Brain Dump and Update Thread for the DIY Screen FAQ/Reference Sticky

Thread Starter
To those who have DIY questions you want answered: please post them in a separate thread.

As many of us know, the DIY Screen FAQ/Reference sticky that was so adeptly provided by member gambit is in need of updating.

Gambit already has requested that members forward their requested updates to him. So, if that is your preference, please do so. The purpose of this thread is to augment any individual's efforts to update the sticky, as gambit has requested.

-----------------------------------------------

That said, let's use this thread to post useful and updated information. Members are welcome to discuss, refine, dismiss, or suggest what is posted to gambit for updating.

Let's see what a group effort can accomplish.

Actually, having this thread is a great idea. Toss in all the ideas that you feel are relevant here and I'll scan thru and update them to the sticky along with stuff that people send me directly.

As I had mentioned in the sticky, the request has already been made to the mods to clean up and lock out the sticky, which they'll be doing when they get the time. I've made updates to some of the older formulas that people have already notified me that needed updating.

Now, it's just a matter of putting in more recent content that people feel would be valuable for reference. And I'm not going to judge whether something is good or bad to determine whether it should go in. If something had generated a fair amount of interest, then it should probably appear in the sticky so that new members can reference it and make their own informed opinion about whether they want to try it out as well.

Just to let everyone know, the DIY Screen FAQ sticky thread has been restarted and all the reply posts cluttering it have been stripped out. Unfortunately, when it was locked, only admins/mods could edit it. So there was no way for me to update it at all. So now it is unlocked again and we have to leave it up to everyone to avoid posting replies to it, no matter how tempting that may be

We'll see how that goes, whether it can be kept under control or end up like before.

If anyone thinks something should be in there that isn't there now, please forward me the info. Or if there is any information that is outdated, let me know as well. Thanks.

Gambit-
I think you should list Polywall's cousin, Durotherm as well in the Basic Screens (Matte White) section.
Available at Menard's only. Menard's SKU #: 5072700, PP's UPC #:637553000937. $30.00.

OK, I added the update. Thanks.

How about posting a link to this thread near the top of the sticky?

Please correct the formula per quart for "Bombadil Gray" to (0 4 0) lamp black and (0 2 0) raw umber. Also, please add the formula per quart for "Bombadil Gray Lite" as (0 3 0) lamp black and (0 1 0) raw umber. Thanks

I'll send Tom_Bombadil a note to get clarification. I looked at his last thread and see the formula you are referring to. However, I had updated the formula in the FAQ based on Tom's response in the original sticky of what he felt the correction should have been. I'll try and get it sorted out.

Here's a link showing the original thread, if needed, 4th post down.

I tried to send him a note, but his PM is off. I'll just go with the formula in the thread you referenced for now.

I've read through so many of these threads now and the one universal thing missing is pictures. It would be nice if we could get some pictures of the stock materials in the FAQ.

Personally, I'm having trouble weighing options and selecting a technique for attaching my screen material to my frame. Since there are many screen and frame combinations, a concise enumeration of the various techniques - stapling, velcroing, splining, gluing, etc. - would be very helpful; i.e. pros, cons, tradeoffs, etc.

Thanks.

It would be nice to add the Wilsonart laminate panels to the FAQ (especially because they can be ordered in sizes larger than 4x8). For more info, see this thread:

Thought you should add a link in the stick DIY FAQ thread about the Wilson Art DW.

Reference the laminate WilsonArt Designer White laminate sheet color 354-60 that is being refered to as DW. Free 2 x3 samples can be requested from the manufacturer. www.wilsonart.com

Wilson Art Designer White Laminate is available at most Home Depot as a special order material and comes instandard sizes of 4x8 5x8 5x10 5x12. Optical qualities similar to Do-able.

Main laminate thread (mentions DW starting at around post #34)

Terrific Sticky!

This is my first experience into projectors and I'm on the hunt for a DIY screen. I feel confident that this Sticky will get me headed in the right direction.

I did find one link that appears dead.

The 5th link in the "Hardboard Screen Building Examples" points to a threadid=406441 which appears to be dead.

Keep up the great work!

I would also like to change the name of the beginner's guide from "Painted DIY Screen beginner's Guide" to "Beginner's Guide to DIY Screens". While the majority of the information is presented with painting in mind the inclusion of a couple of additional chapters for non-painted solutions would make it more generally useful. A lot of the information regarding white vs gray and various sheens etc is universally relevant too.

Todd: I changed the title. Looks good on top, really - and we haven't had much for rule problems, so I think the order is fine for now. Might help to delete the poll, I think it is universally agreed that this guide is useful. Good work!

Hello Bambit,
I noticed a couple of dead end links on the DIY screen Faq page:

1. Under the Masking section, the first two links seem to go nowhere. The thirs goes on site t- Webshots site, but coulf only view tiny ocas, large ones never loaded (maybe because I'm on dialup)

2. The cloth on aluminum link seems dead as well, would love to have read that one.

3. Under Hardboards, the 4th link seems to be dead.

Gambit, I have enjoyed looking at your frame & masking info & wondered if you have any more photos that weren't posted? I have a few questions about your project;

1. I see the pulleys at the bottom of each vertical, but don't see any on top, were there pulleys at the top also ?

2. I'm dumb, don't understand how the mask system works, did you use a roller shade drum at the top & bottom ?

3. How is the top guide wire placed over the screen, directly over top or at the leading edge and is height above the screen critical ? Is there a turnbuckle ther to keep it taut ?

4. Are there any photos of the masks resting in their pockets to see how that looks (tough imagining that without seeing it) ?
Sorry, for so many questions ?

Hey everyone, I've done a refresh of the DIY Screen FAQ sticky thread. All the links should be active. I have added new content to reflect newer formulas and discussions.

If you are a veteran of the forum and think I've left out some important info, let me know and I can look to add it in.

If you are a newbie to the forum and you don't feel the sticky is helpful enough, let me know it's shortcomings.

Enjoy!

gambit;
Thx for putting together the DIY screen FAQ thread

Great resource.

Can you add to the masking paragraph some of the recent manual masking methods?
I nominate this by "docprego":
