1080P Panel Wars Ep. III: Westinghouse LVM-37w3 37" LCD - Page 259

I was wondering if any Westy owners here have the Gefen HT Scaler hooked up and it if is better at 1080i De-Interlacing than the Westy's internal Genesis De-Interlacer?

Is there going to be a successor to the w3? Just wondering as this thread goes WAY Back....

Can anyone offer a comparison of this set with the Panasonic 60PXU or the Vizio VX37L? They're all essentially the same price and size. I would be using for videogames (PS2/PS3, Wii), movies and a mix of HD/SD television from Cox in Orange County, CA.

Thanks in advance.

Nothing announced yet. Well just have to wait and see.

I was thinking that this would be a good set. However, I have seen threads of 'bad' westy's. Is this one of the models affected? There are so many models though that I get confused with which one has what feature or is rated as 'poor'

I have mine for over a year and I think it is a great set. I have only 2 minor complaints: pretty bad ghosting on some HD broadcast movies and since it is only visible on some movies I suspect those movies are messed up somehow to the point the monitor doesn't know how to handle deinterlacing and I had maybe 4-5 lock ups in a year, where it stops responding and the power has to be disconnected at the outlet, which is not even worth mentioning, it is such minor nuisance. On the other hand I have no dead/stuck pixels, backlight is uniform, there are no "clouds" or banding of any sort and good HD source looks awesome. YMMV but if I had to do it all over, I would probably pick it up again even with unlimited budget. I used following HD sources without any problems: Cable box SA8300HD, Sony HDV camcorder, DVHS, computer and Xbox360, last 2 being 1080p and I think latest Sony update fixes PS3 problems as well.

I have this display and I'm loving it for the most part. My only issue is that I can't get it to look good at 1080P on the xbox 360.

I don't have the elite, but am running via VGA cables. It just looks blurry, in games and in the game menus. I have to adjust the Sharpness when running at lower resolutions but the display does not let you adjust sharpness when running 1080P (obviously).

I don't really want to buy an Elite just to see if HDMI looks better.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas as to how I can make it look better?

Also, could adjusting Phase help? I'm not exactly sure what that does.

FWIW, I think I've read that the XBOX 360 doesn't look nearly as good connected via VGA as it does connected via component or HDMI on a variety of t.v. sets.

Worth trying the component cables to see, probably -- IIRC, they come with the box.

Change the cable, I had the same problem and only after reading this forum I decided to exchange the cable for better, more expensive one and everything looks good now. Apparently 1080p is not very common yet and cables that work good with lower resolution, not always can handle higher frequency rate of 1080p. VGA is analog and good cable makes the difference here.
Also, and this is VERY IMPORTANT with Westy and Xbox360: Turn Xbox360 first, wait 15-20 seconds and only then turn on your TV, otherwise Westy will calibrate on the white screen that Xbox is sending during bootup and everything will be out of whack, crashed whites, crashed blacks and no calibration will fix it. Another way would be to switch the input to something else and go back to VGA, if both are running already. Of course you need to calibrate the set then but if you always turn your monitor when dashboard is displayed you'll have very consistent PQ all the time and everything will look very good. VGA is a little bit less sharp than component but you need to look for it to see but otherwise it looks very good if you follow my advice. Come to think of it, see if you can make it work with delayed power on first before you run to get new cable, maybe that's all there is wrong.

I was suprised to find they tacked on a TAX of $66 to Texas. The shipping of $36, which i didn t' mind, bumped up the final price by a hundred bucks. I removed it. What about this TAX business? I have never paid tax on mail-order items - what gives? Where is their mail-order business located? They have no email address to recieve email questions, so, I'll have to wait until in the morning to call and find out about the taxes. Sam's has the online also (for more money, of course), but they don't say anything about a Sales Tax.

I think the rule with tax online is that you have to pay tax if the place your buying from has a store presence in your state.

I ordered yesterday from Costco and I just received a mail that it has been shipped. Too bad that it doesn't have a built-in tuner. Any recommendation for a standalone ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuner? Thanks.

I'm in the same boat. There are several positive reviews for Samsung's tuner, model DTB-H260F, which I"ll probably pick up. Circuit City stocks these if you like to shop locally.

Here's a text link to Samsung's website:

I'm very curious to know if anyone has had a good experience with 360 at 1080p. I plan to hook up:
PS3 on HDMI
360 on VGA
Digital Cable on component

so far it sound like some negative coments on VGA of XBox360. I have monster cables for the xbox so if the issue is cables, I should be alright... Thoughts?

So for the people who bought the TV, anybody know a cheap and good mount? It would be nice if it was articulating. thinking of getting one from costco unless there are better prices?

Thanks

I have a PS3 hooked up via HDMI, and the 360 (with HD-DVD add-on) hooked
up via VGA (Monster's 360 VGA cable).

Movies on both look stunning.
Both Microsoft and Sony released firmware updates to fix picture quality issues recently, so make sure you upgrade both.

Pete is 100% correct. I had a non-microsoft VGA cable and it looked horrible and blurry compared to component but that all changed when I returned the cheap cable and got the official Microsoft VGA. It was like night and day.

1080p vs. 720p. That's enough for me.

For you 360/westy owners, is the problem where the tv adjusts the contrast and settings when you turn on the 360 for VGA only, or is it going to mess it up no matter what connection your using. It would seem annoying to me if I have to not look at the intro screen every time I turn on the 360.

PS: This tv is now 900$ at Newegg.

correct, i was told by westinghouse that there was a short run of the 1.8fw and the final firmware was named 1.0

yes, it's vga only, it adjusts the gamma settings based on the input, and when you first turn the xbox on, the plain white kinda screws with it. just enable auto sign in on your xbox, and wait for it to boot before you switch inputs.

------------------------------------------------
i know a few people asked about settings for the spring update VGA expanded setting, here's what i have from AVIA

360 @ VGA Expanded:
Brightness - 46
Contrast - 47
Saturation - 50
Hue - 2
Color Temp - Neutral
Sharpness - 0 (no control for sharpness w/ VGA)
Backlight - 0

just bought one! after almost 6 months of going back and fourth like crazy... got it from Costco, with shipping and tax it came to $907.93 (im in GA). Now only to get the thing so I can convince myself that it was worth the drain in the bank account...

Im going to use it mainly for a PC display and have it hooked up to my xbox 360. Cant wait
