The majority of Wal Mart shoppers are not warehouse shoppers. There are not that many who will pay "fees" to belong to a shopping "club."
I suspect that the Wal Marts in your town are a lot nicer/newer than where I live (Tucson, AZ). The run down, under-stocked Wal Marts here are not going to be burying anybody
any time soon. My local WM does not even have one single LCD or plasma! These stores do not have the room to stock a decent selection of TVs even if they wanted to. Not to mention I feel I have to grab my wallet and check from side to side for "gangstas" every time I enter/exit the store - LOL!
Contrast this with my experience with the Costcos in Tucson: Huge landscaped parking lots in the suburban parts of town, lots of airy space and shiny-happy middle class people shopping inside, a reasonable selection of interesting LCDs and plasmas at freakin' internet prices
, no haggling with Best Buy/Circuit City extended-warranty-monster-cable peddlers trying to make you feel all guilty because you didn't let them rob you, no waiting for 15 minutes while some pot-smoking joker goes back to the storage room to manhandle your precious purchase up to the front door... at Costco you just grab what you want, pop it on a pallet yourself, and you're good to go! Costco's security rocks both inside and outside the store - it feels safe to shop there. And as for the shopping club fee: it ain't discouraging anybody around here... both Costcos I've seen are continually packed
with shoppers doing very brisk business.
Sure, Wal Mart probably has the money to bury everybody - but do they have smarts to actually do what it takes? I've noticed that once a company has hit on a formula that worked and made it rich in the past, it is very reluctant to change, at least until threatened with bankruptcy. As for Sam's Club, it's a step in the right direction, but the one here feels like "Costco Lite"... just not quite as big and satisfying. Wal Mart got big by killing dinosaurs like K-Mart, etc... someday somebody like Costco is going to kill them.
