According to my sources the FIOS network is being built in Manhattan in a few locations, with more offices expected to be seeded next year. In fact it is presently available for buildings fed from their E56th St Central office. It is very slow going because, unlike in the suburbs, this has to be done building by building in an urban area like Manhattan, and negotiations to gain the right of entry from building owners can be very tedious. If you live in NYC (especially around E56th St) and want to get FIOS it is absolutely critical that you let your landlord, condo-board, etc. know that you want this technology allowed into your building.

and FSNY, and MSG (SD&HD). Local NHL action starts tonight and I'm going to have to switch over to Cablevision to watch the games (during breaks in the Mets game, of course).

Just got word from a CSR that Versus (OLN) will be available on FiOS-TV 10/31, No word about HD.

The date was alittle off. They added Versus this weekend - channel 306.

Any word on YES HD for next season Ken?

Nothing. I can't even get a good idea on MSG & FSNY SD! They just keep saying they're in negotiations. I hope you're continuing to bug them, too. We need to stay on them to prove demand.

Ken I call them every week on that. I really don't understand the rationale of carrying the SD version and not the HD side. It must be 2 different contracts, but it's hard to believe it would be negotiated that way.

Yes, whether it's cable, satellite or FiOS, SD and HD carriage of channels are usually two separate contracts.

I attended the digital life convention yesterday and spoke with verizon, and they confirmed suspicions that manhattan could see Fios late 07 in to 08.

He also mentioned that apartment buildings will not exactly get the fiber to the premises. The fiber optic line will end at the beginning of the building and then change to coaxial cable.

So it's basically the same as what TWC has in the city now.

This is the typical misinformtion that you get from talking to people at things like this.

A) FIOS is already available in certain portions of NYC
B) FIOS will be available in additional portions of NYC in 07 and will continue to expand year over year
c) One possible configuration of MDU deployment is to demarc the fiber in a telco closet on the floor or basement.......however, the preferred deployment is to bring the fiber directly into the living unit. It all depends on the property owner and the layout of the building. Most of the MDU deployments so far in NYC ( a high majority) have been fiber right into the Living unit.

I work for Verizon and the company seems to be non-stop with Fios. All overtime and money is being spent on Fios. Fios TV is also getting approval in many places at a fast rate. I believe it will be starting in Brooklyn soon as they are asking employees to shift around. I cant wait to get it in my area and it seems Brooklyn might be good to go in majority of the places towards the end of 2007. I hope.

Does anyone know whether Verizon has made their plans for FIOS known? I am interested in plans for Berkeley Heights (Union County) especially the 908-490-XXXX exchange, which seems to be a Plainfield substation. I have asked Verizon CS several times but the standard response seems to be "Don't call us, we will call you )

FYI, SNY-HD should be on the system within the next couple of days. Channel 815. Too bad we missed Mets season, but we're making progress!

Ken, any news about YES HD? I would think that can't be too far behind SNY-HD.

FYI, SNY-HD is finally live. Its been in the guide for over a week, but there was no signal. Instead, there was a "call to subscribe" message. They finally worked it out. Needless to say, the programming is light in the baseball off-season, but if you like thier programming, you'll like it more in HD.

Great to hear about the RSN deal. Hopefilly it includes the HD channels.

is verizon putting all their simulcast digital stations on 5C encryption, requiring an STB at every TV set, or can we use our cable ready tuners to tune non-encrypted channels?

also, do they support cable card?

i'm putting in FIOS internet tomorrow but will not convert my cable TV if they are forcing me to add STB's in every room to get digital version of SD channels.

There are analog channels you can get without a box. You can also get a cable card.
