ESPN Finally Hooks Time Warner Cable for Longhorn Network
Lone Star State Carriage Deal Kicks Off in Time for Texas' Football Opener on Aug. 31
By: Mike Reynolds Aug 30 2013 - 20:08pm

On the day before the University of Texas kicks off its 2013 football season, ESPN has scored an affiliate deal with Time Warner Cable for the Longhorn Network.

Announced Friday evening, the deal, financial terms of which were not disclosed, will put the service dedicated to the school's athletics and academic fare on Time Warner Cable’s expanded basic service throughout the state of Texas in time for the 2013 season opener against New Mexico State at 7 p.m. (CT).

The network is now available on channel 444 in standard-definition and 1593 in the high-definition format in the greater Austin area.

Grande Communications, which is the video and broadband provider for the school in Austin, has been offering Longhorn Network since early September in 2011, just about a week after ESPN launched the service on Aug. 26, 2011 under a 20-year, $300 million deal with the school and rights-holder IMG College.

While the TWC pact secures a hometown advantage for Longhorn Network in Austin and throughout the Lone Star State, the channel still does not have deals with Comcast, DirecTV and Dish.

Longhorn Network’s distribution roster also includes Charter Communications, Cox Communications, Verizon FiOS TV, Google Fiber, Consolidated Communications, En-Touch Systems, E-Tex Communications, Bay City Cablevision, Mid-Coast Cablevision, Texas Mid-Gulf Cablevision and AT&T U-verse.

Yesterday, AT&T and ESPN inked a deal that gives U-verse TV subs access to the Longhorn Network’s authenticated TV Everywhere service on Apple iOS devices and on PC browsers at www.longhornNetwork.com.

Other exclusive Longhorn Network programming includes Texas’ football contests against Ole Miss on Sept. 14 and Kansas on Nov. 2, plus exclusive pre- and post-contest coverage on Texas GameDay and Texas GameDay Final. Viewers also can watch live presentations of men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, rowing, track and field and golf on the service.

"We're really excited to have reached an agreement that brings Longhorn Network's programming to Time Warner Cable," said Andrew Rosenberg, senior vice president of content acquisition for Time Warner Cable, in announcing the deal. "We know we count a lot of UT fans among our customers, and we've worked hard with our colleagues at ESPN to finalize an agreement in time to bring them tomorrow's game."

Noted David Preschlack, executive vice president, Disney and ESPN Media Networks: “We are extremely pleased to have reached an agreement with Time Warner Cable in time for college football. This deal will better serve UT fans in the greater Austin area and Texas statewide.”

That's what I did, and I got the same page (including the MAC address). I got my modem last year, when they first announced that they were going to charge extra for the old, out-dated modem they'd given me years before. Apparently, they weren't up to speed on how the installation process was supposed to go. And apparently, they've finally got a clue on how to do it. It's about time.

I need to check CBS.com for streaming and see if they are still discriminating against TWC Internet only subs. Either way, prepare for your bills to go up for CBS's freely available content. I can't believe any of the carriers ever agreed to pay them. Just the sheer volume of eyes they bring is compensation enough. Maybe these networks will just go to a cable only model and return their spectrum to the public interest. Then they can try to demand cable only rates. These carriage fights have come to a head now with bills at around $80 a month for basic here.

$80 for basic? I assume you are referring to "Standard Cable Programming" or "Digital TV" and not the "Broadcast Basic", which TWC calls "Basic" on my system, which consists of OTA + publis access + CSPAN + some cable networks (FX, TNT, CNN, ESPN, WGN-A, and Discovery on my system), which runs at $20 / mo.

Cheers!

Yea, in our division they really only push a single tier. If you know about the "lite" 2-13 package, you can get it.

In my area "lite" is 2-22. If someone is only getting 2-13, their TV is set to antenna. Cable 2-13 are the same frequencies as OTA

I haven't looked into the base package in a long time. It's basically an unadvertised one and used to consist of only locals plus some shopping here. At last check, even with just an Internet subscription people are still getting locals via ClearQAM. It's no matter at this point to me. I honestly don't miss it. The wife wants certain things and I'm pretty sure I can get them online.

TWC Hudson Valley describes it in their quarterly issue of Channel Lineups. They even describe it in some of their bundles... typically with their higher speed levels of internet service. Here is what it includes on my system. It's more than just OTA. Costs $20. You need a DTA / STB to get everything.

So much for great Signature service. Called today to find out why I'm getting a bill for Sept-Oct service when I cancelled everything on 8/24 and returned the equipment same day.
After waiting on hold for several minuted, idiot tells me not to worry, don't pay it and the credits I'm due will show up on the next statement. Went into the Chat online and the person I dealt with there told me the service was still active. She cancelled it retroactive to the date their equipment was returned.

Time Warner Cable and Univision Communications Announce Comprehensive Multi-Year, Multi-Platform Distribution Agreement
October 10, 2013

Early Renewal of Agreement Includes Distribution of Univision Deportes Network, Univision tlNovelas and FOROtv as well as El Rey Network from Filmmaker Robert RodriguezOctober 09, 2013 05:45 PM Eastern Daylight Time
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Time Warner Cable and Univision Communications Inc., the leading media company serving Hispanic America, today announced a multi-year, multi-platform agreement to deliver even more Univision content to Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks subscribers.

