Toshiba needs PS3 to Succeed?

So, this seems like an oxymoron, but doesn't Toshiba need to see the PS3 do well? Or can they rely on IBM to sell the cell? I'd think if the PS3 is a big success, Toshiba would be able to use the marketing behind the Cell processor in their own electronics...

How funny would it be to see HD DVD players powered by Cell processors? Seems like a contradiction. It's a shame that Sony and Toshiba could work together to come up with the Cell, but couldn't come to the table to produce a single format optical standard for HD.

Toshiba is (was?) planning on putting the Cell into stuff like TVs. Industry makes for strange bedfellows. Samsung's in direct competition with Sony in the flat-panel market and Pioneer was on the other side for DVD+/-R. Sony and Philips are awfully cuddly though. They were opposite Toshiba and Warner over DVD, which means there's bad blood between those two camps already. I think one reason Toshiba doesn't have a lot of manufacturing partners is that they screwed a bunch of people over with the initial DVD royalties.
