I updated my PS3 to version 1.54 and the freezing still takes place when I watch Blu Ray movies. (disabling the network connection does fix this problem)
for those of you having flicker or no picture at all via PS3 and HDMI..upon my initial setup PS3->Pioneer Elite 72Txi -> Sony 40XBR2 all HDMI I wasn't getting anything. (HDMI error)
to fix I turned the PS3 on standby (switch in back to ON) then hold the power button down on top of the PS3 until you hear the 2nd beep and then it re-syncs HDMI with the receiver. After that I have had no image problems....
only downside is the Pioneer receiver only does 1080i pass through....but the TV compensates for this just fine!
PS3 is a great product. I don't even own a game yet! Free game downloads (demos) from the playstation store are a great feature

Thanks for the input, but I have already tried that. It has always worked 1080i for me, the problem is around the 1080p handshake when the receiver is supposed to, and does, pass through other 1080p input.

I enjoy that too. So much cheaper than renting from your local movie shop.
well I just ran into my first blueray problem with PS3. The movie Chronos will not play properly on the PS3, gives error 80029907. Guess it is a known problem, see the below thread. I got the disk from Blockbuster online.
Someone in another forum suggested that the wifi-freezing link is due to the PS3 logging off the wifi connection, and then causing the playback problems during its attempts to log back on.
He was looking into forcing it to keep the connection active rather than dropping it. Has anyone tried something like that, since just turning off wifi is an inconvenient work around? I don't have my PS3 yet to investigate.

It takes about 5 seconds to disable the Network and another five to enable it. Anyway tonight my second movie (as did the first) after 1.54 (with Network enabled) played back flawlessly. I don't think I made it through any with 1.50 and 1.51 without disabling the network.
If that's the case (and it certainly sounds like it's a workable theory that's easy enough to test), you shouldn't even have to disable the network right? Just make sure you're not logged in...
You know, it's a strange thing, this 720p BD playback affair, because apparently it was enabled on japanese ps3s with fimware 1.00, but then it was disabled in every subsequent firmware version, as far as i know.
And the thing that makes me angry is that since this thing happened, Phil Harrison has been interviewed a million times, and not one gaming journalist has ever asked him about this.
Jedu, i'm back to my 1080p flickering/blinking mess.
I was able to play Flyboys for a while at 1080p and Resistance, but I did not check the input resolution on the tv. No flickering whilst playing, but as soon as I got main to the main menu (always forget the real name for it) it went batty again. Playing downloaded trailers, batty. Not sure. Will be rearranging the entire system today due to painters coming in tomorrow. Will test again later in week.
UPDATE: Flyboys input to TV was 1080p. Resistance input to TV was 720p. For some odd reason, my receiver was saying no signal and there was no sound, but picture, while on the dashboard. During that time, there was no flickering. When I played a BD and bounced back to the dashboard, the sound was back, and the flicker. Some people and a few articles have made comments about the whole sound AND video passthrough may be the reason for some of these errors, but I am unsure what to think at this point.
To give a glimpse of Sony's new outlook on sharing their inner workings with the world, Harrison gives an example of how they might phrase the information they release. "We could say, 'You know, we're not sure when it's coming, but we're going to have DVD up-scaling on PlayStation 3.' There you go. There's a scoop for you."
Now, that didn't exactly sound like an enthusiastic announcement to me, and it seemed pretty vague. In fact, upon further reading, one could argue that that wasn't an announcement but rather a hypothetical situation that Harrison was referencing. Alsmost seems as if they never PLANNED to have dvd-upscaling, but have toyed with the idea since release and are now committed to coming through with it. Stay tuned, I guess.

