One-and-Only PS3 as Blu-Ray Player Thread - Page 566

I highly suggest the PS3. It does it all for much less than getting 2 separate components. The 299 price can come when you sign up at sony and also some are getting it for that price because Amazon sent out a sorry for the HD DVD loss coupon...

The $299 PS3 deal can be found here:

www.sony.com/sonycard/ps3

All the info you need on this deal can be found here:

Combine this deal with a 10% off purchases of $199 or more coupon at Circuit City and you're looking at $260 for a 40GB PS3.

Should I select ALL the audio options, even the 7.1 options, even tho I only have a 5.1 theater?

If a BD movie has, for example, 7.1 DTS HD MA and I don't have it selected, will I get it in 5.1 or not at all?
I selected all the options... Why not?

You may want to be careful about selecting frequencies that your receiver cannot handle. I can't elaborate on it because I don't know the details of the "why" and "what (can happen)", but suffice it to say I wouldn't take a chance with expensive equipment when bad things can happen.

I am pretty sure it can handle most if not all of them. I have played many titles so far and not a single issue has occured. I appreciate the concern though.

There are a ton with different freq at the end.

Check them all! If your receiver can handle MPCM it should be able to do it. If you are worried, let it pick them automatically. I have the Yami 661 and it selected all of them automatically.

The reason why I haven't checked them all is because someone once posted that if you check the 7.1 options and you don't have 7.1, you might miss some sound.

Is it true that checking all the options is the best course of action?

No heat issues here at all. The back is totally open to my unfinished area in my basement. It makes it that much easier to unplug and plug new units in. I also keep all of my movies back there with a message chair and LCD. Not to mention a nice cabinet with all of my movie characters inside. It is my man room.

I was only able to play around with my A35 hooked up to my Sony 5300 to test this, and it wasn't easy because of the time it takes to switch from PCM to bitstream on the A35, but I didn't hear a difference.

It looks great! I have a low boy unit with the back open just below my 92 inch screen, no heat problems for me either.

After doing some good A/B comparisons and most recently having a Denon 3800, 2500, Pioneer 95FD and Panny BD30 in my set up I can now say they are all pretty much even at 1080p/24 (23.98). The PS3 even surpasses them in some areas. My Sony VW200 PJ can accept 10 bit color and since the PS3 does 10 bit color I can see an improvement in color. And of course I don't have to mention the way faster load times either. Last night we watched Juno and the color and overall pic Q was astounding. I am used to having a few minutes to get popcorn and drinks ready so I was under the gun when the PS3 loaded the movie so fast. I have been experimenting with a lot of my Blu ray collection and so far not any of them has had a single playback issue. That is very rare these days with all the HD players on the market. I also have to say I don't know what the fuss is about over the remotes. I purchased both of them and used the nyko to teach my Sony Navitus and Universal MX3000 the commands. I will use the PS3 Bluetooth remote sometimes as well. Another complaint from others is that the PS3 is loud. I did get the 40GB version but I can honestly say it is very quiet. Maybe they got theirs from launch. I can confidently say that I saved the best for last. The PS3 beats the rest in overall performance. And to think I got it for 299! I am also pleased with the 2.30 update and hope they keep more bonus updates coming. Being able to update online or thru a USB flashcard (like my crystalio II) is sweet. I will now go on Blu ray hiatus and just enjoy the performance the PS3 gives me. I did not plan to get any games since I already own the 360 Elite but I will probably pick up Gran Turismo Prologue and MGS4 when it hits... Why not? Here are a few pics:

Thanks for the report joerod. Allthough I have not compared as many BR players as you, I could find absolutely no dif at all between my BD30 (in default Picture mode) and PS3 at 1080/24p.

Since you mentioned you will check out a few games, be sure to give the game Uncharted a spin as it is a GREAT PS3 exclusive game.

Will the PS3 be optimal here too, compared to other current BD players?
It will be interesting to see if the new SA's can compete w/ the PS3 in picture and loadtimes.

I don't have a 768 pj but I do have a 768 screen. The PS3 works fine with it.

As far as I know, no player whether DVD or BD offers 768 upscaling/downscaling. The scaling options are 720p, 1080i and 1080p in every player I've seen. With DVDs, if you scale to any of those options in the player the screen/pj is going to rescale to 768 anyway and in my experience the result of 2 scaling processes is worse than just sending the standard def signal to my screen and letting it do all of the rescaling in one step.

