LCD TV Lift (drop down from Ceiling)

Hi, I've checked the forums, haven't found anything useful. Just wanted to get some advice on building something that will allow my tv to lower from the ceiling in my bedroom (from the attic).

I was thinking a linear actuator...any thoughts?

Things to keep in mind:
Cost is always an issue
the tv has not been purchased, but I was thinking either 27 30 or 32. The actuator specs would obviously need to be able to handle the tv specs (goes without saying).

Just want to get people ideas, or success stories...maybe pics??? Thanks a bunch

Hi,

I have no idea on what to use, but I was wondering where you're located because here in Canada, attic's are "cold zones". Not an ideal place to have a TV when it's not in use. You would probably have to build some sort of insulated enclosure for it in the attic. Just my thoughts though.

you're right, I'm actually in california, and the cold is not so bad...it's the summers that I'm worried about. I thought about it and I would have to create an insulated box that would house the entire unit in the attic. I'm thinking of placing a decorative steel grate directly under the tv (where it will rest) that will allow some house air circulation to enter.

Anyone else successfully built something like this? Anyone use linear actuators on a tv lift (not necessarily from the ceiling)?

I'd bump but it's already at the top...

C'mon people...any engineers out there that would drop some knowledge on me, or savvy diy'ers?
I'll post a pic of a diagram I pulled from another site...if anything it will give motivation for others to maybe build this, as it seems to be, an easy enough ceiling mod

Here's a diagram...very basic.

You can build this from stuff you can buy at a hardware store save the linear actuator...anyone know a good (translates to cheap) place to buy one? other than ebay that is...

Auton lifts are the usual solution - but $$$ Search for "auton" across all forums here; I got many hits. Those threads also discuss cheaper options...

Checked it out, the alternatives I found were rigging a garage door opener...Anyone do this and have it work?

Cost wise, I'm still leaning towards a linear actuator but am still not sold that it would work the way I would expect it to.

Anyone have any pics of things they've done or other suggestions...I've checked the forum but have not had any luck...

The summerlift cable lift (http://www.summerlift.com) solution looks kind of cool. I am trying to do something similar with a DLP that will drop into an existing built-in cabinet.

I thought there was someone on this Forum that had a Setup that used a "Garage Door" Lift system to lower a Plasma down from the Ceiling?

Never mind..... I did a Search and found it was a Lift to come up thru a Fireplace!

You could easily use a linear actuator.. I'd hate to hear what a garage door opener sounds like as you try to lower a TV.

Do a Google search for linear actuators and FirgelliAuto (dot) com is the first site that comes up, and you can get a remote to control it if you don't want to wire up a switch.

ps. If I were doing the project, I'd definitely build an insulated enclosure.. I'd hate to have my TV freeze when I want to catch the new episode of Lost. : - )

Hello I´ve been a long time in the TV Lift business and cabinet manufacturing.
I´ve had a lot of diffrent TV Lift Systems built in, including the USA imported china stuff. Both popup and ceiling systems.

The latest brand we used was fron good old germany. They are called Flatlift. They have very good TV lift stuff. Also Mr. Rissel (MD) and Mr. Greim are absolutely specialists. They have a lot of diffrent systems in stock. If you need a custom made piece of tv lift then they can also built it. I have visited them in Worms/ Germany. They have a automatic trumpf laser cutting machine and their own powder coating station. They also could weld with WIG Systems very professional. Flatlift also offers special trainings for building in their products. All in one i could say they have a very good service and they have very short delivery times. Their popup Tv Lift systems are unreachable. Quiet and very smooth and also programmable by laptop with a special tv lift software.

Their prices start at 799 Euro and when you are a retailer then you will get discounts as well.

If anyone has a special questions about tv lifts please reply.

Don´t use a garage door opener. Use a TV Lift system that is made from a professional. If something happen you can always call them. If you made a mistake by building it on your own then you may have broken fingers at least!
