Why is it that my PS3 will not let my update from CDR or USB stick?? It is not connected to the Internet...

It complains about not finding anything......

Letting the PS3 decode all formats is the easiest route (setting the audio out to LPCM), and I doubt you would ever notice the diffference between the PS3 decoding or your receiver decoding.

So, once you have updated you really don't need to do anything. Discs with DTS-MA will be decoded and sent to your receiver or pre/pro as LPCM, just like Dolby True HD is being handled already.

Of course, this assumes that you have set the audio out to LPCM, if not then just do that. You should be good to go. You never need change it or do anything else except select the DTS-MA track on the HD movie disk menu when available.

One thing that all this new technology has brought us is a plethora of tweaking options we never had before. The good news is, that if we want it simple, it can be so--if we want to constantly tweak, it can still be so. Some believe that the simple route can compromise quality a bit, but it is all relative and a welcome tradeoff for some.

If my age has caused me to make any errors, I assume others, possibly younger, possibly older, will offer corrections.

Heck, I'm 69 and have no trouble doing any of this.

I think you have to create a special folder.

"PS3" and put the update in that. I think. Google it. Or maybe someone else can confirm this.

The PS3 update page has changed to show the features of 2.3, so the download from the playstation site maybe be current now even though it still has the 2.20 logo

So, for those of you that have udpated the PS3 to 2.30. Have you noticed that the picture in the store don't load right away? They are blank. And then after about 30 seconds some of them will fill in.

High Traffic?

It's almost certainly high traffic right now, I honestly wouldn't sweat it. It's also possible that they will be tweaking it through further updates over the coming weeks.

This isn't new. It has never been able to decode these formats. I was hoping they would get added in this release, but I guess not.

You have to follow directions.

Update data download procedure

Create a folder on the storage media in which to save the update data.
Using a PC, create a folder named PS3 on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named UPDATE.

Download the update data and save it in the "UPDATE" folder created in step 1.

Quote:

Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3 system will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.

This doesn't make sense - my receiver only support 7.1 channels, and it's DTS-HD MA logo does say "limited".

But, as I said right at the start of my post, I'm in Australia where there's a PAL system so my PS3 should be a PAL PS3 and it plays both PAL and NTSC provided the DVDs are either Region 4 (Australia) or Region ). Another poster in the US, who has a US PS3, reports his plays Region 0 PAL discs.

It's not a PAL or NTSC limitation. It's simply that the PS3 only plays discs from it's specific Region or with Region 0 coding.

um...yeah. If you read through the last few pages of this thread, or the last 15 pages of the FW 2.3 thread, you'll see that many people have tried it.

Okay, here's what I've seen so far:

5.1 DTS-MA decodes perfectly. Sounds just like Dolby TrueHD 5.1.
6.1 DTS-MA gets sent as 7.1 PCM to my receiver. This could just be because my receiver doesn't accept 6.1 PCM. But in any event, the rear channel is just spread across the two rear channels in 7.1, like you'd expect.
DTS-ES Discrete decodes to 7.1 PCM! Even says [DTS-ES Disc] on the PS3's OSD.
DTS-HD HR decodes to PCM correctly, but I can't really hear the difference between it and 1.5M core DTS.
DTS-ES Matrix appears to decode as 5.1 PCM. Appropriate, since it's truly a 5.1 track. The receiver can create any rear channel effect you'd like.
DTS 96/24 Does NOT appear to be recognized. This exotic track alone will have to continue to be bitstreamed I'm afraid. Everything else looks good to go for PCM!

Just did the 2.3 download, do I leave the PS3 audio set to Bitstream or PCM. I had it on Bitstream up till now, I have the Onkyo SR605. Called Sony, they said to set it to Bitstream.

No, it should (and always should have been) on LPCM so that the PS3 can decode the audio! Your Onkyo will say Multichannel input for everything coming from the PS3 regardless of the format.

Here is a list of movies so far with 7.1 DTS-HD MA or HR that are being sent out only as 5.1. Denon had a firmware update to fix that problem for devices that bitstream, but in this instance Sony is going to have to fix this problem. It is mostly New Line movies. If anyone else has more titles please add them on. This was a rough copy done from another forum.

******7.1 Titles*******
"The Condemned" - LionsGate - NO
"Pan's Labyrinth" - New Line - NO
"Rush Hour 3" - New Line - NO
"Rush Hour 3 (Disk 2 * Deleted Scenes/Extended) - New Line - YES (Wierd)
"Shoot em Up" - New Line - NO
"HairSpray" - New Line - NO

Ooops, I got too excited too quickly. This only works with DTS-ES Discrete on blu-ray! DVD still just gets decoded as 5.1.

The way I see it, the reason DTS is handled differently for DVD than blu-ray is because they use different software players in the PS3. So many have been looking at 2.30 like it's an upgrade to the PS3's DTS decoder, I think it's more likely that is was an update to the blu-ray player software which left the DVD player software untouched.

I can confirm "The Condemned and Rush Hour 3-Main Feature" as not decoding properly. Also confirm that Rush Hour 3 (Disk 2-Deleted scenes) does decode properly. PCM to Onkyo 805.

I have a Oppo 981-HD and I am planning to buy a PS3 40GB just for using as a blu-ray player. Should I switch to PS3? I am very happy with the Oppo's upscaling quality. Did anybody compare up-converted picture quality of PS3 and Oppo 981-HD side-by-side?

PQ looks terrific. Get the 80Gb model (out soon) and sell your Oppo since the 80Gb version will play SACD's.

Try this site. There are three or more selections for DTS 7.1 which is somewhat frustrating but it's a nice way to seem what is available.

hi just downloaded the PS3 update and popped in the DEEP PURPLE: Live At Montreux Blu-Ray to test out its DTS-HD High Resolution Audio track. I am using the Onkyo 605 receiver with HDMI of course. The funny thing is that when i checked the bitrate of the DTS HD track, it was only at 2.0. And we all know that DTS Core is at 1.5. So i was wondering how much of an upgrade is DTS-HD High Resolution Audio compared to DTS core? And i am assuming that DTS-HD MA is completly different from High Resolution?

Can anyone please explain the difference between the tracks? Thank you

Could somebody please confirm whether this is true once 2.30 is installed? I haven't had a chance to download the new firmware myself, but I know for sure that my DVD DTS-ES films like LOTR work fine at the moment via bitstream.

Thanks

The PS3 played flawlessly my copy of Queen live Montreal which is DTS HD 96/24

The Onk 705 also displays at 96khz
