One-and-Only PS3 as Blu-Ray Player Thread - Page 617

As said, you cannot output anything over 48khz over optical. You have to use HDMI or analog.
My Marantz DV7600 will send a 96k PCM stereo stream over optical to the Rotel. This is using a DVD-Audio though. Is this is a forced limitation on the Blu-Ray spec, or a limitation of the PS3?

Just to be clear I'm just trying to send a 96/24 PCM Stereo stream to the Rotel, not a 5.1 96/24 stream. The stereo stream can be sent via toslink.

That one difference is with DTS ES discrete 6 channel soundtracks where you lose the 6th channel. I swap back to bitstream for those tracks because I have a 6.1 system but apart from that I simply stick with LPCM on everything. If you have a 5.1 system, I'd leave it on LPCM and simply stop worrying. Sound quality appears identical with 5.1 material and the only problem with LPCM output that I can see is that the PS3 doesn't decode the 6th channel of DTS ES soundtracks.

If at some stage in the future Sony puts out an update that lets me set the output as bitstream for DVD and PCM for BD I would choose that option simply so I don't have to remember to check what format the soundtrack is in when I'm playing a DVD. That would be a convenience choice only, based on the fact that I do have a 6.1 system. I wouldn't see any advantage to doing that in a 5.1 system if the opportunity ever arises.

+1

Have the 80 gig models gotten the 65 nm chip yet ???

How good ( or bad ) is the sound quality when using an optical cable to get 5.1 sound to your receiver ? By that i mean compared to good standalone players.

In that scenario does the receiver decode the soundtrack or does the Playstation 3 decode it and then output it via optical ?

I have my 5.1 surround hooked up via optical, it sounds very good, I have it set to bitstream

If you are wondering about the ones produced with the motorstorm pack then no. But from what I have read ALL PS3s produced from here on out that are 80gb will have the 65nm processor.

It's simple if you try to understand it in terms of baseball.

1. Two sides of 11 players each.

2. One innings for each side.

3. Each Batter (called batsman in cricket) comes to the plate (pitch) to play.

4. If he misses, nothing happens. If the ball hits the wicket (that would be the strike zone in baseball) then he is out. Three strikes don't exist. One strike and you're gone. No hit is a foul hit. Anything goes. You can connect with the ball and it can go anywhere. It will count.

5. A pitcher (bowler) pitches (bowls). The ball usually gets to the batter after hitting the ground but throwing the ball straight to the batter is also allowed. Bowling is an art. It takes skill to do it properly. Pitchers throw the ball. Bowlers have to throw the ball but the arm comes over the head like a windmill. There are and were bowlers who managed to bowl at over 90 mph which takes skill, control and strength.

6. A HOME RUN type hit is 6 runs in cricket. That's the maximum and you have plenty of them in a game. If the ball goes to the edge of the field but touches the ground then it is 4 instead of 6.

7. Just like you run from 1st base to 2nd base, you do the same in cricket but there are only two bases. The first base is where the batter is (called striker's end because he strikes the ball) and the second base is where the pitcher is (called the non-striker's end). So one person is running to first base and the other one is running in the opposite direction to second base. The two bases are always loaded in cricket. When they're not loaded it means Game Over!

9. Each time the players swap bases, it is considered 1 run.

10. The team that scores more runs wins. The cricket bat is wider compared to the baseball bat and therefore it is easier to strike therefore there are more runs in cricket.

That's a high level overview of cricket in 10 points. A starter guide to get to know the game. I hope you have a slightly better understanding of the game now.

Given that both the TV and the PS3 are from Sony, you might want to give Sony a call. Talk to the TV people, not the PS3 people, since the TV people will have a better idea if there are any updates to the TV that might fix the problem.

As a last resort, you may have to switch to component cables. Since the TV doesn't support 1080p and you aren't using an HDMI receiver for audio, you won't lose anything by using a component cable and it eliminates the HDCP issue completely.

