The umbrella is because she's a vampire.

Can someone remind me how long before the season ended they knew they'd have a season after this one?

They agreed to Season 9 in late December, 2012:

Report: How I Met Your Mother Renewed for 9th Season After Jason Segel's 11th-Hour Reversal

They weren't originally going to do one but CBS begged them to make a season 9 (and of course threw the requisite bags of cash at the cast.)

She has a good singing voice. Nice video here if you can excuse the guy's "orgasm face" while singing, a forest of mic stands and an uber-attractive violinist....

So she maybe also singing in the wedding and playing her bass, I bet this will make Ted very interested..

I'm afraid they will drag the wedding for a few episodes, maybe even mid-season end and only have 1/2 season to know the mother..
Which may be preferable, since who knows how folks will react to her? They get decent ratings for 1/2 the season with both factions, then lose 1/2 the audience to a love/hate split with the mother. Before, folks had some hope that the current girl was not going to be "her", this time they know in advance that she is. The knives will come out in short order...

Wonder if there are odds being calculated and bets taken for her "approval rating"?

I wouldn't really consider that a spoiler, because it doesn't reveal anything we don't already know. We've met the Mother, we've got confirmation that it's her, so we expect the next 24 episodes to include the mother in some way.
New catch phrase It's gonna be -Legen, wait for it " how everybody else met your Mother before Uncle Barney and Aunty Robin's wedding for the whole season then finaly I meet her at the end" dary
post #1002 of 1167
Or rename the show "How Barney ended up with Robin"
How about "How I Met Your Father"

The kids seem to be getting a little impatient too...

So according to the Comic-con panel they will be going back and forwards in time for a bit, while the wedding may take the whole season

I want my Cobbie Smulders fix please.. (this was perhaps the last time we get to meet her on Comic-con unless she does more Avengers movies

I just read a couple days ago that she's been signed to appear in the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. show, at least periodically.

Wow double dose of Smulders in the Fall! I can't wait!

Her uniform looks a lot like the one in The Avengers..

Finally subscribed to this thread and plan to read all posts from #1 on before the season premiere.

One general comment: I'm so glad they concluded the Zoey Pierson arc before introducing Quinn Garvey.  I have prosopagnosia, and Jennifer Morrison and Becki Newton are indistinguishable to me.  It would have been annoying as hell if the two characters had overlapped and every time I saw one I'd had to wonder "Is that Morrison as Zoey or is it Newton as Quinn?"

(If they stood next to each other both barefoot, or known to be in equal heels, that might help.  I think Morrison is taller than Newton.)

But now the new problem: telling Cristin Milioti from Alyson Hannigan without waiting for the actress to speak.
Well we had a heavy dose of Milioti-Hannigan last night, she looks like her but younger and thinner and shows Alyson has aged those 8 years unlike the rest of the cast, is she the oldest one?

"somebitches"
So Milioti's character has no name?  Is it going to be that way all season?  If so, it's entirely coy and gratuitous, and we'll be subjected to circumlocutions and contrived syntaxes all season just to avoid stating a name.

Even Sherri Shepherd's character was given a name, or at least a first name (it's Daphne).  The desk clerk and the bartender were Curtis and Linus.  But a principal, whose performer gets start-of-the-show billing and whose character is mentioned in the title, is Ms. Mystery Anonymous.
Nope, just nicknames, that I could remember "The Mother" "Mom" "Yellow Umbrella" among others, we could add "The Somebitches cookie girl"

There have been many nameless characters in media, and it works more often than not without the viewer realizing it. Off the top of my head:

The man with no name trilogy (Fistful of Dollars, etc)
Ari Gold's wife, Entourage
Main character from Layer Cake (Daniel Craig)
Edward Norton in Fight Club

No question, sometimes it works.  This, in my opinion, isn't such a time.

In a series that prides itself on continuity and consistency (though of course it's imperfect, starting with the pilot, where the kids needed to be told at the end of the episode that the news reporter their father fell for in 2005 was the woman they now know as "Aunt Robin" and not their mother), surely the kids know their mother's first and maiden names, and it makes no sense to dance around ever mentioning them in front of her own children.  Let's wait to see how much contrivance and contortion the scripts will need to avoid giving her a name, or if maybe she does get a name after all.  ("Mrs. Theodore Mosby" doesn't count.)

Don't forget HRG from Heroes, he did lasted a couple of seasons w/o knowing his name
post #1016 of 1167
I sure hope that keeping the mother's name secret for the whole season doesn't become the dominant theme for the remaining episodes of this show.
That will get tedious & boring real quick...
Why is it so important to name the Mother character? To the kids, she's Mom. I don't refer to my wife by her name when I'm talking to my kids: "Go ask your mother!"

You've gone through the entire life of this series not knowing who the Mother is, so it makes some sense that the creators would continue some mystery even after the person is revealed. Let them have their fun. Maybe they're saving it for the last episode.
I just hope is not a sad ending.. like "kids let's go to the cemetery to visit your Mother's grave" and then see her name there

Maybe it isn't.  What's important is that, if they decide not to name her, not to be clumsy and contrived about avoiding mentions of her by name.

I can think of quite a few television characters over my decades as a viewer who were main cast characters on their shows but who had no names, or just first names with no surnames; sometimes it's handled well, sometimes very awkwardly.

Of course, a name for her would make it easier for us and other fans to discuss the show among each other this season, but that's not going to be a factor for the producers or the writers.  So we'll see how they do it.

Not all scenes on HIMYM are just Ted and the kids.  Lily wouldn't have been calling her Mom during the train ride.

I was addressing this statement: " surely the kids know their mother's first and maiden names, and it makes no sense to dance around ever mentioning them in front of her own children."

But, as you say, if the writers plan to keep the name a mystery, hopefully they don't throw outlandish and outrageous contrivances to avoid mentioning it.
