Are we going backwards in regards to Redbook CD playback? To my ears the best sounding CD players are the ones that are based on DAC chips that were designed specifially for Redbook PCM. Before we got carried away with all of this 24bit 96/192 Khz upsampling/over sampling business.

I find players built around chips like the Burr Brown PCM63 are the most analog sounding with CD material. Am I alone in feeling this way? Anyone care to comment?

rbrb: Not alone, but hey SACD is dying because of convience, of lets say the iPod and so is CD.. Redbook CDs are for the most part better recorded, upsampling does help, depends on how you look at it.

You have to consider the majority of the CDs people own are redbook 2ch. The newer formats are being taken advantage of in new/popular releases.

I agree, the 2-channel, redbook cd-players in the beyond consumer brand name arena. Also the tubbed CD players and other various mods used make it interesting.

well if one is still using analog sound as the yardstick he/she might just go back to analog recordings using tape players or turntables :)

vinyl-o-philes will be delighted to learn that a lot of digital advocates still use analog source as the reference for comparison. certainly no wrath here !!!
