New 2006 Sony SXRDs - Speculation & Discussion

Thread Starter
With Sony's line show on March 16 in Las Vegas quickly approaching, it's almost time to finally hear the official details about their 2006 SXRDs. I've not seen another comprehensive thread that focuses specifically on the 2006 models, so here we can consolidate the speculation and wishlists up until that point and then the reactions and discussion once the official announcements have been made.

So, in the meantime, what does everybody expect to happen? What improvements do you think we'll see in the new models? What will be the MSRPs? When will they begin shipping? Will they lose the "dumbo ears" speakers? Will they offer a model that utilizes LED technology, like some of the new DLPs?

Hopefully for anyone who is waiting to purchase a new SXRD - or anyone who is currently on the fence between a SXRD and other set - the next couple of weeks should yield a lot of information and make those decisions easier (or perhaps more difficult).

I'm hoping to hear that they accept 1080P via HDMI and there will be a 70" model.
Hopefully there will be:

1. 55"
2. reduced SSE
3. less depth
4. LED
5. No silver, or at least more A20ish

What will happen:

1. 55" with ears
2. Same screen, or a glare screen
3. (- 4) inches
4. bulb
5. Same cabinet

A lot of speculation about the 2006 SXRD's was in the "Sony SXRD Rumors" thread @ http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=632350

LED would certainly be nice. Replacing bulbs is really the only downside I can think of for the SXRD, other than the decidedly subjective footprint form factor of rear projection.

That makes two of us.

Will that give you better blacks?

What's that got to do with anything?

Have fun waiting for SED...it just got delayed another year, FYI.

At least that's one more option off the table for me... not that SED would have been an option anyway, if it had been initially priced out of my league.

I'm stuck square on the fence between a Samsung HLS-series DLP and a 2006-model Sony SXRD. I have to say that currently I'm leaning towards the DLP due to style (I love the new all-black models), form factor (no ears!), and especially price. If TVA does a PowerBuy, the price delta between a new DLP and a SXRD will be even more extreme. Even though I think the SXRDs are better sets overall (assuming you don't get a lemon... or maybe a lime, thanks to the green blob), I'm really not sure that's worth an extra $1000 - $1500+.

Anybody else in the same boat?

LED and hopefully with the new chips that would improve the PQ. A bit sharper...like that of a DLP but with the color saturation of an SXRD LCos.....oh and all the sizes for my choosing 55, 60, 70 etc..

Is that too much to ask? after all, we're about to shell out a few grand of our hard earned money

This was on the SXRD owner's thread:

QUOTE=boze44]

Following info just passed to me from good friend who is a long time Sony dealer:

55" is scheduled for a July release (for now).

Full HD High Picture Quality
  • 3 SXRD Full HD resolution (1920x1080/0.61†SXRD panel)
  • Superior contrast by “Cinema Black Proâ€
  • DRC MF-V1

High Sound Quality
  • SRS TruSurround XT
  • BBE Digital

Advanced Connectivity
  • HDMI x 2 inputs for digital connectivity (1080p reception)
  • Front component for HDV Camcorder
  • PC Input (D-Sub 15pin)

Additional Features
  • Compact Frame Design

Apparently, by qualifying the HDMI imputs with "1080p reception" it appears they will receive 1080p signals.

Also, according to the picture on the sheet he sent the Dumbo ears are gone (indicates this is so for all new 50/55/60" models)!!
The "brand new compact design" is not just for less deep but also width savings due to losing those silly speakers.

Hope this helps; I simply can't wait to get one as I have oggled over the 50" & 60" models in my local Tweeter store more than once![/quote]

Can you please post the "picture on the sheet" or the "sheet" itself?

That quote was second-hand information. A member posted what a Sony dealer friend had told him. The "sheet" and pictures weren't posted.

This is the kind of stuff that I really hope we see come out of Vegas next Thursday.

Oops; you're right. Thanks for the clarification :) I agree, I hope that we learn more about these possible products next Thursday. Based on the way Sony has been releasing information lately, I would bet the farm that we won't learn a darn thing about these new sets. I REALLY hope they wised up and lost the ears on all of the 2006 SXRD's; if they didn't, I won't be buying one (JVC, here I come...).

I'm pretty sure that the green blob has been taken care of in the more recent builds of the SXRD's.

Especially since it was never in most of the old builds. ;)

How is it different from the DRC MF-V2 on the 2005 SXRD?

Eliminating the color panels would be the biggest improvement imo. Possibly no more discolored corners, purple, blue blacks.

V1 would be a step backwards, identical to the DRC processing I have on my 2003 directview CRT HDTV. I cannot believe this is true.

As far as I have been able to ascertain, there are two flavors of DRC MF-V2, an 8 bit version and a 10 bit version. The Sony Rupy FP has the 10 bit version, and I believe that the XBRs have the 8 bit version, although I never did get conclusive proof of this.

I was hoping that the new SXRD XBRs would have the 10 bit flavor of V2.

Either way, that V1 has to be a mistake.

Auditor55, do you ever post anything constructive? Geez.

How about a go get you some cheese to go along with that whine?

Agree 100%. I'm confident that we won't be hearing about this in 2006.
