I'm not sure if it's my TV, or the PS3. Sometimes I'll see it on a panning motion of the camera, other times it's surrounding a person simply on the screen talking with things moving behind him/her.

No problems like that here...

Hello, I have a question about my PS3. I have it connected via HDMI to my Yamaha Receiver. Whenever I play a game, the receiver says PSM instead of dolby digital or DTS or whatever. But when I play a Blu Ray, it says Dolby Digital or DTS.

Can anybody help me out with this?
That's because those games are creating PCM, not DD or DTS. Some Blu-Rays also have PCM tracks so when you select the PCM track on a Blu-Ray, your receiver will show PCM for that.

Turn OFF the "smoothmotion" or "motionflow" or "whatever " special effect your new set has.

It could also be that the sharpness setting on the TV is cranked up. Either way, the problem is almost definitely not the PS3 (unless it's defective).

What Ken said is correct. However some games will register DD or DTS on your receiver. Uncharted actually lets you choose which audio you want (DD, DTS, or LPCM) in the in-game setup menu. Whichever one you choose is what you will see displayed on your receiver. No matter which one you see lit up (this goes for any game) you'll be receiving a 5.1 audio track from the PS3 so not to worry.

I have a ps3 connected to a vh236H monitor through an HDMI cable. I usually watch movies with my AKG 701 headphones when using this Ps3 and my headphones are connected directly to the monitor.

It seems like usually the best sound available (like dts-hd 7.1) from my blu ray movies is being selected and was wondering if I need to change my ps3 to only use 2.1 sound or if it should be fine as is?

It doesnt seem like I'm losing sound but wanted to check.

Are you using a LED-LCD HDTV? If it has local dimming, then this is just a limitation of the TV's back light. Google local dimming halos. http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/04/h...local-dimming/

Nothing to do with the PS3.

A couple months ago I bought a blu-ray and watched it once, it played fine. Now it freezes every couple minutes. can a blu-ray just "go bad"? All the other discs play fine.

Did you try cleaning it? Sometimes if they become dirty that will happen. Wipe the BD and see if that helps.

No it's very clean, I don't get how this is happening.

Do you have a second player you can try it in to verify the problem is the disc? If not, a friends player maybe?
Nope no other players. Not sure whats going on here.

I have a launch model ps3 and lately it's been really acting funky. It'll freeze sometimes during movies and even during the menu (when I'm choosing a scene for example). I've checked multiple times and I have the latest firmware.

Is there anything else I can do or should I just assume it's dying?

Also, how does everyone find the dvd upscaling of the ps3? I know that's a weird question for someone who's had it for so long. Reason I'm asking is I just bought a new 60" plasma and while blurays look flat out amazing, regular dvds look ....awful. I never noticed before on my 42" but now that I have a larger tv it seems the flaws are really noticeable.

I don't want to buy a new ps3 if they're just bad upscalers. Would rather get the new Oppo or something.

Do you have the bd/DVD up scaler turned on? (under video settings). Upscaling on my old fat PS3 is VERY good on my 105" screen

I'd agree - my launch fat looks fantastic with dvd to my 50 inch kuro.

I have seen several "custom fit" cooling fan assemblies on the internet for the PS3. However most of them have received negative reviews, i.e. too noisy or don't move enough air. Can anyone recommend a set of auxiliary cooling fans for the PS3 that actually work but don't sound like a jet engine? I am trying to extend the life of my PS3 inside my system rack. The rack is vented, but heat does build up after a long movie or after gaming for hours.
I leave the door of my rack open when using the PS3...always...and get after wife and kids if they use it and leave the door closed. You need front AND back of rack open to allow good air exchange...

Don't by the Nyko unit that connects to the back of the unit! Doesn't move enough air AND sounds like a jet engine.

same thing happened to mine before it died completely. Its the bluray laser going bad. 150bux for sony to fix... year later it yellow lighted on me and I just ended up buying the slim.

I've been having a hard time deciding between something like a Roku box, a blue ray player with good streaming capabilities, Google TV, and a PS3. There's almost too many option to figure out which is best for me. But I've read that PS3 might adding Google TV. Seems like a natural since they already have a blue ray player with Google TV, and a stand alone Google TV box. I would run out right away and buy a PS3 if they did that. Does anyone have any insight, other than rumors, about whether Sony will be adding Google TV to the PS3?
I know this topic has been done to death, but I need to confirm.

From what I understand, while the PS3 (phat with HDMI 1.3a and slim with HDMI 1.3c) can do 3D, it sacrifices the lossless stream of DTS-HD or TrueHD to achieve it.

While some say that a future firmware can remedy this, I thought that actually impossible because this limitation is actually a hardware limitation of the old HDMI 1.3 chipsets being used. It can't send both 3D signals and lossless audio at the same time because of the bandwidth limitations.

So unless a newer model PS3 comes out with HDMI 1.4 standard (possibly the 3000-series), if you want 3D, you will sacrifice lossless audio...

My understanding is that it is not the 1.3 HDMI chipset but the 3D Blu-ray currently consumes all the resources of the PS3 therefore it cannot handle the additional task of HD audio. If Sony can optimize the code for the 3D decoding then HD audio may be possible.

Why do think playing movies would shorten the life of the PS3? Many of us use the PS3 ONLY for movies. My PS3 is the original fat unit, over three years old and I have had no issues with it.

Generally speaking, if you are playing a game you are using a Blu-ray disk same as watching a Blu-ray movie. Wear and tear should be the same. I too have a Fat (MGS) PS3 and never a problem, with LOTS of use.
Components wear if used. If you want something to last a long time don't use it. Then even if it breaks you won't know. I bought my PS3 to play games and watch Blu-ray movies and I am enjoying it. Also if it breaks it can be fixed.

This is probably a stupid question but does anyone know how to get out of the Netflix Streaming Menu without having to turn off the PS3? Thanks.

I found the answer to my question. I am using an IR2BT adapter and a Harmony 890 Pro Remote. I was able to add the power toggle command as a button and I can now use that to get out of the Netflix Streaming Menu. I labeled it Toggle as power toggle does not seem to be an appropriate name for it.
