we're not worthy), what exactly is the difference? I'm running the best RC setup I could find while they were all still available, with 2 70's, an LCR, and VS surrounds because I couldn't find RC-Rs. I round out my low end with a couple Outlaws, Plus and EX, and have some leftover Polk Monitor 30's that belonged to my first run into an actual HT setup.

Question being that I mounted the Polks outside of my FR/FL by about a foot, and about six feet off the ground. I'm running a Yamaha RXV-671 and running the Polks off of Zone 2. Is my placement optimal?

Thank you to everyone on this thread, batpig, cel, losservatore, pokekevin, and everyone else has been extremely helpful with everything. Batpig major props.
