Can't think of a good reason TO get a PS3 instead of a stand-alone in this day and age. Can't even think of a reason to spend $200 on a stand-alone player.
(My opinion will probably not be very popular in this thread).

Well I don't see a problem with missing IR in PS3 because if you get PS3 blu-ray remote controller it works via bluetooth and it is excellent and no need to point it towards player. I've used that remote so long that I can use it in total darkness.
This Slim model does not look big to me. It is often equal or a bit slower than my Panasonic standalone player (40 vs 50 seconds) but in some titles the PS3 is a lot faster. Slim models are not that noisy either. I don't see what is complicated in PS3, once you check couples of settings it works like any standalone player. I don't think power consumption is any problem especially with current Slim models. I just got one and measured it myself and it is only around 70w. It is about the same as old fashion light bulb. in my opinion DVD upconversion is pretty nice but it definitely has different look than many standalone player that use simplier scaling algorithms. Some peoples say it is much better than standalone player. In PS3 they are using more sophisticated edge adaptive scaling method which needs powerful cpu.

I ended up getting another PS3 for my main blu-ray player because it is so nice to use, it has very fast interface, it supports every title and is updated frequently and blu-ray image is as good as it can be (there are only few players that do everything right and the PS3 is one of them).

If I have to pay $50 to use it with a universal remote, no thanks. I understand that the bluetooth remote exists, but I will not use more than one remote for my home theater. Haven't done it in 10 years, and am not about to start now. If sony was serious about wanting people to use the PS3 in a home theater, they'd have added a 25 cent IR receiver like every other home theater component in existence.

This is what I mean by complicated. To watch netflix on a stand-alone player, I press one button on my remote. On PS3, I have to navigate to the app, which takes several steps and several seconds by the time you boot up and log in.

Power consumption difference is huge. My standalone player uses 11W. That amounts to about $1US/month less, which is enough to rent a DVD.

It is fast, I'll give you that. But it's a terrible fit for my home theater for the above reasons plus the lack of streaming apps. It's also an odd shape and size, relegating it to the top of the stack of components in my rack, which isn't a good place for it. I'm glad to finally be rid of mine and don't see any compelling reason to ever buy another.

I would say get one. I plan to get another one if this one ever dies. You can get a BT remote for about 20 and that does everything that any other remote would do. I must admit that I am not into this "one remote rules them all" camp. I am quite happy to pick up and put down a remote to turn on the TV/amp/AVR etc.

As to how it looks in a rack, I really don't care how it looks. I am more interested in the film, when the thing is on, and not really looking at the rack when it's not. And if we're going to watch a film lasting anywhere up to 3 hours or so, then why care about a few extra seconds for it to start and get there?

It's not looks I'm concerned about. It's cramming all my components into the small space I have. Putting the PS3 on top of the pile makes it really hard to access and operate. If it were cube shaped like everything else, I could put it in a better spot.

Life's too short to juggle remotes and press a dozen buttons to accomplish a simple task when you can do it all with a $5 remote and a minuscule amount of programming. And if I have a choice to press one button or a dozen to watch Netflix, I'll go for the one-button solution.

Well these things are obviously matter of taste.
I'm not a big universal remote fan. I rather use products own remotes for many reasons, one of the biggest is that I want to have all functions available and I like to fiddle with settings often. I hate those press one button for turning on tv and powering up an avr and start a player.
Remote controller Sony sell separately for PS3 is superior to IR remote because you don't have to point it towards player, and it feels pretty solid too.

It surely consume more power than those one chip wonder entry level players, but when you compare it to high end players it consume less than double.
Also if you compare PS3 power consumption to other house appliances or simple room lightning you see it is really neglible.

A matter of taste perhaps. But, my universal has hundreds more commands available than my OEM remotes, especially for my AVR which can have several hundred discrete commands, and they're all clearly labeled and easy to put in macros or on any button or screen I want. RF works just as well as bluetooth, no aiming required. And it works for everything, not just my PS3. A given task in my system may take a dozen or more commands. I would go crazy (if my family didn't kill me first) if I had to do all that manually every time. With the complexity of today's home theaters, I don't see how people can stand not having universal remotes.

I'm having a problem with my PS3 blu ray playback. I have the 60GB "fat" PS3 connected to a Pioneer Elite VSX-42 that's connected to an LG 47LS4600 LED tv (all HDMI). For some reason when I play blu rays I have red and blue pixels popping up on the screen. The odd part is that the problem doesn't occur during video games or when navigating the XMB interface. I also have a uverse box connected to the receiver and no issues during playback. I know it's not the cables. Like i said since it doesnt happen during games it has me really stumped. I've attached some images from Shutter Island Blu Ray.

We all have our own priorities.

For me, the PS3 bluetooth remote is a very big plus. If all my other equipment reacted as flawlessly to remote commands as the PS3, I'd be very happy.

Do I need an Optical Cable for SS on my PS3?

I was told I need an optical cable to get surround sound while watching movies on my PS3. I haven't hooked it up yet, but currently only have an HDMI cable to use from the PS3 to the receiver. Do I need an optical cable or is the HDMI cable all that is necessary?

