Do you think it's worth selling the PS3 just so that I don't have to use the stupid controller that always seems to need recharging?

Don't know where you heard this, but flat out wrong.

If you want to sell your PS3, do so, but it's pretty ridiculous to do so for the reason stated.

The IR things work great.

Also, get the stupid remote if the controller irks you. You can get one used for under 10 bucks. Heck I have seen pawn shops around here with the remote under 5 bucks.

Read the FAQ. Many viable options shown there. I'm quite happy with the Nyko dongle, which cost me all of $15, with my Harmony. Never dropped a single keypress.

Just buy the PS3 BT remote. I have one and it does a great job.

I can even turn the PS3 on and off with it. Job Done!

I suppose everyone is happy with their PS3 as a BD player. Days without a post is probably a good thing. Personally, nothing new has made my socks roll up and down so I'm pretty happy with mine. If I were to (step up) it would likely be a mega-changer. I can see putting the Oppo BDP-83 in my theater and in other rooms, but I'm not going to scratch and claw to be the first in line to get one. I'm really very satisfied with my PS3. It has performed extremely well since the CODEC firmware upgrades.

I'm satisfied with my PS3 and my Panny 35 too. So much so, that I turned down the offer to buy the Oppo last week.

You can go into the Device Settings and turn on the "Auto Off" for the controller, so it turns off after 15~ minutes. To turn it back on, hit the button in the middle.

That way it doesn't stay on for hours and need recharging all the time.

What do you guys think? I personally would love a cooler running, greener, bit-stream capable BD player.

Pffft. Those are fake. It's a bad Photoshop job. I mean, look at all that grain. And besides, anyone can fab pieces like that and make a mockup of a cardboard box....

On the plus side, at least they improved the looks of the thing. I may decide to replace my 40GB this xmas.

They added copy/paste. To me this is significant.

If are talking about the PS3 as a BluRay player then my highest priority for a firmware upgrade is to be able to read NTFS USB drives. Then I could author AVCHD without to format a drive FAT32 and carve up the large video files into 4G chunks

With the MultiAVCHD program, FAT32 limitation is a non-issue for me now.

MultiAVCHD is very cool, it retains loss-less audio, has great menus, and doesn't transcode the video.

Anyone having problems with the latest 2.76 download? I skipped 2.70 because of all the negative stuff I read--probably stupid, but just to be safe. How is 2.76 so far?

Thanks...
It adds cut and paste. And speeds up the trophy comparison some. Otherwise I have not noticed any changes. I have a feeling it may be a preload for some functions that will be revealed later. For example some integration with Home patch 1.21 coming in the next few weeks. Or so the rumors say.
I downloaded and installed 2.76 this morning and it went well -- no problems so far. For some reason the version I had been using was 2.6. Was that the previous version or had I missed one?

You missed 2.70.

I've had no problems with 2.76 (or 2.70) on my 40GB. Watched "Taken," played some Stardust HD, and watched a couple of episodes of Fringe via Hulu/PlayOn.

Noticed no differences.

Thanks guys. I have an older 80 GB. Hopefully it goes smoothly.

I thought I had missed at least one update, thanks for the confirmation.

What can you tell me about playon? Trying to use the PS3's browser for watching TV episodes from anywhere has ranged from difficult to impossible. With playon would I be able to watch full length episodes from the ABC, Fox, etc. on demand Web sites? I can't do it at all with just the PS3's browser. Even with Hulu it's a hit and miss situation. Some stuff will queue up but when it starts to play, I get audio with a black screen. Not good.

I'm using PlayOn primarily with Hulu and a wired network, and it works flawlessly. PlayOn currently has deals with Hulu, Netflix, CBS, ABC (not yet live) and some minor sources like YouTube, CNN, and ESPN. Hulu, of course, has Fox and NBC as well as an immense collection of archival TV and films. It all shows up in the XMB and can be accessed exactly the same way you would any other PS3 content. PlayOn is $40, one-time fee. I highly recommend you give the free 30-day trial a spin; it's a snap to install and configure.

Of course you need to have a computer turned on and running it, and the computer needs to be fast enough for the reatime transcoding. Any dual-core CPU will be fine.

I have compared about 5 different players now to the the PS3 and have ended up returning them all as the PS3 is still my favorite. The pq is pretty much equal to all of them and the aq is superb as well. Plus the PS3 is so fast and gets constant firmware upgrades. The PS3 is a complete beast! One of the best electronic devices ever made.
