The "Official" Denon AVR-2807 Thread - Page 48

Does anyone know whether there is an incompatibility between cable boxes (in my case it would be the Scientific Atlanta DVR 8300HD) and the Denon AVR-2807 when using HDMI between the cable box and the receiver and between the receiver and the TV? I would much prefer not to have to use components and separate audio from the DVR to the receiver. I have heard that HDMI 1.0 may not be compatible with HDMI 1.1 and that HDCP messes up everything. I am thinking about getting a Denon AVR-2807, and this has me concerned.

TIA for any info.

i really like the way this receiver looks (not the actual look, you know what i mean!).

I'm contemplating between this one and the cheaper 2307CI. Is it worth the extra $300 for the 2807?

What am I getting for the extra $300? Thanks!!

PS - after I looked at Amazon (I have a $200 gift certificate there) So I can get the 2307CI for $460.13 shipped or the 2807 for $821.49 shipped.

So the difference in price is really $361.36. Anyone have any opinions on if the 2807 is really worth an extra $360! Thanks!!

Does anyone know how to receive an HDMI input (video) and output it over Component?

Is this even possible with this receiver?
Thanks everyone for the replies about bi-wiring. I'm always looking for ways to make my setup sound better...

Not possible with any receiver. If it comes in over HDMI then it must also leave over HDMI or the content protection would be lost.

There's at least one thread right now actively debating this in the receiver forum. The 2807 adds Audyssey RoomEQ, "Pure Analog" signal paths, AL24+ processing on the front L/R channels, more inputs, and more outputs. It also deinterlaces 480i video to 480p. Whether or not it's worth it is entirely your call. Some will say yes; some will say no. What's more important to you? The most economical home theatre setup or the best possible sound?

I've been having a Denon 2807 now for about a week and I must say I am very happy with my purchase. Since I've got it, I've kind of become a movie nut. I've been watching Star Wars, Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, etc. just so I can hear the effects of the bullets wizzing by your head and the spaceships zooming on top of you. I using the Definitive BP7006 for my speakers. Setup was a little difficult but once I figured it out it wasn't that hard. In fact, I ended up having to move my unhook the reciever and move it and was able to hook it up again with no problems.

Save the amazon bucks for a remote and buy the 987(same as the 2807) from j and r dot com(authorized denon seller) for less than the price after your amazon $200 off...

I am regretfully investigating replacing my wonderful Outlaw 990 preamp/processor with the Denon AVR-2807 because I cannot switch two multi-channel surround sound sources with the Outlaw (it doesn't have HDMI inputs and only one set of 7.1 channel analog inputs).

I've been reading through this thread and have a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can answer:
  • It looks like the AVR-2807 is HDMI 1.2, which means that it should accept PCM over HDMI (which is necessary for my two high-def disc players to be able to decode advanced audio codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD and send them to the AVR as PCM over HDMI). Could someone please confirm that this setup actually works?
  • Awhile back in this thread someone asked if 7.1 channels of PCM over HDMI worked. Was this ever confirmed?
  • I want to run the AVR-2807 strictly as a preamp. I'm pretty sure that the AVR-2807 can be configured to send the 0.1 subwoofer output without any internal amplification, but can this unit be set up to completely bypass its internal amplification and send the remaining 7.0 channel outputs to my amplifier via the pre-outs?
  • I already have a video processor and do not want the AVR-2807 to do any video processing on the video signal coming into the HDMI inputs. Can the AVR-2807 be set to bypass video processing?
Thanks!

I think the AVR 2807 does HDMI version 1.1. You might want to get someone to clarify this but I just bought a 2807 and in my reasearch I did I thought it only did HDMI 1.1

2807 is HDMI 1.1, and doesn't have DTS-HD nor Dolby True HD decoder/decopressor, I doubt It will ever accept them (as bitstream). On another hand, Advance mode authoring prevent direct Bitstream out, and so player decompress them and send PCM over HDMI, so not an issue.

Yes, it did works, tested using PS3, no problem.

Yes, no problem here again, 7.1 pre-out are there.

Yes, you can by-pass any processing, especially as there is none (on 720p / 1080i/p signal).

BTW, I love my 2807

You're right, it's HDMI 1.1 (I was confusing it with the Pioneer VSX-82txs, which is HDMI 1.2). But that's OK... as long as it's at least HDMI 1.1 it should work (and apparently it works well for you, Patrice!).

Since I already own a custom-programmable universal remote, I could care less about the remote that comes with the AVR-2807. It sounds like I would be better off saving some money and buying the AVR-987 which (except for the remote) is identical to the AVR-2807... correct? Thanks!

correct! and i bought the avr-987 from jr dot com for $799 - though i think they are presently out of stock...but you should check anyway...