This is my Home Theater setup:

Panasonic 55ST50
Denon 1613
PS3
Energy Take 5
PSW10 Polk Sub

Let me guess, Best Buy rolleyes.gif. No, you do not need one. Check post 2 in the FAQ thread for setup.

Hmm, this intrigues me. Does the PS3 truly upscale DVD movies? And really better than stand alone models - the 2 in particular interest to me (and affordable), Sony S790 and Panasonic BDT500? Would love an Oppo 103, but at near $500, ouch!

Also, would the PS3 perform any PQ "magic" on the streaming movies, like NetFlix?

One thing to keep in mind though, is rumors that the PS4 may come out in 2013. Wonder what that might bring? eek.gif

Try switching HDMI cables. Are any of your HDMI cables longer than 2 meters? My guess is that you're transmitting higher bandwidth video from Blu-ray than from the other sources. Try reducing color. In particular, if your ps3 is set for Deep Color output, turn it off. If possible, also configure the PS3 and AVR to output 1080p24 from Blu-rays. These two things will keep 2D Blu-ray playback at 75 MHz, and should eliminate the dropouts in your image, without the slightest bit of image quality reduction.

Hi Guys, I posted this question on the PS3 FAQ thread but no replies.

I have the 250 GB PS3 slim.

I have 2 questions/issues:

1. If my Pioneer SC-2112K AVR has better outboard upscaling, what should be my video settings be on the PS3 to optimize DVD resolution?
2. After updating the Netflix over the internet, the PS3 would open the new update but then reset (turn off, then turn on). This cycles until I have exit out of Netflix. Other video channels working ok. Anyone else having this issue and if not, is there a way I can revert to the older netflix version?

Thanks in advance guys!

Hello Everyone,

Quick question. Lately when playing blu-rays on the PS3 the audio sometimes drops out for a split second and then comes back. Along with this, the audio becomes out-of-sync. The more frequently the audio drops out the worse the sync problem becomes. Has anyone else every seen this? Any input?

My setup: PS3 via HDMI to Denon 1911 via HDMI to Panny 65ST30.

Thanks!

Now that you mention it, noticed the same issue with a rental version of Total Recall Bluray. I have not noticed it before, but struggled with it throughout the entire movie. I would hit the audio button, scrolling though the various audio tracks and it would sync up. I used the ps3 with a Anthem D2v.
Watching a rental copy of Total Recall blu-ray is what drove me to post something. The audio fade in/out and the syncing was horrendous. I wonder what about the audio for this movie cause this to happen?
Check out the blu-ray movies section here. It is a known documented problem with the Total Recall movie. The Dolby TrueHD audio has dropouts if using bitstream out. Change it to LPCM is the fix for now.

For those who use the PS3 as a 3d blu ray.. Like it or hate it?

I use it. I have the fat 20gig and a Vivitek Qumi with the 3DFury and I love it.

I got one of the latest design PS3's for Christmas and I was wondering if there are any differences, (pro or con) for using this as a Blu-Ray player, versus BOTH the older style PS3's, as well as versus the BDP-S580 that was my primary Blu-Ray player. Thanks!

I get loud "pops" everytime the PS3 is starting to play a movie. It's the old 40GB model and I'm sending the audio as PCM over HDMI to a Pioneer VSX-2021. Any ideas how to get rid of it?
I do stream quite a lot of music across my network using PS3 Media Server
320k or so mp3 quality, and have wondered how the quality stacks up against
some of the newer BD Players with newer DAC's and electronics....

any thoughts on this?

I have loud pops with my Pioneer 1121 which may be caused by an HDMI handshake issue. Not sure if that is the same thing that is happening to you. The folks in the 1121 thread said it could be caused my using ALC mode and recommended that I unplug the 1121 for 10 seconds or so. You could try that to see if it helps.

I have used the Logitech Harmony 1100 and am now using the Harmony One. They are pricey but do work great.

I personally consider that an acceptable all in one because it can't do macros. I'd just get the $8 nyko on that page. Then you can use its IR dongle with any remote. So you're not limited to a mediocre bluetooth remote. There are a couple of downsides though. You have to aim, and the dongle can't power on the PS3. For that, you need an expensive IR-Bluetooth adapter. If you don't care about macros, the blu-link is fine. I personally just use HDMI CEC from my regular IR universal remote and don't use bluetooth or a dongle at all. That option is completely free. That won't give you every single function, but you get the important ones for disc playback and navigation.
Harmony ONE plus Nyko dongle = WINNA!
I have used Harmony remotes for 9 years. Thus, when the Logitech Harmony Adapter for PS3 was introduced, I immediately bought one. The first adapter died last year and I replaced with another. Even now, you have to pay at least $50 for the Logitech Harmony Adapter but one of them is well worth it for anyone who already uses a Harmony remote or is planning to buy one. Thanks to the adapter, my Harmony H659 (cheap and old) can replicate all 51 functions of the PS3 game controller but can also control every other component in my home theater. Highly, highly recommended!

I've been using Harmony remotes for @13 years. I bought they $12 Nyko dongle for my PS3 to use w/the Harmony remote and it's never failed in the 3+ years I've had it. While it can't turn on your PS3 that doesn't matter since the PS3 turns on when you put the disc in (movie or game).
