One-and-Only PS3 as Blu-Ray Player Thread - Page 58

I have a question, I was watching my first retail Blu-Ray movie (I don't count Talladega Nights as a pack in.)
Is there anyway to bring up the menu while the movie is playing like HD-DVD?
I was watching the Transporter and it behaved very much like a standard DVD.

Ha now that's a classic one. But anyway, no freezes for me so far. I wonder if it's a combination of a specific setting and the firmware that are causing this issue. Anyway, XMen3 has that AVC encoding so I was curious to see how good it looked, and it looked pretty damn good. The opening scene had transfers up in the 43Mbps range, as well as the closing scene. All of the 'deleted scenes' were in HD as well.

On a side note, it was a horrible movie IMO. Great to look at, but not very enjoyable as a movie (if that makes sense). To me, Black Hawk Down is still the best movie on Blu Ray I've seen so far...and I usually don't get into movies about military combat.

Yes, just press the square button during playback and you get interactive menus while the movie plays.

What does the Reset do exactly? does it actually reset it back to v.1.1 fw?

You have to system restore to get it back to 1.1

I just called Sony, and as a last resort I had to system restore. Im losing all my data because of this shi* It said it would take 230 minutes to restore, im down to 120 right now. Yes..thats right, it takes almost up to 4 hours to system restore. Like a computer, it re-formats the whole hard drive.

I'll post here as soon as its done, and tell you if its really the firmware causing this. Because if that is the case, my movies should play fine because the firmware would be reset to 1.1

Ne who, Sony said I would need to send back my system if it still doesnt work after this restore. They already are sending a UPS guy to bring the boxes for me to ship it back to Sony, but I can cancel this if this restore works.

My only question now, even if this does work...how does this really solve anything? My system isnt up to date, and they wont let me play online with these new updates.

Crap..umm I wish I could tell you. My System is still restoring, it wont let me go to the main menu, so I cant walk you through.

Its in the system setting, you go to the cross bar "System Setting"...I believe under the system settings icon there should be another small picture called "System Settings". Click that, towards the bottom their should be a "Reset System Settings" and "Restore System Settings".

This is all from memory tho, so I apologize if I got anything wrong.

Cool bud, Thanks.

Good info to know.

and you know it sucks hardcore when we can't access the store or go online gaming without current FW.

so I hate to say this but. I can't wait till she is Hax0red like the PSP.

not so I can play Homebrew crap. but just so I have more control Over her.

Yes, Im not happy about this situation at all. All my game data is now gone either way. Everything is gone.

But at least I will know once and for all, if its the fn Firmware thats causing this. If my PS3 still wont play movies after this, I wont feel so bad for sending my PS3 back to SONY for a new system, because it meant there was something wrong with my drive.

I dont want a system that has a messed up drive.
If it is indeed the same layout as psp. just pull the drive. throw it in a chassis, and dump the saves off of it. and or data you intend to keep.

I have 700 gigabytes worth of HDD space between my htpc's and externals.

If it is just the drive that is good ( for me ) I will just swap it.

Keep us posted on how they play after the restore.

Good Luck.

Yeah, I should of saved my data on something else before wiping it. The lady from Sony told me to do it then, I just wanst thinking. Oh well, theres not any great games out anyways (besides the ones I have)..so it will give me a challenge to re-do it all.

I hope its just a firmware issue, and not the actualy Blu Ray disc reader.

You have some Blu Ray movies on hand, correct? If so, can you do me a huge favor? After you restore your system to factory settings and firmware 1.1, can you try to play any blu ray disc on a tv that accepts 720p signals? The rumor was that a guy in japan (who got a ps3 at launch) had his PS3 outputting Blu Ray movies at 720p before the first firmware update, and I'd like to know if that's true.

It's not BD software related. It's firmware in the player or something to do with the PS3 itself.

I'm on 1.30 I think still.

I've watched about four Blu-ray movies so far. Of which two had this lock-up.

It just happens randomly. What's even more strange is once the movie locks up you can still bring up the blu-ray menu controls over the picture, even use the go to feature to dial in the time spot of the movie, and even then looks like it's playing according to the time still counting.

Holding the PS button on the controller gives you the option to turn off the controller or the PS3.

So far I've only watched movies alone, but if I had a guest this would be real annoying, since it takes a while to turn the system off and on and then get through all the menu and warning dialogs back to the movie.

It happened 20 minutes into one movie, and the other an hour and 20 minutes.

Well... heres the bad news.

After a 4 hour re-format...I put in the Lady In The Water Blu Ray disc. The screen went black, then went to the grey screen, and froze. I had to shut off my system with my controller.

I went to the system info, and what do you know..it says IM STILL 1.31.

So...I guess the system restore doesnt get rid of your firmware. Which makes no sense to me at all. All my data is wiped, when I turned the PS3 on, it went through the same set up I had to go through on launch day...its back to its factory settings.

Heck, I even re-set the settings, after re-storing the systems hardrive. Yet, firmware 1.31 is still on there, and my system keeps freezing.

Im really at a loss, looks like im going to have to send in my PS3, because its not playing movies.

Sorry guys, but looks like I cant check the 720p for ya.

Now the question is..how the fu** do you get rid of firmware?
Woah, Mine is supposed to get here tomorrow and now I'm spooked.
Should I just not update the firmware? But if so, can I use the PS store to download...?
Yikes, what to do!

Seriosuly, I dont know what to tell you. Theres a lot of people out there that claim they have no problems whatsoever. Im being honest with you, the video games play just fine. The Blu Ray movies just keep freezing, they wont even play. Well..they will play after many freezes.

