I just got back from Best Buy, and the Sony XBR 32 was side-by-side with the Sharp 32 -d40u. The black levels absolutely SUCKED on the Sharp compared with the Sony. It was shocking. The new Samsung 46 was there too, and looked QUITE good too; from what I saw, it was close to the PQ of the Sony 40.
Sharp will regret their decision to eliminate the 45d90u. They have ceded the high ground to Sony & Samsung. I think it is a colossal blunder. And don't tell me about the 57 & 65! Those are barely products - for the rich and famous. When the price is less than 4Gs, actual people will buy it.
You know, I was pissed when Mike53 announced the cancellation of the 45d90u; but now that I have seen what I have seen, my blood is boiling. More God-damn beancounters deciding what a technology company should do --- maximize profits for the next quarter. Who cares whether people respected the Aquos name that the engineers built up over all those years! The stockholders must be served.
Will Sharp be a distant memory in a few years? Will it be like Digital Equipment Corporation or UNIVAC? If it is, technology historians will point to this moment.
I didn't mind them coming out with a lower end product --- the d4u, d6u, and now the d40u series. It just shouldn't have been an Aquos!
But to give up the high end is suicidal...
