I called Sony today to complain about the bug of my player freezing after the 1.3 update.
FWIW, I have had no freezes or lock-ups with BD playback since loading V1.31. However, I haven't had any FOX BDs on hand to try. Paramount and Warner BD-25s are playing fine.

I have 1.31. I was watching Xmen 3 the other day and it froze once.
oK So with the 60g and wireless, can you download the upgrades without using the Ethernet port, just the wireless connection?
Rick
Yes, if you have a wireless network and the 60GB Sony, you can use its built-in wireless capability. Or, as I mentioned earlier, you can download the firmware upgrade to your PC, copy it to a flash card and upgrade via the flash card. In this case, no network connection (wired or wireless) is needed.
I have now watched Ice Age and Kingdom of Heaven with Firmware 1.31 update and had lockup with both these movies. Called sony and reset to factory condition and no lockups with these 2 movies. It must be the firmware 1.31 update is causing this problem. Sony needs to get its s*** together.
Can someone help me out? I only have two movies "Underworld" and "X-men". Now I'm not sure if this is normal or not. When watching X-men last night the scene where Mystique decides to tell the military dudes where Magnetos hideout is and the old dude says "Hell hath no fury like a women scorned" the screen turns black and a little disc logo appears (it's like 2 seconds). and the movie continues to play normally. Is this a layer change? Does anyone elses copy do this? I'm running the latest firmware.

Eh? At what point did it freeze? I had to upgrade from 1.10 to 1.31 to get my PS3 to see my AirPort Base Station and it played Kingdom of Heaven fine last night. I don't have Ice AGe, though...

And if I'm hooked up to my computer via Ethernet connection, I assume I can download any upgrades from that connection too.....I'm just trying to know as much as I can before I get one of these baby's....
Also I was checking around today at Best Buy for the Component Video chords for the PS3, none on the shelf where they have a spot for them, the component video chords they are selling for the PS2 are going for $62 does that sound right?
I don't have an HDMI input, I will have to use Component....
Thanks
Rick
You can download from ethernet, wireless, whatever and upgrade that way.
Component Video Cables are $19.99 from Sony...if they are $50 or more I'm guessing they are probably Monster Cable brand, vastly overpriced, with no increase in visual quality over the $19.99 sony branded ones.

i would also suggest the sony made component cable. its made and packaged for the ps2 but it works perfectly with th3 ps3. im using it myself....don't buy any higher priced cables you well not see any pq difference, only a placebo effect which monster cable has on people.
How do you know if your display supports Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr? I have my PS3 hooked up to a Samsung HLS-5688, & while it seems that Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr looks better than RGB overall, dark scenes are darker with less detail than RGB.
So um yeah im confused & would appreciate some advice.
If your display did not support YCbCr over HDMI, you would know it immediately as all the colors would be WAY off. You TV may allow for separate settings and calibration for RGB versus YCbCr. Just adjust the contrast and brightness to the settings that look best for each format.

Where can I find the sony cables? And they are for Playstation not regular Component video cables?
Rick
Sony has a multi-AV out on the back of their Playstation consoles. It's a proprietary connector which can be used to output S-Video, Composite or Component cables along with stereo audio.
The PS3 also has a standard HDMI connector. For all other types of connections, you have to get a set of cables with this multi AV out connector on one end. You can go to games stores or somewhere like Toys R Us and find Playstation cables from brands like Mad Catz. I got my Playstation component video cables for less than $10. Only complaint is it's short but now with wireless controllers you can put the console close to the TV.
Question, how is the PS3 for SD playback at 480P...? I have the Oppo which does a very nice 720P upscale but my Mits hc3000 also has an excellent scaler and feeding it 480P from the Oppo and letting it upscale looks amazingly close... I have one HDMI input and util I get a switcher and some more HDMI cables I will be plugging, unplugging...

