i have my ps3 hooked up to a sony str dh810 and changed the settings and it decodes dts hd but will not do true hd..only does true hd in dolby digital...any ides why it does dts hd but not dolby true hd? thanks
post #30152 of 31995
does the disk that you are playing have a true-hd track?
I just purchased a new onkyo 707 to take advantage of the lossless formats. I'm using the ps3 for my br player.

I'm not getting dd true hd or dts ma on the display of the onkyo receiver. It's just displaying dts or dd.

Is there something i need to change in the settings of the ps3? I changed from optical to hdmi for audio and made that setting change in the ps3. My old proceed preamp didn't have hdmi so i had to use the optical.

Ideas?

Fat or slim PS3?
Probably fat, change the audio setting from bitstream to lpcm. You won't get the dtsma or ddhd lights on your amp because the ps3 is decoding the high def audio internally and sending it as multichannel to the onkyo, the sound is identical to if the onkyo was decoding. If it's a slim ps3 bitstream should work and the onkyo will decode the hd codecs.

However, I am interested in the new PS3 models, not the older ones.

So this power switch change in the new models has not affected the way the unit is controlled remotly?

About to get a PS3. I just wanted to conform you can use the PS3 as a bridge from your computer to your TV, to view pictures and video from your computer, stream internet video to your TV and as a way to use your TV as a second monitor (basically an expensive RGB to HDMI switch)

my ps3 will decode dts hd but not true hd it just plays it in dolby digital...hurt locker will play in dts hd but i am legend and body of lies only gets decoded
in dolby digital...any thoughts?...u have to pick it on the disc before u play the movie?

^^^

yes, on many disks, the default is NOT the high-rez codec, you have to select it...
What type of hard drive does the slim have and whats the largest hd it can support? Thanks

laptop form factor sata drive... 9.5 mm maximum drive height...

likely whatever you can fit...

Hi guys,

I need to buy a Blu Ray 3d, I was thinking about buying the Samsung BD C6900, but then I was wondering that I can spend a couple of bucks more and get a PS3 to use as blu ray player and play some exclusive games.

So how is his performance as a blu ray player 3D?

And upscaling dvds?

The set would be Samsung PN50C7000, Denon 391XP and the PS3.
I have a ps3 launch fat that feeds a new denon 591 and pioneer kuro plasma and am constantly amazed by the blue ray quality, upscaled dvds, netflix, hd games. It is really the best deal in home theater today. I'm buying a new slim for my other kuro panel because I'm THAT impressed. You can buy better dedicated devices (ie oppo bd, media center pc etc) but nothing in one box that does everything the ps3 does. As far as 3d there is currently a limitation that the ps3 can do 3d video and core dd or dts but not 3d and dtshd /ddthd at the same time. May be fixed in firmware but no guarentee.

Thnx Paul,

And how is the 3D on the PS3?

Yes, you can. You'll need to install media server software on to the computer. Something like PS3 Media Server or Vuze will work. They are both free and easy to use.

Both of the titles you named are Warner Bros. titles. With WB TrueHD titles (that I've encountered) you have to go to the discs set up menu to choose Dolby TrueHD. Otherwise it will default to Dolby Digital. I know this is the case for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and I have heard it's the same on I am Legend.

On WB DTS-HD MA titles (Terminator: Salvation, Watchmen) it will default to DTS-HD MA track.

And the upscaling is it good?

I don't think you can use the PS3 as "basically an expensive RGB to HDMI switch" if you're thinking that you will see the PC desktop ala Windows Remote Desktop. What I did is connect the PC directly to the TV using HDMI.

The player has no real effect on 3D - assuming the player's 2D is decent and the PS3 has exceptionally decent 2D performance.

The player simply delivers the 1s and 0s to the display. A 3D "frame" (one left-eye image plus 1 right-eye image) is simply a little larger than a single 2D frame. The 3D player simply delivers those slightly larger frames - if it does 2D frames (a single 1920x1080 frame for both eyes) well, 3D frames are equally good. The TV separates the left-eye data and right-eye data and reconstructs the full 1080p image for each eye then displays them sequentially.

The biggest variable in 3D right now is the glasses - they make or break 3D. If the shutters don't get dark enough when they are closed, image information for the opposite eye will leak through the shutters and create visible crosstalk/ghosting in the 3D images. Glasses also have a color tint to them when they are turned on and different brands have different color tints. Right now, glasses are so crude, that 2 pair or even the 2 lenses in a single pair can be different enough to produce significantly different measurements.

Perhaps I misunderstood his question but it didn't sound to me like he was asking if he'll be able to see Windows on his TV.

When he said "use your TV as a second monitor" I took it to mean that he'd be able to view all the stuff he mentioned that he keeps on his computer (pictures and video) on his TV (hence making it a second monitor) using the PS3 to send from one to the other, and he can do that.

He never said anything about viewing the Windows desktop or actually running the OS on the TV. If that's what he meant by "switch" he wasn't clear. And if he thought there was a possibility it could do that, I can't imagine where he could have gotten that idea from.

I have a 3808 as well and have the fat but I think the slim is the only new PS3 you can get now as its the latest revision.

No more fats (discontinued), unless you buy maybe used or rebuilt. And yes, audio great on both, although the fat could not bitstream the HD uncompressed.
I own both a new slim and a launch fat and the only differences I've found is the fat cannot bitsteam hd audio-so it decodes internally and sends to denon as multichannel pcm. Of note for netflix users who stream over wireless- the wifi in the slim works far better than the fat. Also the fan runs far less in the slim (is there even a fan?)Overall the slim is the better unit and well worth every penny.
I have a 60g fat and would be reluctant to swap for a thin because I would lose sacd playback and to a lesser extent miss the ability to play ps2 games.

I am quite happy with the ps3 decoding the hd audio.

Mostly I would browse media residing on my computer and on my mediasmart server. But I was hoping there was some software avaiable that was able to enable the PS3 to control my computer through the network then output it as HDMI for my TV (what I meant by "second monitor")
(My computer does not have HDMI out, and I was hoping to avoid purchasing a powered HDMI "switch" (monoprice item 4929 http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2 )

Hey guys i NEED some help PLEASE. I have a ps3 fat i bought back in the end of 2008. Its been hooked up to my hc720 projector through hdmi. To me it always looked great for blu-rays and games. Ive had the pj and ps3 hooked up together since '08 cuz i bought the 2 together. Ive noticed a small amount of graininess or noise on live action but not much and none at all on animated or cgi movies (Cars, Christmas Carol, Toy Story). Well last week i bought the new Epson HC8350 1080p projector and hooked it up to my ps3 and i noticed alot of real noticeable graininess/noise/fuzz on more than one live action movies especially on faces and light and dark backgrounds but not a single bit of bad on cgi/animated which look kiler. I thot it was suppose to be crystal clear like on the tvs at b.b and hgregg but its not. So i hooked my ps3 back up to my 720 pj and noticed the graininess in the same spots but just not as bad. I then decided to take my projector back bcuz i thot it was bad. Last nite i got my new one and i hooked it up and the same thing. So then i hooked my ps3 up to Samsung 720p plasma and noticed the graininess on it also. So 3 pjs and 1 tv cant be wrong. I even went out a bought an exspensive new hdmi cord thinking that would help. So i would REALLY APPRECIATE any and all help you could give to help me solve this issue bcuz now i think something is wrong with my ps3. THANK YOU in advance.

Did you set the PS3 to output 1080?
