If hooking up the digital audio to an AVR with HDMI to the TV, make sure you change the settings on the player to output DTS and Dolby. I would assume this is common with all HDMI players, so maybe I am reporting what is common knowledge.
If it detects HDMI, it defaults into PCM on the digital audio out UNLESS YOU CHANGE THE SETTING.
It took me awhile to figure that out last nite because my Elite AVR was not displaying either Dolby or DTS indication on the front panel like on my other player (I had component video thru my AVR). Plus, the sound just wasn't there, especially the sub.
One thing that is frustrating on the player is that it makes you completely stop the DVD to adjust settings. Overall, the fixing the digital out was a borderline nightmare because I knew everything was set up right.
As for the performance of the 85, by the time I got thru fixing the digital out, I didn't have alot of time to fiddle with it. Plus, I used it on a new TV that I haven't messed with either (Mits. 52528). Basically, I plugged them both in at the same time and went at it.
What it did not have were bars on the top and bottom common to the 70. I watched Clapton's OMCOMR and the picture was fine and the audio was better than fine. Much better than my old player (Phillips).
I also watched WOTW on DTS, again audio was great. I did notice some graininess in some scenes, especially lighter backgrounds like skylines, etc.
Like I said, I did not adjust any picture quality settings on the TV or the player (all factory default settings). I will get a chance to experiment tonite.
Somebody upthread said the 85 was big, and yeah it is pretty deep. I was able to set it to the side of my TV stand shelf so it would miss the back panel on the stand, and it fit fine. The Elite was another story.....nothing a drill couldn't fix for the sub/dig. out connections.....
