A lot of shows are doing this - they'll probably end up grouping all of them. I wonder how this will look on hardware like the PS3.

anybody know why redbox doesn't have Unstoppable on bluray? They have it on DVD only.

that's interesting, because if you go to redbox.com, unstoppable isn't listed as a BD title, period i.e. it's not available anywhere as a bluray. I usually have no problems getting anything that's listed on their site as bluray.

Watched the remake of I Spit on Your Grave last night and I have to say that it's the CRAZIEST movie I've ever seen! I never saw the original but I would highly recommend the new version to anyone that likes horror movies. You won't be disappointed!

Well...my local BB finally announced that it's closing, so it looks like it's off to Netflix for me. I'll miss the in-store exchanges, but the streaming will be nice. Picked up some really cheap BD videos at the fire sale, though.

My neighborhood BB is still open by some miracle, although it doesn't have many employees anymore.

Speaking of Redbox, it bailed me out the other day. I have wanted to See Winter's Bone because of the Oscar nominated performance by its young star, Jennifer Lawrence. Oddly, BB didn't pick up Winter's Bone on BD, although they have still been adding most other new BD releases. Fortunately, I found the BD edition at a Redbox kiosk that is across the street from my neighborhood BB. It was a well spent $1.50. Winter's Bone is a fine film, thoughtful and filled with fine performances.

I picked up Winter's Bone when it first came out on a whim .. it is an excellent film ..

The BB I used closed last year .. they opened a couple of kiosks .. then, yesterday I decided to give them some business and the kiosks had disappeared as well ..

I don't know how viable an alternative Redbox will be to BB when BB finally goes belly up but I will try using them for awhile at least. I'm afraid that over time Redbox's BD selection is unlikely to be any better than NF's. NF does seem to be buying the BD editions of most recent films but systematically passes over recently released BD editions of classic films and of TV series. It's a mess is what it is.

Unfortunately, the RB BD selection over the last few month has been dismal at best .. it has been actually worse than NF, if you can believe that ..

I had never used Redbox until earlier this week so don't really know much about their inventory. It is becoming more and more likely, though, that when BB finally fails I will have to hold my nose and go back to NF and pay its Blu-ray premium, again. Talk about deja vu all over again.
Redbox is better in the bigger cities, I think. The inventory gets passed around better (you can return discs to any Redbox.) At least out here. Once in a while I have to make a trek for a disc, but not often. And sometimes if I wait a bit, it makes its way to me.

If you are up at 5 past Midnight on Tuesday, you can reserve online and pickup that day .. it's usually what I do and I've never not gotten a disk ..
Yeah, I've done that, too. I have the Redbox app on my Droid phone. Usually though I don't want to watch it on Tuesday unless I have the day off.

Mainly, though, it depends on where a disc is at and if I'm going to be near that Redbox. Not every Redbox here gets every new release. Especially the low-budget horror films that are my drug of choice. If it's in the SF Valley west of the 405, I'll probably reserve it and go get it. If it's in, say, Silver Lake, I'll wait until I have a reason to truck over there, or just see if it makes its way to the Valley (it usually does.)

I got a really bad vibe from the BB I was just at, and they also came clean on the current shortage of titles, in terms of quantity of each release. Until recently I was getting new releases in the mail on the day they were released, now it's like they are emptying my queue from the bottom up and the copies are all checked out at the store.

For me, I think it's time to investigate DirectV Cinema, considering the lack of 28 day waiting period and cool phone app programming of the DVR.

I'm sure that due to the Bankruptcy, most suppliers are reluctant to grant any credit to BB, so they are on COD ..

If they would offer a subscription with a monthly charge, I might be interested, but not at those prices per 24hr rental.

FWIW, the studios actively discourage streaming subscription rentals. I seriously doubt that we'll ever see another large-scale subscription rental service for anything other than 3rd-tier movies and TV shows. The studios pretty much insist on per-view fees for anything else. Even Starz and Showtime are pulling streaming content from Netflix that's "too new". The only thing a consumer can do is to support those services that offer the best price and terms.

Yep .. and on older top tier films .. my only gripe is the cost .. you want a HD feed from VUDU, pony up $6 bucks .. pretty much the same on PPV ..

How much is it? The DirectV site says start enjoying thousands of shows and movies on DIRECTV CINEMA, all at no extra charge once you upgrade the receiver to DVR and I am assuming pay for the wireless gear I would need in my theater.

Also, the Netflix website, makes it look like the 7.99 is for unlimited movie streaming - is that correct? Are the movies 1080 and 5.1 yet?

Netflix is $7.99 for unlimited streaming, though 1080 and 5.1 is limited to just a few (1?) devices and not too many movies at this time. Don't know anything about DirecTV Cinema.

You can get some good stuff if you subscribe to the premiums, but to get any HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax etc... On-demand you have to sub to the package, you'll break $100 a month easy to get all the free stuff, the VOD without some type of premium subscription is pretty lame, you don't have hardly any if any of the network shows on demand. I've never been impressed with their selection on Directv.

Yeah, 5.1 for just the PS3 right now IIRC. I think other devices have the capability, but it's not offered yet.

I could be wrong (as I dopn't own a PS3), but I think that, while they can get 5.1, so far NF isn't offering anything in 1080. At least Vudu is 1080p and Dolby Digital Plus. As far as I know, they are the only service offering that...and you don't need a PS3.

Yes, you are wrong. 1080p on the PS3 for some titles (seems to be growing relatively quickly though).

Vudu tends to be better quality and has more recent movies of course....but then again it's much more expensive, so I would expect them to.

Figured that might be a good deal for those of you who don't have Neflix yet. I used it myself today to get my sub. If you sign up through this site StudentRate - Deal / Netflix Student Discounts they send you a $10 check, which makes your first month free. I think you might need to be a student with a .edu address to sign up but not sure.

Well, looks like Dish Network is going to use Blockbuster as an entry point into online delivery.

AppleKraze thanks for posting that discount. I've been looking to try Netflix for a while. I'll have to check it out.
