Abilene, TX - HDTV - Page 17

KRBC changed over its OTA channel designation last night from 9.1 to 29.1. Now my SONY HDTV will not pick up the new channel neither will my Hisense external HD tuner box. Both my SANYO and Olivia HD sets picked up the new channel immediately which was nice. But this is rather frustrating anyone else having any problems with the new channel designation ?
YES!!! I am having the same problem with my Dish ViP 622 HD DVR and I thought it was just me. I am glad to see that it is a station problem rather than DISH's problem. I do a scan in the menu and it picks up the signal just fine at 100% but according to the information KRBC is not sending a remap channel or the Dish box is not picking one up.

There musta been something changed at KRBC last night....I assume that all the problems that they have been happening has caused them to change a piece of equipment and they didn't properly setup the new piece of equipment to remap the digital channel from 29 to 9.1.

I will give them a call and see if I can speak to someone that knows what is happening.
Well I left a voice mail with someone not sure who as it said "Please leave a voice mail for" then a click like someone was hanging up the phone, then a beep. So I told them the problem briefly and left my number so perhaps they will call me back or perhaps they will just fix the problem but hopefully one of those two things will happen as opposed to nothing at all.

Sounds like someone needs to reboot the PSIP computer.

Hi sprint67, I was able to manually set the new channel on the SONY which displays the new channel at 29.3, I've had no luck whatsoever getting the Hisense external HD tuner box to register the new channel. Like you it sees the signal at 97% but can not lock onto nor display any programing.
Looks like they have fixed the problem. Came home from work today and it found the channel no problem.

Well, the latest word is that they are still working toward the goal of flash cutting to digital by the beginning of football season (September). This hinges, of course, on the conditions of all the equipment arriving as scheduled and the availability of the tower and transmitter installation crews to complete the job.

On a good note, though, as soon as they receive their new encoder (in a month or two) they will immediately provide FOX network HD programming to Suddenlink cable over the already-installed direct fiber-optic link. This will allow cable subscribers to view FOX HD before the actual OTA cutover.

Keep the faith. It's coming.

Oh, hell yeah! That last part about feeding digital to Suddenlink before OTA is available is a sweet deal...especially if it happens way sooner than September.

My 2 DirecTV HD receivers found the new KRBC-DT channel without any problem but the quality has been very poor. Every few minutes, the sound will go off or the picture will deteriorate into a jumbled green mess. I had not noticed this problem before.
The green mess has been happening for me probably for the last 2-3 weeks...the audio drops only started earlier this week, Sunday I think (at least that was when I noticed). Then we lost the channel Monday night.

I haven't watched anything on there long enough since that point to know if they are still experiencing problems. I will record Fear Itself tonight so I will know after that how it is doing.

unrelated question,

anyone done a rescan on suddenlink lately? i picked up 80.1 and i think the other was 115.1, both i think were gospel channels(?), could these be placeholders?

When I saw your post I was curious and did a rescan with the internal tuner of my Panasonic plasma...80.1 gave me Chinese (or Japanese??) characters on the screen and some awful music but I don't know if it was religious programming or what...heaven help us (no pun intended) if it ISN'T just a placeholder! I got nothing for 115.1 but the strange thing is that I picked up 94.62 which seems to be an exact copy of KRBC's (channel 5) analog feed. Thankfully 112.1 (KRBC digital) was still there but I still keep on hoping to find KTXS digital so I can ditch my external tuner and rabbit ears..

Engadgethd is reporting that Dish Network will carry the locals in HD this summer and Abilene is in the list. No good for me as I am strictly OTA for network feeds but thought some fellow members would like to read the small post.

Man I am so ready for Dish to add the locals in HD so I can go ahead and call and get another HD receiver in the house and they can repoint my 148 Dish to 61.5 while they are hear and kill two birds with one stone.

August is quickly approaching...anyone have an update on KXVA's digital progress? Also, if anyone has any info about KTXS (ABC) feeding their digital to Suddenlink (or anyone else) that would be great.
not sure about Fox or ABC, however, i have noticed some wierd stuff going on. Suddenlink used to have 80.2 as espn2, thats now gone. 112.1(nbc) is also on 114.1 (same HD nbc, just 2 channels now), and 115.4 is nbc SD. ?!?! not sure what is going on. i wonder if they are just experimenting with all the open channels.

I've been doing quite a few QAM scans lately and noticed the same thing...I really don't know what the purpose of putting an analog/SD feed on a digital channel would be.

Any news on Fox going Digital? And by the way...I'm getting 100% for KTXS now, amazing!

