A speaker's flat response dose not necessarily mean you will get a flat room response. In fact you probably won't. Like AustinJerry said, speaker placement and listening position relative to the room dimensions has a large effect on the response.

Yup, I certainly understand the importance of placement & positioning, but since those variables are highly constrained by furniture, wife preference, running kids, etc, I wanted to understand what the plugs had to offer.

So if placement & plugs aren't enough for my liking, my next investigation will be EQ.
What's a good standalone EQ or EQ + measurement device (Does Audyssey make one?)

Audyssey no longer makes a stand-alone EQ. The only way to get Audyssey is to purchase an AVR with the EQ capability. If you are interested, the Audyssey.com web site has a listing of AVR's that include this technology.

I can do the measuring with my Yamaha Aventage receiver (and then put it back where it belongs). And I just acquired a Yamaha ge-20 graphic EQ (yay craigslist!), which hopefully will allow me to compensate for any issues the measurements indicate.

But hauling the receiver out of its home is non-trivial, so I'll probably shoot in the dark (fiddle with the EQ using only my ears to measure) until my curiosity gets the better of me.

TrueRTA and just using the YPAO mike that came with my Yamaha receiver has been the easiest and quickest and cheapest way for me to measure my room using pink noise.

Surprisingly I found that I didn't like a flat response but instead preferred a house curve.

EQ can perhaps give you a +/- 5dB correction. Only speaker and listening position adjustments can correct those +/- 10dB and higher suckouts and peaks.

Just a heads up........ I just went to Radio Shack and found that they have the analog SPL meters on clearance for $14.97. I got the display model (none left in stock) discounted further for a whopping price of $ 10.00. At that price, I figured I could use a spare.

Ordered pair of T6 today. They beat out B&W 683s , focal 726, revel f12. All very close. I liked the psb/b&w dealer (audio advice Raleigh) . The 683 was a bit too reserved in the upper range and did not always mesh and image at low volume but controlled the bass better.

The T6 always imaged and involved though some vocals had more edge than I'd prefer and the bass could get bloomy on bass heavy stuff. My hope is that I can manage those imperfections and keep the advantages


Will hit the shack looking for the meter.

As an Image T5, B5 and C5 owner I know what you mean by some edge on vocals. I had to manage it by pulling down some of the higher frequencies with EQ. It did take some of the edge off.

Basically though it is caused by the cheaper crossovers and cabinets in the Image line.

I ended up replacing my front T5's with Imagine B's. A much smoother sounding speaker. (and a bit cheaper than T5's as well!) And with a couple of good subs bass is very good on my system now too. Comes down to the old argument of floorstanding speakers vs better quality monitors for the same money.

Am in the process of upgrading the surround and centre B5 and C5 now as well. The Imagine B isn't the perfect speaker for vocals either, but it is very dynamic with instruments. I have actually introduced some Dynaudio DM2/6 monitors in place of the B5's for the surrounds as the DM2/6 do very well on vocals and seem to complement the Imagine B's when listening to music in surroundsound.

Hi,

Can someone recommend Wall Mounts for PSB Image B4 speakers? I purchased OmniMount mounts, and they seem incompatible for the hole size in the middle of B4 (I refuse to make holes to make the bracket plate fit in the back).

I have the OmniMount 10.0 for the Image B4.
They are mounted to the ceiling, angling down.

My apologies. I am using the mounts for Imagine Mini's, which are 5 11/16 in wide. When I mounted the speakers, I didn't get the impression that the mount adjustment was close to its limit. Too bad, these are really excellent mounts.

Very interesting...how will these compare to the Synchrony Two's? I am on the fence to go this direction rather than Dynaudio X32..is the Synchrony's still supposed to be the 'line above' or are they similar..Love that they come in valnut..

Well... that is a very good question. I see Imagine T2 as a continuation of very good concept developped in Image T6 and Synchrony One, i.e. 3-way full range floor standing speaker with respectfull performance through out the range. Synchrony Two is 2 or 2.5 way, thus (in principle) may have a compromise in voice range. However, Synchrony is sitting above Imagine in the line up. I guess they will have similar price tag. The question about SQ does not seem to have a clear answer.