I just got the PS3 last week and it came up with 1080i output for my screen as the highest res option during setup and I've left it on that. I have yet to try setting BD output to 720p and seeing what happens but picture quality with a 1080i input on my screen is simply superb and I've had no real inclination to experiment and see if I can better it.

Whatever player you get, at some point you're going to be at the mercy of the scaler in your projector and I really don't think the results with the PS3 will be significantly worse than the results with anything else because of that simple fact. The PS3s output at 1080i and 1080p is comparable to every other player and the pj is going to rescale that so there's no reason in my view not to consider the PS3 and a lot of reasons to seriously consider it.

The situation might be different if there was a player which offered scaling to 768p as well as the other options, since then results would depend on whether the pj or the player offered the better scaler. In the absence of such a player I think you'll get the best results sending native resolution to the pj, whether that be native DVD or BD (1080i will be necessary for BD if the pj doesn't accept 1080p) and simply let the pj perform the scaling.

There are, of course, external video scalers which can deliver 768p but that means adding another box and I've no experience with such devices. It is possible that one of them may do a better job than your pj.

I will be getting a PS3 mainly for blue ray but obviously would like to get some games which is new to me. I enjoy all sports-what games would you guys recommend for adults new to gaming?
Thanks Toe, I will check out that game. I just bought the Gran Tursimo Prologue game so I could use a couple more. I really am happy knowing what I saved and what I gained in performance. The PS3 gets it done nicely. I am having some friends over tonite to watch a movie. Wait until they see what "player" is playing the Blu ray title!

If you only have a 5.1 setup, you may not want to check off the 7.1 boxes. IF the PS3 can mix the SB channels down into the Surrounds, then it will only do this if you leave the 7.1 boxes unchecked. Otherwise it will send the SB channels to your receiver where they will be discarded if your receiver is setup with the SB channels off.

IF you have a 7.1 setup, check all the boxes....with one caveat. As it was mentioned above, you should really check the specs on your receiver to make sure it can handle the higher sampling frequency options. If it can't, it could produce damaging sounds from your speakers.

If you're into baseball, MLB 08: The Show is an amazing game.

I have not bought any games since I have been waiting to see if the PS3 would get DTS MA. Not that it does, I am looking to get into gaming a bit.

I can't decide between Uncharted or Assassins Creed. Any Suggestions?

Also gonna pick up the Dual Shock 3

MLB 08 The Show if you like baseball. Or even if you don't...it's that good.

NHL 08 if you like Hockey. It was the best sports game released until MLB 08, IMO.

Also you can buy High Velocity Bowling off the PSN Store if you want more of a casual, laid back sports title.

I haven't played Assassin's Creed but I'll still recommend Uncharted. In fact there was recently a poll created (not sure if it was here or at PSU.com) with a new PS3 owner asking if he should pick up Creed or Uncharted and it was roughly 90% for Uncharted.

But keep in mind they are completely different styles of games. Uncharted is essentially an action/shooter game with platforming and puzzle elements sparsed inbetween. Assassin's Creed is a bit more of a slower, mission-based stealth game. Both have good story elements from what I hear, but Uncharted pretty much universally gets the nod for production values, graphics and gameplay.

I won't be missing anything in my 5.1 system by leaving the 7.1 unchecked? What happens if the movie is in 7.1? Will the PS3 put the SB sound information into the S speakers?

What frequencies could the Onkyo TX-SR605 handle?

The PS3 will automatically detect the capabilities of the HDMI receiver when set to automatic, and it will show you what it can handle.

We don't know for sure how the PS3 handles down mixing of 7.1 sources to 5.1. Technically, you are already losing something because even if the PS3 mixes in the SB channels to the surrounds, those signals are not going to be coming from the locations they were meant to originate from.

However, if you are only running 5.1 and you do check the 7.1 boxes, the PS3 will assume you have back surrounds and those signals WILL be lost. So, the best bet is to only select 5.1.

As for the sampling frequencies for the 605, your manual should be able to tell you that. If not there is a 605 thread in the Receivers section. I do not own an Onkyo, so I can't answer that.

I think you will like it. I dont play that many games, but this one kept my attention the whole way through and is a great HT experience I will have to check out GT5P.

I hear ya...people are surprised to see a PS3 used as the primary BR player in a nice HT. I have given the PS3 reccomend to quite a few people now for BR only and more times than not they have this surprised look on their face like "it is a gaming console" and then they see the performance and are sold