When Sony replaces my system, I dont even know if I want to update my firmware, untill I know they have fixed it.

But yeah..as far as I know, you cant take off your firmware once you have it downloaded.

I was wondering about that when I saw your post, when I updated mine it said there was no way to go back to an earlier firmware.

Crap. I primarily want this to watch BDs so what to do?
I definitely want to have access to download stuff through the store though!

I was afraid of that since I figured we're most likely flashing the BIOS. Plus when you go to update firmware it says that once you update "you cannot go back to previous firmware" or something like that. This sucks because you can't access the PS network at all if you're firmware isn't up to date. Anyway, I hope your new PS3 works out better for you.

You know..im stupid. I remember actually seeing that message. So if this is a firmware issue, then were Fuc**d. Because it doesnt let you go back to the original firmware.

Im seriously at a loss now. Sony is supposed to be sending me a box so I can re-sent my PS3 back to them...but im not even sure what to do at this point.

Is this a hard drive, or a disc reader problem? Or a firm ware problem? If its just a firmware problem, and not my disc reader...would it be worth it to just wait out the freezing, and wait for Sony to put out a patch to fix this?

The games are on Blu Ray..and work fine. The movies are on Blu Ray..but wont play. I dont get this at all.

Trust me, this isn't simply a problem with the firmware being completely defective and crippling every system. I have the latest firmware and have never experienced any troubles with the PS3. The only problem I've ever had was the demo of F1 freezing during loading. Through research I've come to the conclusion that the demo has a glitch in it. So I think the reality is that there's either a combination of a problem with firmware interacting with specific systems or firmware and a combination of specific settings.

damn. I havent told the war council of my purchase yet and she was even looking at our netflix queue and seeing all the Blu-Rays but it wasnt clicking with her. I had previously mentioned "HDdvd" alot so since HD is obviously not in the term BluRay, she doesn't know. I got the sweet amazon raffle deal with no tax so I took that as a sign. But MAN, if this damn thing starts freezing up while we are watching these new "BluRay" discs than this whole purchase (unneccessary in her view since we have a critter coming...) is going to go over like a fart in a spacesuit!

Well thanks for that info. Im sure that its a problem with my system then, im just going to send it in.

I bought a PS3, but then my 4 year old non 1080p HD RPTV blew up, so I am upgrading to a Samsung HL-S6187 1080p DLP which comes in Saturday. I had the PS3 connected through a Yamaha RV-2600 HDMI switching reciever and it worked perfect set to 1080i, but the Yamaha will not handle 1080p. Actually I am told it will still show it, but it converts to 1080i, so you lose the 1080p benefit. I was thinking of using one of the HDMI ports on the Sammy to hook the PS3 directly into the TV to get full 1080p video, but now I wonder what that will do to my audio stream. Before I could just use the HDMI for both and it automatically used MPCM on the reciever, which I understand is full lossless sound. In fact, I have actually been more impressed with the improvement in sound fidelity even more so than video quality in the BD discs, so I don't want to lose this. Will I now lose this option when I hook up the PS3 to my Yamaha receiver via fiber optic for the sound? Do I have to set the PS3 to bitstream and let the receiver do the encoding or is there anyway to let the PS3 do the encoding and just pass through the receiver like before? It seems kind of strange if I can not get the same sound fidelity via fiber optic vs HDMI for audio, can somebody clear this up for me?

I wonder if a few of us call Sony directly, whether we'll get the same response, or different ones depending on the technician we get on the phone....

Do you know how long it will take for them to send you a new unit?

They said 5-8 days AFTER they receive my unit. I have downloaded a game from Sony web site which I paid for. I asked them today what happens to the game I paid for if I send them my system. They said too bad for me, I would lose it and would have to purchase it again since there is no way to get the game to transfer to my PC to save it!

I tried to watch another blu-ray movie tonight called "Click" and for some reason it played the entire movie WITHOUT freezing once!! The only thing different this time is that I paused the movie a few times to get drinks & snacks. Maybe it is a buffer problem and if the data from the disk overfills the buffers it gets locked up and when you pause it it has time to catch up??

I will try more disks with & without using the pause to see if that changes anything because I really don't want to go through the big hassel of sending it back.

If I was you, (I have a 1080p TV and similar settings) I would allow the PS3 to be hooked up via 1080i to the receiver and then 1080i to the TV to get audio and video through HDMI through the receiver and the TV

then, many forget that a 1080p TV converts all sources to 1080p - so you are actually getting 1080p if you input a 1080i signal

you won't lose any quality -- at least thats how it works on my TV - bet its the same with yours

Muh? Negative. Hook up the HDMI to your Sammy & run an optical audio cable from the PS3 to your receiver. You can select optical audio out to run in conjunction with hdmi.
The less the video signal is up/down converted, the better. It wont be that hard to test both & see which works best for you. Youre not getting 1080p from anything but a 1080p signal, however the tv will upconvert everything into 1080p since it is its native resolution.
You should be very happy with the tv by the way. I have a sammy 5688 & love it. Although i am considering that new sub $1k mitsu projector simply for a larger screen..... I just watched Black Hawk Down yesterday & it was absolutely awesome in HD. In your ps3 settings select the Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr, it makes even more of a difference with the Samsung.

That is BS! I wonder if the reps are misinformed since it is a new product. That just doesn't seem right that there is no way for them to allow you to re-download the content with no fee. I can understand that they can't just transfer it over, but they should issue a credit to your account or something. I know that it is probably not a large amount of money, but it is the principal!
