I've got a quick question. And yes, I've done my research, but I can't seem to find an exact answer to my question.

I recently bought a kds-55a3000 1080p television, the onkyo sr800 home theater in a box, and plan to purchase a ps3.

I know that I cannot get true HD audio through the sr800 receiver because it cannot decode HD audio signals. In order to get audio, I'll have to run an optical cable from the ps3 to the sr800, and only then I will have Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound.

But here's my question: What if I play a new Blu Ray movie, such as 30 Days of Night, that only has TrueHD Audio? Will the audio be downconverted to 5.1 Dolby Surround with my optical cable to sr800 setup, or will I not hear anything at all

Are the new audio HD formats backwards compatible?

Thanks,
Paul

All Blu-Ray disks must have a base audio track on them (DD, DTS, or PCM). Many Blu-Ray disks hide the base DD track when they have a True-HD track. However, if you select the True-HD track and your system can't support it, it will automatically use the hidden DD 5.1 track.

The PS3's that the Air Force wants to buy will be used for the dormitories of the single airman on base. When I was in the Air Force each building had a day room with a large tv, cable, and a vcr. Just before I got out in 2001, my shop had fabricated AV racks for the dormitories on my base, for the squadrons had purchased dvd players, surround sound, and cd players.

The Air Force always invests its funds on the quality of life for its members. This is what it will probably be used for.

The PS3 will definately see a spike in sales now that the format war is over. It will sell very well for its blu ray capabilities ultimately and not its gaming. Unless of course Microsoft offers a blu ray drive for the Xbox 360 which is unlikely but still a possibility. That may steal some of PS3's thunder. What cracks me up is alot of blu ray titles are available on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

I have had my PS3 now for almost 2 months and it performs flawlessly. A great blu ray machine. Can't wait for some new updates.

How can I watch a 720P x264 file in DTS on PS3? I do have tversity, but I assume it does not do DTS? How can I transfer 4-5GB data to ps3 hard drive? and if DTS would play back?

"The Air Force Research Laboratory is conducting a technology assessment of certain cell processors. The processors in the Sony PlayStation 3 are the only brand on the market that utilizes the specific cell processor characteristics needed for this program at an acceptable cost."

Whacky that it's cheaper to buy an entire PS3 than to try to source the processors as parts.

So we really are paying less than we should or could and or Sony really is taking a loss.

select the file in media server (DNLA - tversity) hit the green triangle (option) select copy file.

I am aware that this issue has been covered 1M times and have read the postings and have set up my BD to bitstream, using HDMI for Video and Optical for audio and yet getting no sound at all, have checked the cables and they are connected right, what could the cause be?

This is getting me frustrated and embarrassed on top of it all.

"I'm using optical out instead of HDMI for audio. How should I set my audio output settings, PCM or Bitstream?
Set it to Bitstream."

Been a looong time since I last posted anywhere on AVS..
I was looking over this forum, and I couldn't find/missed anything explaining why Sony is no longer manufacturing 80GB ps3's. Does anyone know? Only the 40GB model is available from Sony direct, and other retailers I have browsed have 80GB refurbs. What gives?

80gb will be re-released with MGSIV as a package. Apparently it will also include the sixaxis dualshock controller.

It's happened. The bundle we've all been waiting for will indeed be coming to store shelves. Sony is releasing a PlayStation 3 bundle for the release of Metal Gear Solid 4. It will include an 80GB system, the game and one Dual Shock 3 controller for $499. We assume that this bundle will hit June12th

Great looking and interesting procurement doc.

Read the fine point. The date is consistent with the end of HD DVD . The Air Force was on top of things and was saying it has to be BD only. They want players for the troops.

Semper Fi.

I just got my PS3. I haven't checked the firmware number yet, but, assuming that it needs to be upgraded....

Since I have no plans (nor any convenient way) to hook it up online...and since it's a 40GB and hence doesn't have a card reader...and since it would be nice *not* to have to go out and buy USB/card reader thingie or a USB memory stick...and since I'm not a gamer but only have this for Blu-Ray...

Is the firmware upgrade present on some Blu-Ray discs? I seem to recall hearing that that was the case, but I couldn't find anything about it by varioius searches here. I've got a couple of new releases -- Simpsons Movie and Resident Evil: Extinction (?) -- and was wondering whether they or others had this and if so, did things happen automatically.

Maybe you can get SOny to send you a CD-ROM with it on?

However, USB sticks are about $20 for Gbs of storage, so a small one is peanuts. Go into Office Depot or Max and get the cheapest one you can find... Just my 2ps worth.

I second your suggestion. You can get a 1 GB USB flash drive for a few dollars (e.g., $12.99 this week at Cir. City). Without a direct internet connection to the PS3, downloading the firmware update on a PC and using a flash drive to move in onto the PS3 is the way to go.

CD-R works also.

For updating firmware? Actually, sony doesn't support updates via CD-ROM or -R or whatever. I think someone asked about updates via blu-ray disks. Some GAME disks contain a firmware update, not movie disks.

Wrong. You can update the firmware on the PS3 via a CD-R. Just go to the Sony site, download and burn the files onto a CD-R, and load it into your PS3. Simple as that.

Yes. I did at least 2 updates that way before I got the internets.

I just got a panasonic 58" HDTV and am now trying to start going blu-ray and using my PS3 that I have had for a while but have only used for gaming.

As such, I am now trying to optimize my audio for this setup to get the best sound from the blu-ray disks that I can and I am getting confused trying to match the setting on the PS3 with the settings on my receiver and I do not appear to be getting proper 5.1 type sound yet.

My receiver is the Onkyo HT-S790 which does not do HDMI. I do plan to get one in the future that will, but for now that is what I am using. I do understand that even though it will do 7.1, since I am using optical I will only get 5.1 and I'm fine with that.

Right now I am running HDMI to my TV and then optical from the TV to the Onkyo. Since the HDMI auto setting on the PS3 won't help since it is just learning what the TV will do, I am having to manually set the audio settings and that is where I'm getting confused. The PS3 mainly is listing a lot of different PCM formats to pick from. I played some with different ones last night but didn't notice any major difference. Dolby digital is selected in the menu as well. My Onkyo choices appear to all be Dolby Digial/DTS based, but so far from the PS3 I have seen no indication that it is receiving anything in DD and when cycling through listening modes the only DD options that come up look like the ones that are converting 2 channel to 5 channel which is not what I want.

So I am having a hard time matching the PS3 settings with my Onkyo receiver settings. Can anybody give me some advise on what settings I should be setting on the PS3 and what listening mode the Onkyo should be in in order to get good 5.1 sound output? Also, would I would be better off running the optical cable from the PS3 to the Onkyo instead of going through the TV?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's the crux of the problem right there. Set the PS3 Audio to optical and bitstream. You'll get legacy DD & DTS 5.1. If you set the PS3 to LPCM you will get 2.0 PCM.

I will try that tonight. I was just trying to save some cabling with a single audio out cable from the TV to the Onkyo.

I did see the bitsteam setting, but it was far from clear what it did except for a warning that some content may not play so I left it alone.

For anybody who was intrigued by the "Secrets" review of the PS3 several pages back, it may be worth your while to read these two posts on the subject from another thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...&postcount=430

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...&postcount=434

Very informative and articulate breakdown of the results of the Secrets review and how it conflicts with other benchmark results/reviews.
