Official Owner Thread - Pioneer Elite VSX-72TXV

Ladies & gents, allow me to steal the honor to making this an official thread. (I know 110% sure that I'm not the first who bought this model).

I got the Unit last night, it is now sitting on the rack where the 10+ yrs old Yammi A-2070 used to sit. I've had it partially hooked up (just the DVD & LD for now) but has not (yet) started singing -- I still need to "config" the speakers and run the MCACC.

This is only my SECOND receiver, ever. The A-2070 was bought way back in 1994, and I can only compare the new 72 with it. Many moons ago, I was an "audio only" guys, used to run on seperates, (my Mark Levison still still in the basement). Life & priorities change when babies came along, 1994 was my first year in the AV Receiver land.... so pls excuse my ignorant in the latest / newer AV world ... I am obviously out-dated , I am just a NOOB!

Anyway, point of interest ((initial / visual):
* to my surprise my A-2070 is heavier than it.. probably old tech components vs new tech components... and different transformer. Dimensionally they are almost identical.

* Manual suggests it need min 8" space (on the top side) for cooling purpose. I had to rearrange the rack-partition ... wife gave me face

* comparing to the A-2070 design of yester-year, the 72 is EXTREMELY easy to hook up, the arrangement on the back panel is very logical & well spaced out. It is a BREEZE to hook up the DVD and LD. I bought some Optical cables last night, boy... they simplify the effort and less-messy cables in the back.

* Wow .. I can name my own connections, no more "is XBox on VCR1 or VCR2"? or "is LD on SAT or TV?"

* I am only on 5.1, am so glad that I can use the Surr-Back circuit to bi-amp my fronts.

anyway ... will post & share further info / impression after everything is set up ... like all amps does, it can use some to hours to run in.

Later ...

Kick ass! I am really glad you made this thread. Mine is out for delivery today (in silver) and will post some impressions when I get a chance.

Last night I finished wiring the rest of the room, have all the speaker wires terminated, cleaned up the wiring behind my television, put the sub in position, and am just awaiting the Pioneer. Hookup sounds easy, and I should be able to catch some American Idol for music and some Lost for hopefully some intense action! I have been archiving some HD feeds on my DVR of some movies and will give a couple of those a go too.

Can't wait to give it a shot! Have you fired yours up yet?

Got mine a week or so ago, but it is still sitting in my foyer. I'll be painting my room this weekend, so hopefully within the next two weeks I can get it rolling. The anticipation is killing me.

Could someone tell me how the iPod on screen interface on the 72/74 works. Can you access playlist and/or other ipod features? A screen shot of the osd would be great. Thanks.

Day 2 Update:

I have my 72 all set up (aka connected) last night. DVD is Sony E-7700, optical audio for sound. Ran the auto MCACC, played Saving Private Ryan (in DTS)....

The effect is DAY & NIGHT comparing with my old Yamaha A-2070.. I almost ducked for the bullets (yeah, I do spiced it up a little... )

I have not (yet) started playing / tweaking around all the available settings (there are so many...) to pefect it for my "play room". Time will come...

I wish the Remote has a jog dial .. it could have made editing text mucho easier.. ..of course, we can opt NOT to customize the text (e.g. connection names, radio station names, etc,, ).

Good to hear it is working out for you. Mine is still in the foyer...

Gonna take a couple days off next week, and should be able to make enough headway in the basement that I can start rigging things up.

Check the Ultimate AV review for the 74 where it describes the interface. 72 is just lower FMS output, otherwise the same.

Jack, 74 has iLink, which is not found in 72. Some people wants/needs it, some don't.

Wagon Man.,

Any word on the ipod controll?
How's the onscreen interface? Is it well thought out is it just a play, pause,ff,rwd, skip kind of thing?

nasser, here are some screen shots on iPod interface: VSX-72TXV pics

Pls note that once they are connected, 72 takes full control of the iPod, available thru OSD are contents related, all other iPod features are no longer available (i.e. no longer needed anyway...). I use Dension Ice>Link PLus to listen my iPod in my car, once connected, IceLink takes full control (via the stock mutli-function steering wheel or the stock HeadUnit). This is no different than Ice>Link.

As you can see from the pic, the screens are simple yet straight forward, all done via the Remote of the 72TXV.

I also like to point out that it is quite fast to these two devices to recognize each other. Also, once connected, the iPod LCD shows "Pioneer".

Gotta catch some sleep now. Later...

Great! Thanks Wagon Man! I like it. It's not the most beautiful interface but it's very much in the same vein as the actual ipod interface. I can't wait to get mine!

Yeah, I have to say I'm a tad disappointed in the interface. Could have been a little nicer and with some colour. It looks almost old arcade-like.

HI There,
Want to pick up one this elite model on my next visit to the states in july , Can anyone tell me if it will pass 1080p via the HDMI sockets?
Are there any other issues with bringing one back to the UK apart from transformer issues that i already have sorted.
They don't do elite models in the uk and same spec would cost me twice as much seen these advertised in New York for $739
Thanks for any advice you guys can give me.

Does anyone know of an AV receiver that has a much nicer iPod interface-display?

I don't know. And I thought people "listen" to iPod, and not "watch" iPod? Will this "iPod interface" sway your purchase decison?

But of course, each of its own ...

The interface is part of the reason iPods blow away all other competitors.

I dont care what the hell the screen looks like on my tv...All I know is that it sounds great to me through the Pioneer..

Id rather have that than something that looks cool, but sounds like a$$

Exactly .. and that's why many people (myself included) don't care to listen to the iPod while we have CD / DVD at home to listen to .... except during occasions which call for a jukebox.

Still waiting for somebody on this thread to post a more detailed account of their thoughts on the 72. I finally got mine and will give it a full workout tomorrow! I'll be posting my thoughts and observations throughout the weekend.

Well, haven't been able connect my 72 to my main system. I couldn't wait so I hooked it up to a pair of JBL Northridge N24 speakers I had laying around, connected my U2 ipod, and used an old 14" tv as a monitor!

Anyways, all I can say is wow! You wouldn't think you could get much out of such a bad set up buy It sounded really good! I listened using pure direct 96khz stereo and the detail and clarity was excellent considering the source. I listened to the best quality files I have and I could already hear a lot of instruments and sounds much clearer than when I listen to the cd version on my current system!
I will say that the iPod interface is a bit slow but not too bad.
Another thing that I didn't really like was that the heat sink isn't made of a single block but, instead the fins are attached the sink main plate! Lets hope it is true and this baby isn't a heater!

I will have it connected by tomorrow and then I'll really see what it can do with movies/music and run the MCACC. I'm happy and think its going to sound great with my main speaker setup (4x Energy C-3', C-C3 center, & PB-10 sub)
I just installed my system last night. I ran the MCACC auto sound setup before I recieved my sub. Do I need to run the setup again since I have added a sub?

My 74 barely gets warm when I have it cranked in stereo at reference or near reference levels for long periods of time. I'm using Polk RTi8's as my mains. I think these receivers are underrated as for having a so called weak amp section.