I have received calls and letters from DirecTV telling me that my old model HD Tivo and HD 10-250 receivers are about to become obsolete and that I will have to upgrade my dish and equipment to continue receiving HD. I am not happy about this as everything works great right now and they are not being too generous in handing out the new equipment. I have a multiswitch and diplexer system which runs multiple satelite and OTA cables throughout the house and I am told that the new DirecTV HD signal is not compatible with any multiswitch, meaning I would have to run more cables to each room to get OTA HD signals. For this reason and others, I am thinking of switching to Dish or Suddenlink. I would probably do so right now if either one had HD locals. Any ideas on which is the better choice right now and which will get HD locals (or the rest of them) first?

Suddenlink:
Haven't used them but at least you should get all local SD from them last I checked. You can get NBC and CBS in HD but not ABC or Fox yet. Lowest number of 'cable' HD channels available of the three. I know nothing of their DVR.

DirectTV:
They have the most available 'cable' HD channels at the moment but that changes all the time and Dish Network is close. They have two versions of HD DVR recievers, the most sought after and therefore harder to get is the one with two OTA tuners built into it in addition to two satelite tuners. I believe that it only has the ability to pick up digital OTA signals so since Fox is not digital yet and DirectTV doesn't off local channels even in SD here you'd miss Fox.

DishNetwork:
They have what is widely regarded as the best HD DVR of the providers and nearly as many HD channels as DirectTV. One OTA tuner plus two sat tuners and is supposed to be easier to use than DirectTV's version. The OTA tuner only picks up digital channels (you get a grand total of 5 here now with 3 being in HD) but you can't pick up Fox. However, since DishNetwork offers local SD channels here you can still pick up Fox via satellite. Also, Abilene has been on the list for a while that will be getting HD locals via satellite soon and the signal is up on the satellite right now but not available to subscribers yet. DishNetwork can be a real pain the *** to deal with though and doesn't do a good job taking care if it's customers. As a new customer you'd be eligable for one of their new 'Turbo' packages that I like but as an existing customer, they won't let me have it.
sorry to hear your pain cdharris, that is pretty messed up on DirecTV's part. i am a basic suddenlink person, so i get my HD channels from whatever my QAM picks up. local krbc & ktab are in HD, ktxs (w/ an antenna) is showing full strength in HD, and just THIS morning, while listening to ESPN Radio 1560, the announced said that local FOX is behind schedule for NFL season and will NOT be able to broadcast in HD. so they SUCK!! no cowboys in HD!!! booooooooooooooooooooooooooooo FOX

That makes me want to reconsider DirecTV as I am still getting FOX in HD on an old waiver. I just wish DirecTV was not so hard to deal with. I hate their customer service and their installers never show up when they are supposed to and they don't know what they are doing when they get there. In to old days, I just installed my dish and equipment myself but they will not let you do that anymore.
What you're complaining about is the same with DishNetwork (I think they are the same installers anyway). If you're lucky enough to have a Fox HD waiver then I wouldn't change at all (do you have an actual copy of the letter than can be scanned and altered with a new address just kidding). Also, what you were originally complaining about, forcing you to upgrade equipment, DishNetwork is going through that right now as well. They're getting away from old MPEG2 in favor of MPEG4 because MPEG4 will give the same quality but with less bandwidth so they can offer more channels. However, you need to have a reciever that can decode MPEG4 signals. I'd bet that the minute you get your new reciever you'll see a lot more HD channels than you have now... whether these are channels you'd actually watch is another story.
What tigepilot posted above about Suddenlink, Dish/Direct is true....no matter how much you are willing to spend there is no perfect solution to go with in Abilene Texas. I have Suddenlink but still have to use rabbit ears for KTXS HD......KTXS wants money from Suddenlink as well as Dish/Direct and nobody seems to be caving in any time soon. On the upside, Suddenlink is very reliable and rarely has outages..better than Charter in Fort Worth that I used to have. What mamoji said about KXVA/Fox is disappointing but pretty much what I expected. Now that they're already admitting to missing football season they won't be in any hurry to do the switch before Februrary 09.

Dick

I believe I would stick with Direct TV. At a friends house who has cable, with all the features, I have spent quite a bit of time checking it out and quite frankly in my opinion Direct TV overall is quite a bit better. I have looked into Dish and have a few friends that have it, but again D* seems better overall.

I have HR 20's for the local reception and have had very little trouble with them. Overall my rating of D* with the new equipment would be a b+.

That document was filed in Feb 08, so the Jan date was one they yanked out of ... er, the air. More than likely, I bet they push it to Feb 17, 09 if they even make it by then.