Scott,
I just did the exact same thing your thinking of. I sold my 990 (just shipped it out today) and went and picked up a 2807 from Magnolia!!! How weird is that! For the exact same reasons as well. I have a PS3 and HD-A1 and I wanted to get the LPCM from the PS3. BTW, I was able to talk Magnolia down to within 50 bucks of the J and R price, plus tax of course. I'll post my impressions as soon as I get it fired up this evening. I have a fellow AVSer coming over to help get everything up and running. Kept my 7125 amp and will only use the 2807 as a pre/pro.

Off to crack open the box!!!!
Yeah, it is unfortunately looking like I will be doing the same thing. I say unfortunately because the Outlaw 990 is a terrific preamp. If it magically sprouted a set of HDMI in/outs to replace the DVI plugs I wouldn't even consider selling it (I haven't even had it for a year yet!). Tonight I'm auditioning three different component video switchers for use as 5.1 surround sound switchers. If that doesn't work, I'm afraid the 990 goes on the auction block.

Ahhh, no option for me as the PS3 is HDMI only for HD audio....
Bad news. My "science experiments" with using component video switchers for switching 5.1 surround sound were all failures. Every switch I tested degraded the signal strength to some degree or other, which in my book is unacceptable. Looks like I'm going to become a new Denon AVR owner (and sadly, a former Outlaw 990 owner).

I saw refurbished 2307CI on amazon for $490 plus $40 shipping.
What is source for $430?

Success! Sort of... Audyssey turned my LFE down WAY too low for my tastes, but once I cranked it back up. I was in business. I think I actually like the sound a bit better than the Outlaw. I'm sure the Audyssey has something to do with it, but I'm hearing sounds on regular DVD's I never heard before. It's sooo nice to see the 7.1 multi-channel in light up on the display. Uncompressed LPCM is unreal! The bonus was feeding my HD Dish box via component and having the 2807 transcode the component to HDMI, to my eyes it looks just as good as the HDMI feed.

I'm super stoked with the 2807. But you can be sure Denon will release all the new models soon now that I have plunked down the cash for the 2807!

(Disclaimer: I am using an external 7 channel Outlaw amp, your results may vary)

Hey guys,

I'm picking up my 2807 this sat. along with a set of Klipsch RF-82's and a RW-12d. I was seriously considering the Pio 82TXS but I was able to get this one price match at Crutchfields price so I'm getting it. I know they consider the Pio a "level 6" reciever but my question is what level is this reciever considered. Oh, and yes I do plan on getting more speakers to bring it up to a full 7.1 system, this is just the first step toward that goal. Thanks

I can also report success with this unit using both HD-DVD and Blu-ray (Toshiba HD-XA2 and Panasonic DMP-BD10).

I still miss my Outlaw 990, but the AVR-2807 definitely works as advertised with ONE hiccup--no matter what settings I apply to the 12 volt trigger functions, I cannot get Trigger #1 to turn on my Outlaw 7700 amplifier. Adam, I know you have the same amp... can you check your settings and tell me how you were able to get this to work?
I am hoping that they release a 3807 by the time I am ready to buy. I may just go with the 2807 instead.

I didn't have any issues with the trigger. I went into the setup and assigned all the different inputs to Trigger 1. Once I did that and backed out of the menu, the amp turned on.

I hope this doesn't come off as a stupid question but are you saying you have your amp plugged directly into your receiver? If so, do you just leave the amp on all the time and it will turn off when the receiver does?

I have my amp plugged into my surge protector with the rest of my equipment but it is a pain to have to turn it on/off manually every time I use my system, is it 'safe' to plug it into my receiver? Is there a way to set a delay so that it turns on a few seconds after my receiver does to reduce the load?

Thanks in advance

The Outlaw 7700 is a "hog". I seriously doubt that it could be directly plugged into the Dennon. I ended up putting my Outlaw amp on a dedicated circuit.

The Denon 2807 has a 12 volt output/trigger. The Outlaw has 12 volt input/trigger. You run a cable between them and the Denon should turn on the Outlaw when it turns on.
rlb is right. The Outlaw 7700 is a 200 watt per channel amplifier. I actually had a dedicated 20 amp circuit installed in my theater and the 7700 is the only thing plugged into that circuit.

I'm not terribly concerned about trigger #1 not working, though it annoys me that a brand-new AVR already has something broken or not working on it.
Scott,

I'm also thinking about buying the 2807 so that I can enjoy the sound from Blu Ray Discs (using a PS3).

I would also be replacing the Outlaw pre amp (it's the older 950), and retaining my Outlaw amp for use with the 2807.

How do you like the sound of the 2807 versus the Outlaw for music (CDs), and DD 5.1 or PLII from your cable/satellite receiver?
i too have switched from an Outlaw 990 to the Denon 2807. while i am enjoying the digital connections between it and the toshiba hd-a1 and sony ps3, i have noticed a significant decrease in sound quality for music compared to the Outlaw. would be interested to hear your thoughts...
