Is your local news in HD? - Page 57

Catching WWTV/9's 11pm newscast - the studio shots are in SD 4:3, but then during sports, they shrink the 4:3 screen and run full-screen 16:9 graphics - so WWTV has the capability of generating at least 16:9 HD graphics... Not a newscast, but maybe they're getting close?

Local commercials are in 16:9 HD, but not the current newscast. I'll check tomorrow's newscasts to see if it's a one-off or the norm...

• The line for Traverse City, MI in DMA 119 (containing only wpbn) has been removed from the Local Over-the-air HDTV News Stations table.
[edit]
• According to Wikipedia, WTOM is a full-time satellite of WPBN. Therefore the line for Cheboygan, MI in DMA 119 (containing only wtom) has also been removed.

WTOM is indeed a full-time satellite of WPBN. All the network affiliates up there have two stations.

Nope.

Maybe another sub-thread about this show can be started in the parent of this thread, because "It's Academic" 's sister show here in the Cleveland area, "Academic Challenge", went HD last season (except for the cameras above each set of audience bleachers). The show is also recorded digitally (no tape is used). I don't know if the Pittsburgh version of this show, "Hometown High-Q", is in HD.

Is Mac McGarry enjoying the fact that the show is in HD (besides being in its 50th season)?

Does your post count seem a little anemic to you, mbclev? (The solution: two separate replies to the same post, within 5 minutes of each other.)

No, I just thought about it a little later, and that thought is entirely different from that particular post.

You're right. Never mind, I was just joshing.

I forgot to add KOTV also got new graphics, logo and branding just as sister station KWTV. However I am unsure if they are in widescreen SD or HD. Here is a look at their change: http://www.newson6.com/Global/story.asp?S=13381356

EDIT: KOTV is in 16x9 Widescreen SD.

A post over at the Sioux City, IA/Sioux Falls, SD thread in the Local HDTV Info and Reception forum mentions that KMEG (CBS) and KPTH (Fox) in Sioux City now have 16:9 widescreen news and that KLKN (ABC) in Lincoln, NE is beginning HD news today. An article in the Lincoln Journal Star substantiates the claim about KLKN's news.

I've just found that KWQC, the NBC affiliate for the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa, went HD with their local news on Wednesday because I found on the Davenport, IA HDTV thread that someone was wondering about that.

From KWQC's web site:

http://www.kwqc.com/Global/story.asp?S=13399823

This is the first station owned by Young Broadcasting with local news in HD (though KWQC is operated by Gray TV for Young).

The NBC Affiliate in Lancaster has just spruced up their studio with new w/s Plasma screens, etc. At this moment are still broadcasting in SD. It's hard to tell if the graphics on the set have upgraded to HD or not.

Look for them to make the switch to HD soon, hard to imagine they'd go to all this trouble to remain SD. It's about time, back in the day, they were one of the first local PA stations to go Stereo broadcasting, but the whole Harrisburg / York / Lancaster DMA has been painfully slow to upgrade local news to HD. WGAL will most likely be the first ... Stay Tuned!
The HD master control> $60K
The HD production switcher> $300K
HD Studio Cameras> $200K
HD Graphics> $80K

Plasma Monitors> $14K

Sounds like a spruce up and not necessarily a full blown rebuild to me...

Anybody want to make any guesses (or take under the table bets ) on what station will be the LAST to go HD (or at least 16:9 widescreen)?

My take would be my local NBC station in San Diego, KNSD, which is a network O&O. Heck, the local control for it is in LA, from the KNBC facilities, which is why there's no local weather guy and Fritz Coleman does it via remote.

WWOR, the MNTV O&O in Secaucus, NJ, servicing the NY metro area. They only do 2.5 hours of news a week and there have been no reports of any movement towards news in HD on that station in well over a year. If NewsCorp had gotten their way, the station would've been absorbed into WNYW, just like KCOP in LA was absorbed into KTTV.

Ironically, WQAD had been boasting that they'd be first in HD for the market:

I've just found on Wikipedia that WRDW-TV, the CBS affiliate in Augusta, GA, started doing 16:9 SD widescreen news on August 17.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRDW-TV

I've also found that Jackson, MS NBC affiliate WLBT started doing HD local news on October 30.
