LG Considers Combo Blu-ray/HD DVD Player, drops BD199 - Page 3

Samsung said they'd look at a combo player, and have since retracted that position. LG have said they would launch BR and HD-DVD players and have since dropped that stance and indicated they're considering a combo player. Interesting. Though we'll have to wait for details to become available before these can be viewed as more than just speculative future plans.

Agreed - the most that can be drawn right now is an indication of direction

I agree with Johnu - it's obvious BOTH formats won't fail, and I think most sensible people will think dual format players are a good thing. It will also accelerate the end of the format war.

Why is the BD camp so upset by this development? hmmmm...
Upset....lol, makes no difference to me as long as its a known quality brand player which LG is not imo.
Give me Panasonic, Denon, Pioneer Elite,Sony ES, Onkyo,Marantz ect....and not Toshiba or LG.

Don't forget that Thomson was supposedly going to be releasing a rebadge of the HDA1, because nothing says quality like RCA! Then again, we haven't heard anything about this since CES, so maybe they've given up, too.

And not Philips or non-ES Sony either. Too bad Denon, Marantz, and Onkyo seem to be sitting on the sidelines (unless I missed an announcement from them).

LG to Deliver Dual-format HD DVD/Blu-ray

Quote:
Korea's LG Electronics said on Tuesday it planned to launch a next-generation DVD player that will bridge the yawning gap between two competing formats by playing both HD DVD and Blu-ray.

"LG is a supporter of Blu-ray and is now considering a dual format player for later this year," said John Taylor, a U.S. spokesman for the Korean company.

[...]

This leaves open the possibility that, by the 2006 holiday season, consumers in most major markets will be able to choose from among three distinct kinds of high-definition video players: lower cost HD-DVD units, higher cost BD players, and "universal" players, possibly the most expensive of all.

[...]

Richard Doherty, analyst with Envisioneering, said LG planned the launch for fall.