I have X-Men 3 at home right now and I'll finish watching it tonight. I watched about half of it last night but I didn't come across that scene.
For the record, I've now watched Kingdom of Heaven, X Men3, Underworld: Evolution, and Black Hawk Down on BD and I have had no lock ups or freezes ever during playback. X Men and Underworld I've been watching since the 1.31 firmware update.
LOL. This could be the dumbest thing I've ever done. "the screen turns black and a little disc logo appears" Well it turns out that little disc is the freaking MOON in the actual movie! My darkness was low enough so i couldn't tell that there was forest underneath it, so it just looked like a disc and blackness. OH Man....boy do I feel lame.
it happens randomly and is not title/disc specific. Nor is it specific to any sector of the BD movie... just random. Sometimes a movie will play all the way through. then the next day that same disc will freeze in some spot. Then the next day play.
It's not BD software related. It's firmware in the player or something to do with the PS3 itself.
I watched MI3 over the weekend, sweet flick, and it froze half way thru the movie. Controls came on screen but did not function. I had to hard reboot. The movie played fine the rest of the way. I hope this is a one time thing.
Mine did the same thing on 2 different movies! I played BOTH movies before I upgraded to 1.31 and had no problems. I called Sony and asked if the 1.31 upgrade had given others the same "Freeze" problem and was told he didn't know.
I then asked if another upgrade would correct the freeze and was told my unit was defective and that Sony would be sending me a box to use to send back my complete system and after they received it, they would send me a brand new unit and start the warranty from the day I receive the new unit.

Interesting. Some folks have said they didn't start getting the "freeze" problem until 1.30/1.31. If that's the case, then it must be a firmware issue, and maybe the Sony technician you spoke to just didn't know, and figured it's easiest to resolve (at the moment for him/her at least) the issue by sending you another one.
I wonder if a few of us call Sony directly, whether we'll get the same response, or different ones depending on the technician we get on the phone....
Do you know how long it will take for them to send you a new unit?

Are the multi-out cables for the PS2 compatible with the PS3's multi-AV out?
I've watched two Blu-Ray DVDs (Talladega Nights and the Devil Wears Prada) so far on my 60GB PS3. The PS3 "froze" once while watching each of these movies. By "froze", I mean that the PS3 was behaving as if it was paused. You can still see the DVD's picture. However, selecting any of the transport commands (e.g. play, stop,
forward, reverse) had no effect. The PS3 wasn't totally frozen. I can still bring up the PS3's onscreen menu (not the DVD's menu), and traverse the menu with the cursor keys, but the PS3 did not responsed to any of the transport commands on the on-screen menu. I can also bring up the main PS3 menu by pressing the Playstation button. Then, I can turn it off, and turn it back on. No need to eject the disk. No need to completely turn off the PS3 using the main switch in the back. I just need to turn put it in standby mode and then turn it back on.
To summarize the PS3 acts as if it is frozen/paused, and doesn't respond to any transport commands. However, it isn't completely frozen, since I can still bring up the on-screen menu (not the DVD's menu, but the PS3's menu).
I am running the latest firmware (1.31). My PS3 is in a well ventilated area, so heat shouldn't be the problem. Is anyone else having this issue?
I submitted a description of this problem (very similar to above posting) last Saturday, 12/16. I got a response back from Sony the following Monday saying:
"We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. The most
effective way for us to assist you is by speaking with you directly. Please call our Consumer Services Department at (800) 345-7669."
Hmmmm.... I'll call them up and see what they have to say.
Are the multi-out cables for the PS2 compatible with the PS3's multi-AV out?
all av multi cables made for the ps2 will work on your ps3....sonys av multi connection port on the back of the ps3 is identical to the ps2 connection port. the standard av multi cable that sony included with the ps3 will also fit in the back of your ps2.....its all the same.

I am about to reset also due to lock ups with BR movies. How do I save my games so I don't loose them during the restore?

Don't return it/swap it. It's not your machine. It's the firmware... the tech you spoke to didn't know.
Try resetting to factory. I can explain how if you don't know (turn the power off on the back. Hold down the power button on the front and keep it pressed... then turn on the power on the back. After about 5 seconds you'll hear a second beep and the PS3 will turn off after having just started to turn on. Now remove your finger. Now press the button again as usual to turn on and you should be reset).
I haven't had a chance to watch a movie since restoring but I'll try this week.
I just got my PS3 but no talladega nights! I see no coupon or anything regarding talladega nights. Is it suppose to be in the box? Thank God its not Lord of the Rings or some great movie like that.
