Here's two questions. 1) When I record it to my hard drive I'm assuming that an hour show would be like 2 gigs. If I then burn it to a dvd to watch on my tv won't it be in high definition? I heard that you can only burn high def to hddvd or blu-ray discs but a normal dvd will hold 4.7 gigs won't it?

2) I could hook my computer up to my tv but I'm not sure what connection to use. My tv has a vga in port and an hdmi port. My computer has a vga out and a dvi out. I can get a cable that will do dvi to hdmi. Which would be the better video connection? I'll have to deal with audio a different way.

The resolution of a standard DVD is limited to 480p. HD resolutions are higher at 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are 1080i. Blu-Ray will also output 1080p.

Playing a standard DVD on an upconverting player looks pretty good, though.

Thanks man. I learned something today. I assumed that the resolution had only to do with the size of the file. I had no idea that a regular dvd couldn't show 720p.

Did anyone else read this in the paper www.reporternews.com/sports fans disappointed local fox is not HD Hopefully that will put some more pressure on them to do something quicker. I still don't buy the part where the owner says they will go digital and HD the same time. With the lack of money the station has I don't see it happening.

Just posted a little mini rant there...not that it will help matters at all.

Hey guys, I am trying to get a hold of a HR20 HD DVR Reciever so I can get over-the-air locals from Direct TV. Besides ebay, (and Best Buy, who no longer has them in stock and Circuit City, who say they have 4, but have to send them back to Direct TV) how can I get one? Any other stores have them in town?

It doesn't make any sense to me why Direct TV doesn't offer this box anymore. How do they think they are going to sign up customers if you can't watch and record local channels? I've been on the phone with them off and on all day and they don't seem to care.

My personal opinion regarding D* not having OTA capabilities in their new receivers is that they will have locals for most of the country before long and they want you to have to get the locals from them, probably for a fee.

I have the HR20's and several of us locally do and we all got them on ebay.

I'll bet the managers of the local CC, BB and other electronics pushers are upset that they can't do this year what they were doing even 2 years ago....selling HDTV's to people getting ready for the Superbowl. I hope this is the last major sporting event that Fox scored for this year so I can just delete the channel from my remotes "favorites" until they go digital. If they get the sweet 16/final 4 or NBA playoffs I will go insane.

edit- about the Direct/Dish thing...I have a bro-in-law in town that wants to ditch Dish but the lack of locals on Direct and the missing NFL Network on Suddenlink are the only things keeping him from switching. Seems that in this town you can't have everything no matter how much you're willing to spend..

I know I am one of the few people that watches the CW, but has anyone had any luck getting a waiver from whoever broadcasts our CW to get the CW from another market? I have D*.

Not a chance that I am aware of.

..

Preach it brother, I didn't even want to watch the LSU/OSU game last week just knowing it would be in crappy standard def.... I can't believe it's 2008 and we're still having to endure network SD.....
Well there will be at least the Dayton 500 on Fox in Feb. Whether or not you consider that major or not I don't know but I like to watch it so at least one more year of that in SD. I don't recall what else they have until the NFL starts back up again.

Heck if they get the HD up and running I might even watch some of their other programming besides sports.

I'm sure the people at KXVA are happy that the Cowboys won't be in the Superbowl this year....it should cut the "NO HD??!" complaints in half at the very least..
Dang Cowboys just keep screwing things up this year don't they?

Anyone else lose KRBC's digital signal this weekend?

I was driving by Suddenlink tonight and saw this on their sign "The Superbowl in HD, only on Suddenlink". Does anyone know how they are pulling this off?

Seriously? The only way they could do this is by piping in a Fox affiliate from another area...Lubbock or DFW. If so then they either got permission from KXVA or don't care what they think about it..

I just got off the phone with Suddenlink and they said that KTAB is going to broadcast the game in HD. I asked the person about it being broadcast by FOX, but all she knew was that KTAB was going to air it...wierd.

That is wierd but...if KTAB is airing it then doesn't that mean that anyone with an ATSC/HD tuner and an antenna could get the game in HD?
Thread Starter
I looked on the KTAB website and there is not a word about the Superbowl being shown on KTAB. I think the person at Suddenlink does not know what she is talking about. Maybe they assume the Superbowl is on CBS since it was on CBS last year. Or maybe it just more false advertising by Suddenlink.
Well I too have checked the KTAB website along with Suddenlink, Fox, and Abilene Reporter News and there is nothing anywhere.

I find it hard to believe that they would mistakenly put that on their sign and if it is on KTAB in HD then those of us with antennas will be able to watch it. (So technically it will not ONLY be available on Suddenlink).

I guess it is time to give KTAB a call, one would think they would be promoting this big time if it were true.

I am trying not to get my hopes up but dang this would be sweet, even if it is two teams I hate!

of course i'm right!!! did you doubt me joemomma!! j/k

from what i heard on the radio, suddenlink only offereing FOX HD for 1 week, for superbowl only, then i dunno whats gonna happen. but ya, its great, 115.1 on superbowl sunday!
Ok, forgive my ignorance again...how do I pick up 115.1? Right now I'm using my indoor rabbit ears to pick up KRBC, KTXS and KTAB ota. Can I do the same for FOX? Why are the other digitals like 20.1, 24.1 and 29.1 and fox is so high at 115.1? Again, forgive my ignorance...

It will only work if you have Suddenlink...either basic analog or digital (doesn't matter) and a tuner that can get digital through unscrambled QAM. It's not being broadcast over the air....so I guess Suddenlink is right that they have exclusive HD for the Superbowl.

edit- btw, it's not KXVA digital in case we all get too excited....I switched back and forth last night and the commercials were different and the timing of the shows wasn't in sync. Also no KXVA advertising that I saw..

So it is some sort of national Fox feed then or maybe another Fox station from Suddenlink service area. Isn't this illegal according to FCC regulations to broadcast the same programming available on a local Fox station on another station?

Interesting.

I don't know about that...but it seems that some of the advertising is for local companies so that may make it legit. Maybe Suddenlink is paying KXVA a fixed amount to do this for a week and they're still getting ad revenue?
I am not a lawer but I play one on the internet. I would think it would be illegal unless KXVA signed some kind of agreement to allow another FOX feed. It is the same with people here not being able to get a dallas FOX station on sat. without a waver. It was agreed upon by congress many years ago that if you are able to get it over the air you can't get a distant feed. (Off topic) I remember back in the day I could watch just about any station on sat. like a California CBS station or the New York station. I could even watch HBO and certain adult stations free, but I digress.

I have a question for 93geo, I noticed KRBC is running an ad about being ahead with HD. I laughed at first because KTXS has been HD for years but, I have noticed that on digital KRBC/KTAB the picture looks better. Are they planing to be full HD soon ie. local news and syndicated content like Jeopardy?

T-bone, did you stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night?

One of our local members is a lawyer, you might pose the question and see if he responds.