I have auditioned Synchrony Two towers twice and they didn't do much for me. On the first visit to the dealer, I preferred the sound of some Imagine B's over the Synchrony Two's and took them home instead.

I think the new Imagine T2 could make a fabulous sounding speaker and I will certainly check some out when they turn up in my neck of the woods. Even if they retail around the same money as some Synchrony models, I may prefer the sound of the T2's anyhow.

I have decided to upgrade to a set of PSB speakers. I want to get the Image B6's for the front and a C5 for the center. I was thinking of the S5's for the surrounds, but I would actually like to get in-walls if possible for the surrounds and possibly the rears and do a 7.1 setup. Will any of the in-wall speakers match the tone of the B6 and C5? I was looking at the CW50R or CW60R, but was told by a forum member that they would not match. I have a question into PSB but have not heard back yet.

Any thoughts, options, or advice?

I asked PSB about the in-walls and got this response.

"The CW50, CW60, CW80 and CW160R/S all match well to the Image line. The CW160R/S would be the best one. Being that you pointed out the S5, have you seen the CW260 Model?"

Hello,
I was wondering if someone might know the following. I have a chance to pick up a pair of used PSB Stratus Silver i for pretty cheap. I am just putting together my first home theater setup and was planning on getting the Image B5s for the fronts with a Denon 1712. While I am still on a tight budget, I was wondering what the minimum Denon would be needed to drive these ok?? (They would replace the B5s). Oh, and its in a fair small room 18x20.

Have been trying to get some info on speakers... i currently have had CW160R in ceiling and thinking of putting same or CW180R in ceiling... price difference is huge.

Has anyone heard these models and can commenton sonic qualities?

I am having a hard time finding a local dealer that has either one on display to compare.

Hey gang, as the speaker search continues I am curious about the Image B5 and B6's.

I have a Pio Elite SC-35 and am wondering if the power from the AVR will be sufficient for these speakers. I see the speakers mentioned at 6ohm, so I am curious. I would like to avoid getting a pre/pro.

PSB Image B5 and B6 are relatively easy for amplifiers. I would say, even mid level receiver will be plenty sufficient for them.

I have the PSB Stratus Silveri-- for 10 yrs now. Still playing beautifully,
{C6i- CC} I have a Denon 3803{ a little long on the tooth}, with 5.1 set up.
Played this 5.1 MCA for some time. Then purchase a~$299 2ch amp for the fronts only -they are 4ohm speakers. The SQ was Greatly - improved.
Don't know the spec on the 1712- however, play with it and add a 2ch amp in addition to see how it sounds to you..

Based upon good advice from this board about 8 years ago, I purchased a 5.1 setup of PSB Image (T6, C5, S5 and 5i SW), and paired it with a NAD T762.

Great sound, I mean room filling, warm and very listenable sound in stupidly small rooms, and huge brick and timber loft rooms.

So I just finished my basement man cave, and need to spec it out. I'd stick with the current set up but for two issues:

1. I need HDMI through the amp, and the 762 just doesn't contemplate it
2. About 3 years ago, the NAD started acting possessed; turning off shortly after turn on, or turning itself on at random times, or switching input selections. I figured it was either a bad ground or heat related, but have been resigned to living with it until I found an amp or receiver that I wanted to replace it with with.

So long story short, I need to pick a replacement.

The NAD 757 or 777 should offer the same quality of sound that I am used to. I fear it will also offer the same lack of longevity, and both of them are limited in functions, features and abilities compared to other mfrs in the same price point.

An Onkyo TX-NR1009 or 3009 offers more feature, and gets rave reviews, even pushing low ohm speakers. I just dont know if the sound quality will suffer vs what I am used to.

Has anyone listened to both the Onkyo higher end models and NAD of the 7x6 or 7x7 generations? If so, care to offer your opinions of each?

Have you considered the Denon 4311? If reliability is your concern, then Denon has had a better track record. The 4311 has the latest technology, including Audyssey MultEQ XT32, 11.1 capability, and 9 internal amps. There are a number of postings on the 4311 thread from users who compared it to the latest Onkyo models.