The agreement, which comes well in advance of the expiration of the parties' existing agreement, will bring a comprehensive selection of Hispanic networks and content to Time Warner Cable customers, including Univision's new networks: Univision Deportes, Univision tlNovelas and FOROtv. Time Warner Cable will also be among the first distributors to carry the El Rey Network. Created and programmed by renowned filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and FactoryMade Ventures, El Rey is a new English-language entertainment cable network geared towards young-adult audiences launching at the end of 2013. This multiplatform deal will provide Time Warner Cable's customers access to a robust offering of content for digital platforms and VOD, which includes additional "TV Everywhere" content for TWC TV's out-of-home platforms and authenticated access to Univision's UVideos and Univision Deportes digital properties.

The expanded partnership also includes renewed distribution rights for Univision's flagship broadcast and cable networks – Univision Network, UniMás, Galavisión, De Película, De Película Clásico, Bandamax, Ritmoson, Telehit and Distrito Comedia. In addition, Time Warner Cable and Univision's Television Group have reached a first-of-its-kind local news partnership to better serve Hispanic audiences in Los Angeles, New York and other shared markets.

"We were delighted to be able to work out our early renewal and expand our business relationship with Univision," said Melinda Witmer, Executive Vice President, Chief Video and Content Officer for Time Warner Cable. "Our comprehensive agreement expands the number of ways our Hispanic subscribers can enjoy their favorite entertainment, news, sports and telenovelas. We also look forward to the launch of El Rey; after talking with Robert and his creative team for more than a year, we're convinced that this new network will provide our customers with a unique experience."

"This agreement further demonstrates Time Warner Cable's strong commitment to providing Hispanic audiences with the content they love most," said Tonia O'Connor, President, Content Distribution and Corporate Business Development, Univision Communications Inc. "Hispanics represent a significant growth opportunity for distributors and our goal in this highly competitive environment is to build long-term partnerships, that tap into the power of our brand, deliver top quality programming and leverage our exhaustive range of multi-platform offerings."

"Time Warner Cable's commitment to El Rey emboldens our ability to bring exciting, visceral and cinematic stories to young viewers across the U.S. We are thrilled to be riding with TWC in our mission to deliver entertainment that captures the inclusive spirit of our audiences," said Robert Rodriguez, Chairman, El Rey Network.

Univision Deportes Network and Univision tlNovelas will be available this week on Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks in most Univision markets, and El Rey will be available soon after its launch at the end of 2013. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

I'm in the Albany market and we just got the new genre-themed lineups yesterday. TWC claims SD and HD should be on the same channel now, automatically choosing the HD version for HD devices. Since the lineup changed yesterday morning, I have been unable to access any HD channels on my TiVo Premiere with cablecard. I did a live chat with TWC yesterday and she tried to do something to the cablecard but that didn't solve it. Anyone in one of the markets that already has the auto-tune HD feature know what I have to do to get the HD versions? Do I need a tuning adapter? I haven't needed one to date since I only have the broadcast basic package and the local affiliates aren't SDV so I didn't need a TA for them, but I'm picking one up tomorrow to see if that fixes it. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

The auto HD feature is built into the twc DVR. Does theTivio have the same function since it uses it's own guide? Maybe TiVo hasn't updated it's guide yet.

I went through a fiasco trying to get the HD channels with a Ceton 6 tuner ETH device. Time Warner couldn't make it see anything other than SD and claimed in order to do so, I would need their equipment. I had a Tuning Adapter and we have the new channel line up. My ClearQAM channels appear to be gone to. I got fed up with their incompetence and just cancelled again. Done with reps who don't know the product, being outright lied to, and just the general crap.

looks like TWC messed up big time with Cable Card devices looks you guys got the SD map on the boxes instead of the HD map.

I've found the best way to deal with any channel issue is to completely ignore every general tech support line, phone the dedicated CableCARD support directly and don't even attempt to describe the details of the problem. Just say "Some channels are not coming through, can you re-pair the card?" then they'll do a general reset without the hassle of troubleshooting and Q&A just to arrive at the same solution.

Congratulations on your escape. I wish I had a good alternative provider.

I picked up the tuning adapter on Saturday and finally was able to hook it up yesterday (after realizing too late on Saturday that they didn't give me the USB cable with the TA - though she did give me a wireless USB adapter, which I still don't understand) and that solved my issue. With the TA connected to the TiVo, it automatically tunes in the HD feed for whichever of the two channel numbers I go to. After the searching I did on the topic, I was afraid I'd need to get one of their boxes. I probably would've cancelled instead of paying for their box.

Anyone been noticing really bad compression artifacts in dark scenes on FX?

I am thinking FX may be MPEG4 only now, and that TWC is re-compressing to a low bit rate MPEG2...

I was surprised when I got a letter from TWC saying my 1 year special price was ending, but they were extending it a year at +$12. TV & 16 mbps went from $82 to $94, all taxes included.

Don't know if they are competing with UVerse or Google Fiber.

This is generally how they handle price increases for long-time customers. Each time the price is set to increase significantly due to a promotion ending, they essentially split the difference. They do this repeatedly, effectively "boiling alive" the customer. Next thing you know, your bill has increased from $75 to $135. Only nowadays, when you call in to make a new deal, they won't give you any decent pricing. This is why TWC is down 300,000+ subscribers for the summer quarter. Their CEO is bullheadedly continuing with this strategy too. It's insanity, considering they face fiber competition in 40% of their footprint.
"only about 30% (last I checked) of the company's footprint sees competition from AT&T U-Verse, Verizon FiOS, or Google Fiber."
