That's weird. You have to wonder if they stopped manufacturing that particular bundle or if demand was just that high?

It's available as Best Buy's website for shipping and pick-up. I'm thinking SonyStyle has solid demand and their warehouses are simply supply-constrained. Funny.

I wonder if there has been a surge in demand with HD DVD going under? It likely takes months to react to an increase in demand.

I have no doubts that demand has increased but we can only speculate as to what the level of increase actually is. I fully expect the PS3 to once again outsell the 360 for the month of February, but this time in larger quantities with the different attributed in large part to Blu-ray winning the format war.

Next months figures will be interesting.

There has been a surge in PS3 questions, it seems.

Still see both varieties of 40GB at retail. Looks like the Spidey3 bundle is slowly thinning, though. Can't wait for a new higher end SKU that has BC/SACD, etc. Hopefully we'll see satin silver in the US... Otherwise, I might have to import a Japanese one (if they had card readers, BC, etc I'd already have it).

I agree, sales figures should be quite interesting for Feb. Not that games aren't great now, but if game companies would just start developing games for the PS3 that fully take advantage of the Cell and everything else the PS3 has to offer I think the PS3 could end up equaling the PS2 in terms of popularity. There's really no excuse for simple ports from other platforms, not anymore.

Well clearly the demand for BD players in general should increase, but how much of that increase will be directed to the PS3 seems to be hard to estimate. As I see it, I don't think many consumers will see the PS3 as a viable BD player (mostly only gamers and more sophisticated A/V enthusiasts) until SONY can make it more user friendly by packaging a regular remote with it, including a detailed, easy to follow, printed manual, repositioning the advertising, etc.

I think however, that the PS3 demand will increase as a game platform as more and more software, and more sophisticated software hits the shelves, but as you suggest, this will be a bit further down the road. We also have consumers already pulling back with their spending given the current and predicted downturn in the economy, so all BD player mfrs may not see the bump they were hoping for.

Actually, I personally see the PS3 as one of the best kept secrets in home A/V. I don't like to play Monday morning quarterback, but I do think that SONY needs to rethink their overall marketing strategy for the PS3 in terms of the suggestions I made above, and by completely revamping their advertising and positioning strategy.

To wit, I'm pretty much in the know, but I honestly had no idea of the range and depth of capabilities of the PS3 until I got it home and had it in my system for several weeks. Thank goodness I have a son who did and convinced me to buy it even though I was quie reluctant.

Good point. Sony could greatly increase BD adoption if they came out with a new PS3 bundle, one that had a new blockbuster movie and the BD remote for $399 or even less. It's almost unfortunate that this machine does so many things so well because it makes it difficult to market to one specific demographic, outside of gaming that is. It's probably the best BD player out right now, but how many times have you heard "I don't want a gaming machine as my BD player?" The marketing for something like this is tricky and can go wrong in so many ways.

Sony should go back to making "full featured" PS3s, improve quaulity contol, better manage their supply chain, revamp their return policy and better staff customer support and service.

I'm not the only one who brought home a box of headaches with their first PS3 and the average BD viewer isn't going to put up with the problems I had if they hear of them ahead of time. The first month of ownership was a nightmare. I realize that these problems are a small minorty but they get most of the ink and that will continue to scare away many that are just looking to replace a DVD player or who might be averse to computers and technology in general.

I'm glad I went ahead and picked up my PS3 this week. I was going to wait and get it at Best Buy but Walmart is one of the only places selling the PS3 + Spiderman 3 bundle still, as Sony has already officially said that they have stopped making those bundles. As a whole, the PS3 package seems very good - build quality, interface, tweaking options, etc. make my 360 seem rather cheap. It's nice to have both systems though, as I can use the 360 strictly for gaming (who knows when it will break anyway ) and the PS3 for BD and as a media center of sorts.

Slightly off-topic, has anyone experienced this "Disc reading" issue that I am seeing 40gb owners complaining about around the web?
I have to admit i was against getting a ps3 as a sole BR player but now after reading I think it's the best choice... it is still right? It can be upgraded to a 2.0 player with firmware?

And will the 40gb bundle with spiderman be a good choice?

Yes ,everything seems to be set for upscaling, double checked to make sure. Per advice from a former respondent I slipped in another sd-dvd (The Illusionist) last night and the pq was adequate "at best".
I guess I'll have to wait for the new Oppo and give it a spin... By the way ,my display is a 60 inch Pio plasma,if the size of the screen is relevant or not,I don't know...

Oh,I love what the ps3 does for BD though

What kind of picture do you get if you turn off Upscaling at the PS3, and let the display to the upscaling?

You're using HDMI? Dispay is 768 lines?

Viewing distance?

Color of viewing room wallpaper?

With what's happening these days, you might be able to pick up an XA2 for about the same price. It really does a stellar job of upconverting SD DVDs

When is Q2?? When I talked to Sony today, they had no expected date for the release for ANY PS3s...but they said they would be the first ones to dispense them. Some guy took my name and info and said he would call me as soon as they get some in. He said the demand has been huge.... especially the last few days.

I want to wait, but I REALLY REALLY wanted to get my PS3 before Easter!! I hate to pout like a kid, but mommy I want one now!
I was in my local Blockbuster a couple of days ago, and they had at least 4 PS3 bundles. 80GB version, Motorstorm and Surf's Up games, and a remote control (in addition to the game controller) for $499 (I think... I didn't pay attention to the price as you all can see). It might be worth stopping by and check it out.

That's EXACTY the bundle that Circuit City offered earlier this month: the 40Gig PS3 with Spiderman3 inside and the remote for $399.

Which was exactly my viewpoint till:
  • The realization that the lowest price "pure" BD player was the same price.
  • A friend (a retired HP exec.) had just purchased one and brought it over to try on my Sony 55A3000 (SXRD). He pointed out the "extras" that the PS3 offered:
    • Internal storage
    • Network connections - connects to Media Center for images (I now have a 55" Digital Photo Frame), and music.

The major reason that I STILL MAINTAIN that the demise of HD DVD contributed to the shortage of PS3s is that much of the press about the demise did attribute the PS3 as a major reason that Sony was successful. This brought the capability of the PS3 to the attention of anyone interested i these wars.

It really doesn't take much of a increase in demand to create shortages (Marketing Professor - you should know that).

The PS3 provides great value for techno geeks who may/may not be gamers, but really the mass market is looking for $100 unit that will play HD movies. Until then they will be happy with regular DVD and I don't see the PS3 ever being the mass market player. We have two in our house and I am very happy with them, but I play games a couple of times a week and watch movies a couple of times a week and since it does both well it works for me.

size of screen shouldn't matter, I have a 58" panny, and the PS3 does a great job at upscaling. As suggested, try turning off the upscaling feature, see how it looks, and then turn it back on. There should be a dramatic difference. If not, perhaps some setting isn't on.

I was able to see this last night, even on a DVD that I had burned. After seeing what a Sony upconverting DVD player did with my SD DVD's, the PS3 is quite a bit better and I noticed the difference right away.

I just want to make sure I understand how to make PS3 stop upconverting and sent native source resolution to my Integra processor: under Display settings, where I set TV resolutions, I have to check all of them? This way PS3 will send signal as it reads from the sourse (480p (or is it 480i?) from SD DVDs, 1080P from BR etc)? DId I get this right? I want to use my Integra Reon upscaler instead of PS3 one. Connected with HDMI.

I think you can just turn upscaling off in the BD/DVD settings. Not sure if you have to disable 480p or not to get it to output straight 480i (or as the PS3 dubs it "NTSC").