Hey Jedu could you repost your setup? What kind of receiver are you using? What display?
I have a Sony Tiniton Wega hooked to my PS3 via an HDMI/DVI cable. The model number is KV-36hs510. When displaying in 1080i mode there is a pink bar going left to right on my screen. I saw a tread that talks about this, but I never found a fix. Most every post talked about the sony XBRs. Id hate to think that after spending all this cash on a ps3(half the reason being for the blue ray) that I can only display them in 480p since they dont display in 720p. Does anyone know if there is a fix for this. It really screws with the color. Ive done every ground loop, cable, and settings fix I can with no luck. Any new input on these TVs or work arounds so I can see BD in hi def?
ps. i posted in the crt tv thread as well, but it looks like its been dead for nearly 2 months.

Until you actually try a firmware 1.00 Japanese PS3!

Jeff,
Found your post about the "Chronos (Blu-ray)" - PS3 issue when doing a search on this thread.
Thanks for the heads-up contact information.
Sent my e-mail to R&B Films for a replacement disc.
How do you guys have your PS3 audio set up when using hdmi for Truehd audio?
I set mine to HDMI but under the linear audio selections for pcm there are many khz settings, which one did you use?
If you're not sure, just set it at automatic. The PS3 will determine what sampling rate your receiver can handle and make the choice for you. You can review the settings before it is finalized.
My ps3 disables my tv's option for film mode when powered on. Does this happen to anyone else?
Film mode is a selectable feature on any other situation or connection (hd dvd, cable etc.) but when I try to enable it for blu ray movies on the ps3 on I lose the ability to select it.

Isn't that mode related to the deinterlacing method used? With progressive output (such as 1080p) there's no deinterlacing to do. Does that work with 720p?

You are absolutely right. Switching the PS3 to 1080i enabled the film mode and disabled it on 720p and 1080p.
Before now I didn't realize we wouldn't need film mode with 1080p. Cool.
I've got me a brand new Sony KDS-50A2000 and my PS3 and an older receiver with 2 Optical Inputs.
I can't get the Video to run through HDMI and Audio through Optical. I've tried all the options I know...The Video Works perfect, but no sound through the optical to the receiver.
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but here is some old, but interesting, information in regards to the PS3's current and future A/V functionality.

It's still not enough for TV and theater projectors that can display the original YCrCb stored in BD and DVD. For example the current PS3 player lacks gradation in brighter and darker parts of pictures when compared to Panasonic DMP-BD10. The reason why the internal processing is done in RGB is because RSX can't have 2 color spaces at the same time. Honda suspects they used RGB for the player because in the prototype design they planned to overlay XMB in RGB onto the picture of BD/DVD. In the final design XMB is not overlayed onto the player.
Actually Kutaragi also ordered the development of the version with YCrCb internal processing at the final review. In the firmware version released in December [2006] it becomes possible for a user to choose RGB or YCrCb.
The current player converts interlace to progressive only for SD movies. Right now SCE developers are working to improve DVD picture quality after they implemented YCrCb. After that it's planned to do something for 1080i to 1080p conversion. Though the RAM size can be an obstacle for it, SCE developers say they can do it by splitting the load between Cell and RSX.
Quote:
Currently there are complaints from users about non-existent DVD upscaling in the PS3. As for the interlace-to-progressive conversion before upscaling, the current player has it already. There was a team at the division for broadcast equipments at Sony that does research for improving image quality by using the NVIDIA shader language. They ported it onto RSX. After Cell does noise reduction and other filters, RSX does interlace-to-progressive conversion. Though the current algorithm has bugs for some video sources, SCE says the conversion precision will be upgraded by future updates. Also the noise reduction filter is currently optimized for video sources with relatively many MPEG noises recorded with a video recorder. SCE knows lack of picture details because of it and will provide new default values for noise reduction by checking recording formats and media IDs for DVD discs. As for upscaling, they are doing the research to develop a high-quality multi-tap upscaling filter that balances the load between Cell and RSX. They also plan to use the non-original luminance information generated in upscaling for HDMI 1.3 deep color.

SCE declared that they'd support 1080/24p in the PS3.
What really piqued my curiosity was this:

Anyone care to further elaborate on this statement? What is that they're trying to do, and how? What does this mean for consumer's with HDMI 1.3 compatible displays? Deep Color and the x.v.YCC color space are independent, correct?
