I then tried Mirage OMD-5s and settled on the VS running in di-pole, wall-mounted above ear level.

Oh. Never tried it but I thought for the bass on the rc70s would be good. I guess a second sub would do that. My vminis will be up over ear level just below the ceiling as fill ins.

Is it wood or MDF ?

ANYONE !?

its black ash veneer on top of MDF.

pretty much all speakers are MDF. Most will put a vinyl finish on top but RC series uses a real wood veneer.

How hard will it be for you to refinish your speakers? Depends on your skill level.

Hmmm. Not going to try veneer on them as a first attempt. I would stain and spray varnish them if they were wood, or even spray-paint something similar to the room (espresso). I can spray really well without leaving drips/runs.

I assume the drivers are all easy to remove, but what about the magnets for the grills? Mask them maybe? Hmmmm. Found some espresso spray paint, then I could gloss finish them...

Anyone have a pair of Energy VS's in good shape they want to sell?

If you remove the drivers, can you re-use the same screw holes when re-installing the drivers? I've never taken one apart.

That's a good price for the V-S Surrounds. Much more reasonable than some prices I have seen.
yes, people have replaced drivers in their RC speakers before.you would use the same screw holes. Actually folks have take apart the speakers just to see how they were built.

I would not take the drivers out ever........unless you have to. I had to once to determine if it was a bad bass driver........but it ended up being a bad crossover...........

The drivers are mounted sooooo tight that they do not want to come out.......and you risk damaging the finnish........around the edges of the driver............like peaces break off !!!

I hear you there. A xacto or utility knife around the mounting surface first, to loosen the finish before popping it off. Even if I did splinter it a bit, a little fill and sandpaper before refinishing them would do the trick anyway. I am so stuck right now. The savings alone in refinishing some 70's over buying 6.3's just for the "look" is insane. Even Martin Logan Montion 40's are almost 1,100 a pop.

painting over wood veneer is a really bad idea, a option is if you have a really good skills with wood ,remove the veneer and replace it for another one.

Just got an email from Acoustic Sound Design pointing me in the direction to purchase from them.
Also found a 15% off promo code that works so the total for a pair of the VS surrounds are 467.50
with free shipping. I never followed Vanns pricing on these, any of you think this is a good price for these?

I also am debating with my cortex layer.....(and hoping there are no apes nearby with any ideas) ...........about snagging two more RC-70's.......I'm in Canada and have some held for pickup at FS. I already have 2 RC 70's as mains on my main setup............Paradigm LCR 450 center...........RC 50's are my rears.......Paradigm Servo 15 sub. But I may want another set of RC 70's for my 2 channel system....I pulled out my DENON PMA-2000IVR amp and am currently listening to it with the 70's and various cd and SACD's...............from the analog outputs of my Oppo 103..........sounds absolutely outstanding.

It really is not much money for such speakers.........have not decided yet..........but did want a really good set for my two channel system (I do have Paradigm Studio 20 V1's that I was going to use but a tower might be nicer......might use the 20's for some surroung channels).
Mike as ASD is not selling them on is site, More than likely because of the "TV15" code which applies 15%. off.

I noticed this too, only on amazon for the time being, also not on ASD, ebay store.

Correction: He wasn't selling them on is site, not he is. Great to be able to apply coupon .

I'm sort of in the same boat. I have an unused Marantz receiver sitting in the closet and purchased a cheap pair of Pioneer towers based on many the excellent reviews I read. Now, I'm tempted to get the RC-70s from FS. The Pioneers were only $180 CAD a pair. I must admit the Pioneers sound really detailed, especially in the midrange but they could use a sub. With the RC-70s, no sub required. If I got the RC-70s, what to do with the Pioneers:o

not bad for a discontinued and really hard to found product you should go for it, did you ask how many they have in stock that could be just a pair ,also I think they are a authorized dealer, 5 years of warranty.

$369 for a pair seems aweful familiar last year around july / august time frame from Vanns. I could look at my statement, I had returned a pair of VS surrounds.

542021944 Energy VS SURROUND SPEAKER $179.88

Price paid 07/23/12 each

Just curious on that pricing. Buying from Vanns had its advantages, they seemed really good with their pricing. $467.50 for these from ASD seems reasonable with the
free shipping. Not sure what the used market value is for these.

They are an authorized dealer and if they arrive damage they replace with no return shipping on my part. Sounds good

For a very short time, they were $149 each, but towards the end they were $179 for quite a while. I have a pair that I was trying to sell (where were you???), but zero interest so I jumped on three of the V5.2C speakers so I would at least have a 5 channel set.

Mike from ASD said he has 62 pairs arriving on Wednesday and then thats it for the Veritas line.
Perhaps a energy owners AVS discount code is in order?

BTW

doesnt look like the V5.1 qualifies for the 15% discount "TV15" code.

Its the only one im seeing that doesnt so far.
