Seriously, good job, and good documentation. Time to play something loud!

Thanks Warren. Yeah - sorry it was not done when you came over but hey - now you have an excuse to stop by if you are around ATL again!

I think the new Transformers will fit the bill for something loud.

Just wondering Jase, Did you use the Guides at the Side like in my Sketch-up ?, so the Masking tracks straight and close to the Screen ...

Cheers mate....

Thanks Cinema Mad. I used an aluminum U track down the left/right side with a guide block. I think if I were doing it over - I would use something like your design shows because that is a great idea. I have lots of ideas for how to improve this system and plan on uploading a few more detailed pics today of the final system.

Nice work Jason! I may give a vertical version a shot a some point. How far from the screen is the masking?

Thanks for the pics and build process.

Jason,

Let me just say that your final product looks excellent! Thanks for sharing.
That is fantastic, really fantastic!

What was the total investment in $$ to make it happen? Time?

So when are taking orders for your Pro Mask System Jase, I am keen to put in my order ....

Would love to see some pics of the way you fitted the masking system over you screen & your U track system if not to much trouble..

Also interested to know, if you were to do it over would you stick with the Somfy LT30 or go up to the somfy 50 (ir) as I am seriously looking at the somfy 50, Mainly because I am sure this is the motor(s) Carada uses in there Masquerade Horizontal & vertical masking system...

Cheers....

Thanks guys! I have decided that I will put together a detailed DIY horizontal masking guide for everyone similar to the candy counter. I was just going to snap some more pics but feel like some images need more discussion so...look for that coming soon (meaning at the latest by the end of the week).

kjlewie-it is right on top of the Carada border which sits off the screen 1". It slides on some slick plastic pads (I will have a picture of that in the construction plans for retro fit masking systems).

Cinema - I would probably go with the 50 because Ken told me it is quieter and more powerful. Honestly - the 30 is not too loud but at any rate I would opt for the 50.

Anyone have any recommendations for a movie that uses 1:85:1?? War of the worlds says it is but for some reason it plays in 1:73:1. I want to program the My position on the somfy motor for 1:85:1 and can't seem to find any movies in that format off hand.

Aren't most romantic comedies 1.85?
Jason,

Awesome, simply AWESOME!
Some great engineering - Congratulations for a job very well done.

Looking forward to the final documentation.

Jason,

First, awesome job on the masking system. It makes me want to build one now too. Can't wait for your DIY write up.

Second, I think Hellboy 1 & 2 are 1.85.
1st Spider Man was also 1:85.
Cool. I'm next!

Awesome job Jason. Gosh, I'm getting excited about re-making my screen and implementing a side masking system. I would like to see those detailed pics as well when you get the chance.

Great work - looking forward to the guide. Might push me into finally working on Screen Wall II

I got all fired up and showed my wife the video last night. Youtube stuttered a bit and all I got was a "that's neat" with 1/10th of my enthusiasm. Oh well, she'll dig it more if I build it I am sure.

LOL! Don't count on it. I brought my wife down all fired up that finally it was working and she said..."that's nice babe - are you going to come up in a few minutes for dinner?" That's it...That's nice? Oh well. I'm still fired up about it for the both of us.

Dave - I think I have around 300 in it. 1/10th cost of professional system.

160 somfy motor w/ir and power supply.
50 somfy coil spring, brackets and IR remote
80 aluminum rollers and bars
40 black velvet
wood/screws/flange bearings/etc 20

Time - 8 hours just masking system. Screenwall rebuild - 16 hours because I had to build new fabric wrapped panels and trial and error with masking and screenwall.

ha, that is exactly what my wife will say once i have it up and running. if you do end up writing up a build thread, that would be most appreciated by all of us. your hard work is truly a gift to the community!

Wow >> I've heard this anti-techno-downer comment before - Hang in there and trust the force, stay the course...

I am making a small change to the masking side design. I originally used wooden blocks traveling inside an aluminum C channel to keep the masks straight in front of the screen. Last night I cut a small block of wood and added 2 - 1.5" rubber casters to it to make a wheel base that will travel up and down the track. I think it will work better than the wooden block and travel easier. Admittedly this is just tinkering...but I feel it is a better solution than the wooden travel blocks. Pictures tomorrow when I have it all put together.

Thanks John

Check out ScottJ0007's build for side masking. I think he nailed it but used a different motor/limit switches design to automate.http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=941076

If I build side masking - I will emulate his design but use Somfy motors, coils springs, ribbon spools and ribbon cable instead.
$300 is a steal. I read the other DIY masking thread over in the 2.35 section, but it seemed like the motor had so much complexity to it. Grabbing something pre-built is much more to my liking. Kudos.

hey jason, did you have a chance to test out the jog macros you were talking about earlier? any success?

p.s. more pics are always useful for us dense folks!!

Hey Anthony. Yes - Jog works successfully. I am not able to get the my position set - but not because of the somfy motor - rather the PS3 or Panny Projector seems to take a 1:85:1 Aspect ratio movies and converts it to 16x9.

This is ok - I guess - but seems strange. Anyhow - jog up and jog down are about a 1" move at a time. I don't know if I will use this much but I programmed it into my universal remote just in case.

Still working on the how to guide but have been busy recently.
thats great news jason, thanks for taking the time to test out the jog. i guess im gonna start to order the motors i need and start a design as well (ie. copy yours!!)

Awesome. I will be watching your thread for progress pics. I also have a couple of new ideas to share if you are interested that I think would be improvements to my design.

Jason,

Where did you do all of your MAME research? I'm looking to read up on how to build one and was wondering where you did your research.