Anyone using a 12'+ ps3 component cable that they are happy with? I checked monoprice, but only found a 6' run.

When i was an uplink operator for USSB, we used to air a lot of cricket PPV. We all learned the rules and it became a blast to watch. Nothing like the rivalry between India and Pakistan!

Actually after reading some more threads, the ps3 won't upconvert standard dvd's over component cables. So I would prefer to find another solution if possible.

I'm about to get a PS3, either 40GB or 60GB. I'll be using it pretty much as a Blu Ray player only.

Can someone give me the pros and cons of each? I'm sure this topic has been raised a million times but I'm going to be buying very soon and need some quick answers.

Thanks!

There is no difference for playing blu-ray. The 60 gb is backwards compatible with ps2 games is really the only advantage.

I picked up a 12' RocketFish component cable from BestBuy for $25. I found it in the PS2 accessories but it is also compatible with the PS3. That was as cheap or cheaper then I could find online.

That seems to be the new "When will the PS3 decode/bitstream DTS HD MA" question that gets asked every couple of pages.

As far as Blu-ray nothing the 80g adds:
>SACD playback
>Ps2 BWC
>2 USB ports
>Mem card reader
>40g more HDD

Try explaining baseball to someone who doesn't know the rules

1) You get three strikes, foul balls are strikes unless you have two strikes, then foul balls are are not strikes, unless you bunt foul then your out.
2) You can't run if the fielder catches the ball, oh wait, but you tag up.
3) If you hit the ball but the catcher catches it, it's not an out. Unless it was strike two. then you're out
4) If you strike out, but the catcher drops the ball, you can try to make it to first base.

Let's not even get into in-field fly rule or balks!

Hey guys, do (most) all the 40GB PS3s in stores have the 65nm CPU? Is there any way I can tell if I'm buying the latest PS3 hardware or not? Thanks in advance--
post #18498 of 31995
All 40GB PS3s have the 65nm Cell, there will be some with a 45nm Cell and a smaller RSX sometime in the near future.
Anyone know the specs/features of the new 80 Gig MGS4 bundled PS3?

I haven't seen an 80 gig for a few months so this one may be different than the previous one.

Note that "near" is generally estimated to be about 3-4 months from now, unless Sony totally surprises everyone and manages to stick them into the new 80GB units coming out in a few weeks (highly doubtful though).

Can I Do A Full Shuffle?

Now that I've got my entire itunes library in the ps3 I'd like to use it as a full shuffle through all the albums. Is this possible? I see shuffle options on individual albums but not on the entire library. I guess one way is to create a playlist that has everything in it then shuffle that but I'm looking for an easier, lazier way to do it.

Not sure about a full shuffle on the entire library, but if you use the various sort options, you can get different groupings of songs that you can shuffle.

But you can bet Sony will take advantage of the lower power consumption by saving on the cooling solution (smaller heat sinks, no heat pipes). So the 45nm version should weigh less and use less power (both nice to have), but there's no guarantee they will all be quiet. I expect there will still be a chance of getting a noisy unit.

Sorry if this has already been addressed, but I'm searching and haven't found anything yet. After my last update my BD audio is fine, but anything like movie trailers or CDs play as though its only doing the LFE channel. If someone can direct me to the issue I'd appreciate it.

Cricket and Baseball are the most boring sports in the world ( Give me Basketball every day of the week )

Are there any out of sync sound issues that people know of when you use a Playstation 3 connected to a projector through HDMI and connected to a receiver using the optical out ?

Did you convert the AACs then loaded it to PS3?

I just got my IR2BT today. I set it up and got it running with my Harmony 890...damn this thing rocks! I thought the Nyko BlueWave was pretty cool but it's got nothin' on the IR2BT. No lag whatsoever and every button that's on the Sony BT remote is available to me now. Right now they're hard to get but if anyone is on the fence about this thing definitely get one when you can.

I have no idea. I imported the itunes library into tversity then the ps3 streamed it in; I then did a "mass" save of all of them.

Will this work with my Mx500?
